Tu imamo dvojno znamenje: znamenje čuječnosti in zaspanosti. Za- spanost je podoba duhovne otopelosti, brezbrižnosti in smrti. Čuječnost pa pomeni pričakovanje, predanost, dejavno in razumno ljubezen, mo- drost in življenje. »Torej ne spimo kakor drugi, ampak čujmo in bodimo trezni« (1 Tes 5,6). Odložimo torej dela teme in si nadenimo orodje svetlobe« (Rim 13,12). Svetloba svetilke, ki pre- 510 | VESTNIK 2020 Illustration The Boxing Day tsunami of 2004 was a devas- tating tragedy which took thousands of lives, with whole communities destroyed. Elephants, dogs and cats, even flamingos are said to have given signs of alarm and gone into hiding, or onto higher ground in order to save them- selves. First Reading Wisdom 6:12-16 The writer reflects on wisdom, personified as God’s agent in the world who shares inti- mately in God’s life and creative purpose. Second Reading 1 Thessalonians 4:13-18 God promises us life everlasting as we share in the resurrection of Jesus. We can- not be certain how this will be, but we can be sure that God’s promises are to be trust- ed. Gospel Matthew 25:1-13 The parable of the wise and foolish brides- maids is principally about having hearts, minds and spirits open and alert to detect the presence of Jesus in our lives. “Stay awake, because you do not know either the day or the hour.” trga noč, je srečanje z ženinom, s Kristusom. (Prim. Oznanjevalec 2005-2006, št 1) VESTNIK 2020 | 511 While humans don’t have more than five senses either, and those are often far more blunt than animal sens- es, the Bible teaches that we are made in the image and likeness of God, and thus have a built-in capacity for intuit- ing the things of faith and God’s pres- ence in our lives. This is what the first reading describes as wisdom. It is part of our spiritual DNA, as it were, but unlike the heightened sense of ani- mals, it isn’t just an automatic reaction on the part of humans when faced with the divine. It will stay dormant unless we are open to the possibility of there being a God who wants to be in a mu- tually loving relationship with us. There are people who go through life never apparently feeling a need for or interest in God. There are others who are brought up in a faith community and learn all about God, but as a dis- tant notion, without much relevance to their daily lives. There are also those who have an active faith, but see it as confined to matters they consider reli- gious. Human life, from this perspective, is divided into the sacred and the secular spheres. God inhab- its the holy sphere and it is there that we must look for and pay attention to God. The rest is just “the world”, and not worth bothering about. Gospel Teaching But in joining the human race as one like us in all things but sin, Jesus inhabited every aspect of human life. There is no part of our experience, good or bad, where Jesus is absent. So the main message of the parable of the foolish and wise bridesmaids is not just about being alert to the coming of Christ on judgement day, or even on the day of our own death. It’s about having the senses of our soul fine- ly tuned in order to detect God’s presence in all aspects of our human living. In that sense any and every moment is the one in which the bridegroom announces his arrival to those awake and alert enough to notice and recognise him. This also means that God’s presence around us requires a response on our part. Matthew’s Gospel tells us that when Christ demands an account of our lives on judgement day, we will not be asked about our liturgical correctness or our enthusiasm for religious observance. We will be asked if we fed those who were hungry, clothed those who were naked, were compassionate with those sick and in prison and welcomed the stranger. Our capacity to “touch the suffering flesh of Christ in others”, as Pope Francis has said, is the proof of our wisdom. Application Christ is present to us in the sacraments, which are signs that make real what they signify. They do so by enabling us to embody in the way we live what they carry within them. We receive sacraments of healing and restoring, sacraments of loving union, of a call to relationship with God and transformative service of our world. These sacramental signs bear fruit through our own compassion, our willingness, as Pope Francis has said, to be “revolutionaries of tenderness”. This is the oil that keeps the lamp of faith alight in the world. There is a need for prayer, for mature thinking and for worship in our lives. These are the signs of living faith. There is also a need for compassion. We cannot rely on others to do our loving for us. God’s grace gives each of us the capacity to grow and live in love. The more we exercise our capacity for detect- ing and responding to Christ’s daily invitations, the more alert we will be to the “still, small voice” that calls us. God’s amazing grace makes it possible for us not only to have our lamps ready, but ourselves to become the light of the world. That’s certainly worth staying awake for. 512 | VESTNIK 2020 I know that everyone by now has received a number of mailings from the diocese re- garding the OHOS