SLOVENSKA ŽUPNIJA SV. GREGORIJA VELIKEGA | ST. GREGORY THE GREAT SLOVENIAN CHURCH 42/58 Številka - Number / Leto - Year 16.10. 2022 29. NEDELJA MED LETOM 29TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME Fr. Drago Gačnik, SDB ŽUPNIK - PASTOR NASLOV - ADDRESS 125 Centennial Pkwy N. Hamilton, ON L8E 1H8 PHONE: 905-561-5971 CELL: 905-520-2014 E-MAIL gregory_sdb@ stgregoryhamilton.ca HALL RENTALS 905-561-5971, ext. Tukaj Luka, evangelist ubogih, izrazi ves svoj prezir do mogočnežev in osornih birokratov. (Prim. Oznanjevalec - C_2006/7, štev. 5) 402 | VESTNIK 2022 29TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME Response: Our help is from the Lord, who made heaven and earth. First Reading Exodus 17:8-13 Victory comes to Israel as long as Moses can keep his arms raised. Second Reading 2 Timothy 3:14-4:2 All scripture is inspired by God and can be used for teaching. Gospel Luke 18:1-8 Jesus teaches his disciples to pray continually and never lose heart. “Pray continually and never lose heart.” Illustration Are we losing the habit of memorising? Some of us can still remember being brought up on The Penny Catechism with its questions and answers about every aspect of Catholic faith. The decision to abandon this approach to learning was based on the belief that such rote repetition did not bring understanding. A similar decision was made in regard to learning one’s times tables and memorising poetry. Explanation and understanding replaced memory. Yet memory plays a vital role in establishing our identity, both personally and as a society. We can’t eliminate its role altogether. Our social shaping comes through our shared learning, whether nursery rhymes or the times tables or the prayers learnt at our mother’s knee. It is true that bad memories can haunt us, but psychotherapists work on bringing such into the light so that we can have a greater sense of confidence and control in our lives. Similarly, a neglect of learning poetry by heart how to pray, and Jesus, as in Matthew’s Gospel, gives them the prayer we now know as the Lord’s Prayer. It is a shorter version than the one we use but it contains the same coupling of praise and petition. It is the petition element that dominates his teaching on prayer in today’s Gospel. The petitioner is a widow, a figure used by Jesus elsewhere as an example of poverty and powerlessness. The judge is the symbol of power as well as justice. He is pictured as acting on the widow’s behalf, not because of the justice of her claim, but because he fears that, in the original Greek of the Gospel, she will give him a black eye if he fails to act. How much more likely that God will see justice done, even if at times God does seem slow to react. Application leaves us without access to the shared lived wisdom of the past. Nadezhda Mandelstam wife of the Russian poet Osip Mandelstam, who died under Stalin’s purge in the 1930s, waited till better times in the 1970s to reveal his poetry to the world. Because she could have been killed for having his poetry in her possession, she had committed it all to memory. Gospel Teaching St Luke’s Gospel constantly mentions Jesus being at prayer. It has even been called the Gospel of prayer. Jesus is found at prayer particularly when he is faced with a big decision or an important event. The consummate example is in the garden of Gethsemane. Luke links the prayer of Jesus on this occasion into what is his usual practice: Jesus went out, in accordance with his custom, to the Mount of Olives, and he encouraged his disciples twice to pray not to enter into temptation. Jesus usually prays by himself, but he encourages his disciples to follow his example. At one point in the Gospel they ask him to teach them Memory and prayer have certain aspects in common. They both open us up to what is beyond or greater than ourselves. People condemn memorisation because they fear it supports indoctrination. They condemn prayer because they feel it gives a false sense of expectation. Both criticisms can be true when the practices of memory and prayer are used abusively. But to eliminate their practice on such grounds limits our ability to be open to the world and to God. It is often said that the practice of prayer does not change God: it changes us. We become more able to understand and follow God’s will. And, just as with a well-trained memory, we are then able to draw things out of our treasury, both new and old. We struggle when we cannot make sense of our world. Prayer takes us beyond the capabilities of our mind and heart to find the source of all meaning, God. This allows us to return to our world with greater understanding but also with gratitude. Life is a gift, but to remain open to a full appreciation of the gift of each day and what it brings we need that inner openness, which both prayer and memory bring. They act as the invisible cord that links us to the divine mystery that lies behind not just our own salvation but that of our world. And as we respond to this vision we, too, never lose heart. Let’s go to Our Lord through the hands of the Blessed Virgin Mary for help and strength. We will beseech Mary to intercede before the throne of God for the protection, healing and radical transformation of our country. We look to Our October is the month of the rosary for Catholics. On October 13, was the 105th anniversary of the last of the apparitions of the Virgin Mary at Fatima. Our Lady’s big word of advice at that time was about the world getting itself into a miserable state for its rejection of Jesus Christ and that all Catholics should regularly pray the rosary. At Fatima, the Blessed Mother also stated that Russia was in serious need of conversion because it was in a position to ruin things for humanity. Does any of this seem appropriate for us in 2022? You bet! We have to start setting things right in the world before it’s too late! The rosary will really help curb Satan’s destruction of humanity. Please go grab your rosary beads. The rosary can help eradicate Putin’s genocide in the Ukraine. The rosary can help stop global dictators from purposely sabotaging nations... The rosary can get us back on track from a life of individualism, materialism and selfishness. The rosary can help our young people see the truth and beauty and goodness of Jesus. So… I invite all of you to commit to praying the rosary daily. The best thing we can do for peace and God’s grace is to pray it. Let it be said again: “The rosary is a powerful weapon!” Our prayers on the beads can bestow healing, forgiveness and the proMolitev rožnega venca pri Marijinem kipu, v soboto tection of Jesus and Mary from evil. Steve, is praying the rosary the best that you can come up with to help solve the tensions we face in the present environment? My answer – absolutely! In these unprecedented times we need to be prayer warriors.