fundraising campaign for our parish. I would first like to apologize for the diocese as they sent out their campaign information letters and booklet to you before our parish was able to send you our personal letter of information. I suppose being a dio- cese wide campaign, it was challenging for them to change their mail out dates as per our request. None the less, each member of our parish has a letter in the back foyer of our church which should be a little clearer on how this OHOS campaign actually works and the options you have to help out in any way that you can. To help keep costs down, please take your letters, if you have a family member or close friend that you can deliver the letter to, please take their envelope and forward it to them to save on postage costs. Anything not taken today, will be mailed out to each recipient directly. I would like to share with you the process that took place that got us to where we are today with the OHOS campaign by the dio- cese. We were approached by the diocese at the end of February 2019 to participate in this fundraising initiative which was put forth to help parishes in need. We were asked to be part of the 1st of 3 waves which would kick off towards the end of 2019. While this campaign was mandatory for all parishes, your parish council decided not to take part in the 1st wave as we were uneasy participating in this mandate. We did not agree with the diocesan process and format, therefore we took more time to discuss, review and figure out how to proceed. I personally called the diocesan chancellor to discuss our concerns and get some clarity on this invoked campaign. Two things were made very clear to me through- out my long discussion: The intentions of the diocese were meant to help the parishes under their umbrella. Their sincerity was to help parishes in need to find a way for them to thrive and survive Participation in this campaign would be a sign that each parish was willing to put in the effort required to survive. There could come a time when the diocese would re-evaluate the parishes within their boundaries and decide that there needed to be some re-organization and perhaps elimination of parishes – parishes which didn’t participate, would be looked at V nedeljo, 1. novembra, je ob koncu maše predsednica Župnijskega pastoralnega sveta, Heidy Novak, malo obrazložila »Eno Srce, Ena Duša« kampanjo. VESTNIK 2020 | 513 as one not willing to do the work required to thrive and build their community spiritually, thus put up for consideration to be closed. Although we are a Slovenian Parish and very self-sufficient, we still fall within the reach of the diocese and their decisions. For these reasons, your parish council re- evaluated the OHOS campaign. Also, because COVID-19 closed our doors for an unknown period of time and limiting our fundraising opportunities we have not had the opportuni- ty to raise any funds at our social events, our banquets, luncheons, pustovanje, martinova- nje, New Years etc… Because of this and see- ing that our expenses still needed to be paid, we decided that perhaps we should give this fundraising campaign a second look. Howev- er, we know our people, we know our style and we know the tolerance level of our parish- ioners. Your parish council felt that the dioce- san format was very “North American” We wanted to do this the Slovenian way trusting and believing that our community members and friends would do whatever they could to help out. For this reason, we made a plea to the diocese asking for a variance in the fund- raising formats. We were denied a number of times, then finally, although the diocese felt that their process needed to be followed since other parishes were not given any lee- way, because we persisted, stood our ground and submitted our proposal, we were given the green light to add to the existing cam- paign as we thought would be best to be suc- cessful. However, we were mandated to still incorporate the campaign process as an op- tion for those who preferred it. While pledging dollars over a 3 year period may seem uncomfortable to some – Fr. Drago and I discussed at length what we should do and after doing a little digging we actually found this same similar format was used right here at our parish in 1962. Some of you may remember that on November 17th of 1962, there was a push to raise funds for building expenses. Our parishioners made pledges of support over a 3 year term. Although auto- matic payments were not how those pledges were fulfilled, commitments were made and cash/cheques were provided to the parish to help with our building costs. Still now in 2020, many of us are not comfortable with having money taken directly out of our bank ac- counts or credit cards – this is where the par- ish council brain stormed to come up with alternate donation methods. We partnered with Moya and created a “piggy bank” format of saving to fundraise while simultaneously providing families with a way to teach youngsters how to save and share. While we are not a community that be- lieves in determining what amount of money anyone or any family should be contributing, the diocese felt strongly about asking for spe- cific amounts to donate. We at our parish be- lieve that each parishioner needs to deter- mine what they feel comfortable donating. Only you can decide how you can help out and how much you can contribute without adding stress to your lives particularly during these challenging times. Your parish is not asking for you to donate a specific amount, but rather to help if you can. It is important for everyone to know that the diocese has some formula that they used (average of your donations over 3 years, your age etc…) and determined what they would ask for you to donate to this campaign. We were not com- fortable with this fundraising style. It is also 514 | VESTNIK 2020 important for everyone to know that nobody from your parish council, not even Fr. Drago was involved in the process of determining the amount the diocese suggested and to this day we have no idea of the amount each fami- ly was asked to consider pledging over 3 years – we on parish council still believe that the dollars donated are not our business, but ra- ther something for each one of us individually to decide on, each family needs to decide what works best for them and their individual situations, we do not believe that helping your church should not cause you stress. Hence, your parish, St. Gregory the Great does not ask you for any specific contribution, we only ask that you consider this campaign; and, if you are able to help out over the next 3 years towards this fundraising effort, that you do what works best for you. Our Parish Goal was determined by the diocese as our income for the year 2017. Therefore, our fundraising goal over 3 years is set at $200,000. If each family saves just a loonie or toonie a day as a minimum over 3 years, we can reach this cam- paign goal easily, and then the diocese will show their support to us by adding 10% $20,000 to our raised amount bringing our total to $220,000. Because the diocese has identified us as a ‘Parish in Need” All of these funds would come directly to our parish and none of it goes or stays with the diocese or the OHOS Campaign. As explained in our parish letter to you – Pledges can be made directly through the OHOS diocesan website under the St. Gregory the Great Slovenian Church tab. We have also partnered up with Moya Financial – if you go to our community page on the Moya website, you can make donations to our parish for this One Heart One Soul campaign online by click- ing the donate tab. Also, any new money that you add to your Moya savings account as of today, Moya will contribute 1% towards our OHOS campaign on your behalf. We also have piggy banks for each family along with a brown envelope with your name on it. Save your loonies, save your toonies over 3 years and each time your piggy bank gets full, bring your donations to our church in your enve- lope and we will submit your campaign dona- tions on your behalf. If you have children who might like a piggy bank, we have one for them as well! To pick up your piggy banks, please come to our church, or contact myself, Heidy Novak 905-317-6002 / no- vakh@sympatico.ca to make arrangements. With all donations through this OHOS cam- paign you will receive a tax receipt which would be separate from your regular week- ly/annual church offerings and contributions. This campaign was very challenging for all volunteers working on it because we believe in trusting not pressuring our parishioners. Many of you could be receiving a call over the next month or so regarding this campaign. The intentions are not to push for donations, but rather to answer any questions you may have, vent if you need to, and help you with the process if you are interested and able to participate. So please, when we call, be kind and understand that we are all just trying to do the best that we can for our parish that I know we all appreciate and love! God Bless! It has been some time since we tasted this tradition- al treat, so keep in touch as we introduce more details in the weeks to come. Parish Council - Heidy Novak Iz župnijskih oznanil smo izbrskali nasled- nje zanimivo obvestilo, ki ga je, v nedeljo, 2. decembra 1962, župnik gospod Alojzij Tomc prebral ob koncu maše: »Četrtek je god Sv. Nikolaja, škofa iz Mire v mali Aziji. On je eden najbolj slovečih svetih mož v vzhodni in zapadni cerkvi. To lepo navado bomo obnovili danes. Ob treh popoldne pride sv. We cordially invite our parish community to attend a Memorial Mass for deceased members of our Catholic Women’s League and Slomšek Altar Society on Wednesday, Nov. 11th at 7:00 PM. Together we will pray for and remember our dearly departed sisters. Due to precautionary safety measures we will not be hosting a reception after the Mass as has been our custom in the past. Thank you for your attendance and under- standing. LONDON - SV. MAŠA 8. NOVEMBRA Vsako leto smo imeli na vernih duš dan, t.j. 2. novembra popoldne sveto mašo v mavzoleju pokopališča sv. Petra v Londonu. Ker letos ne moremo imeti svete maše v mavzoleju, jo bomo imeli v cerkvi St. John the Divine, v nedeljo 8. novembra ob 3:00h popoldne. 32. NEDELJA MED LETOM Bogomir, škof 8.
