Slovenska župnija sv. Gregorija Velikega | St. Gregory the Great Slovenian Church 32/48 Številka - Number / Leto - Year 02. 09. 2012 22. NEDELJA MED LETOM 22nd SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME Fr. Drago Gačnik sdb ŽUPNIK - PASTOR Naslov - Address 125 Centennial Pkwy N Hamilton, ON L8E 1H8 Telefon - Telephone 905-561-5971 Fax 905-561-5109 E-mail gregory_sdb@cogeco.ca Web page www.carantha.net Gospod, h komu pojdemo? »Poslušajte me vsi ter umejte! Pomešali so božje s človeškim. Postajali so vedno bolj jetniki postav. Zato Jezus kliče k izvirom: v notranjost, v tisto skrivnostno središče, v srce, v katerem lahko človek začne graditi prave odnose brez hinavščine in sprenevedanja. V pismu apostola Jakoba beremo: »Sprejmite v krotkosti vsajeno besedo, ki more rešiti vaše duše. Bodite pa vršitelji besede in ne le poslušalci, ki bi sami sebe varali.« « SLOVENSKA ŠOLA SLOVENIAN SCHOOL Dear parents, September is here and the school doors are open for another year. This means that it will also be time for SLOVENIAN SCHOOL. If you have a child in Senior Kindergarten or older in English school, he/she is eligible to enroll in Slovenian School. Be proud of your culture and heritage! As descendents of our small Slovenian nation, let's make it possible for our children to become acquainted with their ancestral homeland and learn Slovenian. One day they will thank you for having the foresight and the interest in sending them to Slovenian school. We all feel the need to offer our children extra curricular activities in sports, music, dance, etc. Don't you think that it is just as important to offer them the opportunity to broaden intellect by learning the language of their parent or grandparents? We urge you to think about it and send your children to SLOVENIAN SCHOOL! Our programs are easily comprehended. They are geared towards the ability of the children. They are made along the lines of the ones we use in English schools so that they can be easily followed and understood. Our level one program is geared towards children who do not speak any Slovenian. Accordingly, they concentrate on vocabulary building by listening to stories, tapes, videos, games and conversation, etc. - with no formal reading and writing, to prepare them for level 2 where they will be eased into reading and writing in Slovenian only when they are ready for it. Registration for SLOVENIAN SCHOOL is on September 15, at 9:00 A.M. in the classroom behind the upper hall. Although our goal is to teach the children to read, write and speak Slovenian, more importantly, it is to instill on them a Slovenian identity, a feeling of love and pride towards their Slovenian roots and their cultural heritage, which your own parents worked so hard to maintain. Because our Slovenian School is a part of the Slovenian community, it also gives the children a sense of belonging. It is a place where they make lasting friendships. Our children are the guarantee for the continuance of our Slovenian identity. It is important that we work together to keep their interest alive. We, on our part, are striving to make it interesting for them. In the summer of 2000, 2004 and 2008, we organized an excursion of Slovenia for them, to give them the opportunity to see and experience Slovenia, first hand. The excursions were unforgettable for the children, a great success, so we look forward to organizing another one down the road. In turn, dear parents, you must do your part as well! Please give SLOVENIAN SCHOOL your full consideration and register your children on Sept. 15. If you have friends, who are of Slovenian background and this notice does not reach them, please tell them and encourage them to send their children to our school. If you are uncertain about enrolling your children in Slovenian School, please feel free to visit our school and see its set up, observe our classes and talk to the teachers. Be proud that you are Slovenian and give your children the same opportunity! We look forward to seeing you at REGISTRATION on SEPTEMBER 15, from 9:00 A.M. to 11:00 AM Sandy Allen - Principal Slovenian International Language School iL dinem 1?» inoili-ir Sep. l6, 2012 H ssL IOŠOO äiMi r ig of the TOF & Dil at li^oo noon Special guest: Fr. Response: O Lord, who may dwell in your tent? Second Reading James 1:17-18. 21-22. 27 The antidote to false piety: true religion is intensely practical. Gospel Mark 7:1-8. 14-15. 21-23 Authentic tradition deals with the essentials -not the peripheries - of life. True purity is a matter of the heart, not of hygiene. Illustration The musical Fiddler on the Roof opens with a striking scene: a lone man balances precariously on the top of a roof, playing his violin. This is a symbol of the life of the Jewish people living in Tsarist Russia - with all its dangers, hardships and problems. Tevye, the main character, equates their life with being a "fiddler on the roof - they are trying to scratch out a cheery little tune without falling and breaking their neck. "How do we keep our balance?" he asks. "That I can tell you in one word: Tradition! Every one of us knows who he is and what God expects him to do." There is a tradition for every activity, from what to wear to how to sleep. Following tradition is what enables the people to keep their balance - to survive and even have joy in their difficult lives. Tevye knows: "Without our traditions, our lives would be as shaky as a fiddler on the roof!" Gospel Teaching The Jewish people of Jesus' day were also living in perilous times. And they too clung to their religious tradition to help them survive. That tradition was, after all, given to them by God through Moses, as our first reading clearly indicates. And yet often, in the Gospels, Jesus was accused of rejecting that God-given tradition. But for Jesus it was the religious leaders who had got the balance wrong. They were focusing so much on the minute rules (the "human traditions"), which had gradually been added over the centuries to explain the Law of God, that they had lost sight of what the Law was for. The Law had become an end in itself, people had lost sight of its original purpose: to help the people to live as God intended them to live. In that beautiful phrase, Moses said: "Observe [the laws] ... that you may have life." That is what God wants - that we should have life, and have it to the full. The laws are given to help people to live fully, to live humanly, so that we can reach our full potential. They aim to prevent us settling for less, to stop us being less than human, less than God's children, in the way we conduct our lives. Jesus didn't reject tradition. In fact, he was steeped in the Jewish tradition, as we see when he quotes the prophet Isaiah: "This people honours me only with lip-service, while their hearts are far from me." The kind of tradition that Jesus says is good and healthy is when people worship God with sincerity, in their hearts and in the way they live, not just with their prayers and external religious rituals. Prayer and worship are worthless if they are disconnected from the rest of life. What the Pharisees were upholding wasn't living tradition, but dead traditionalism: doing things for the sake of doing them, because they've always been done that way; making laws more important than people; judging people by the externals; reducing religion to rule-keeping - worshipping God in the right way, saying the right prayers, mixing with the right people, eating the right food. These, as Jesus indicated, don't of themselves make you a good person, a holy person. True religion is about how you show your love and respect for God through your love and concern for your neighbour. That is the healthy balance - authentic tradition. Or, as St James put it: "Pure unspoilt religion... is this: coming to the help of orphans and widows. and keeping oneself uncontaminated by the world.. Application What is it that contaminates us, makes us unclean, not truly religious? Jesus mentions a whole list of what he calls "evil intentions": "fornication, theft, murder, adultery, avarice, malice, deceit, indecency, envy, slander, pride, folly". These are all sins against our neighbour, ways of manipulating, using, deceiving or harming others. Simply keeping religious rules like worshipping in the right church, observing holy days and fasts, will not give us life or make us pure in God's eyes. What puts us into a healthy, life-giving relationship with God is when we treat our fellow men and women with kindness, consideration, respect, compassion and love. It is when we marry our inner convictions, the values we cherish, with our actions. The heart of true religion is never mere external observance, and never simply otherworldly. Life -giving religion is grounded in daily reality and looks outwards to our neighbour. That is the tradition which gives life and leads to the promised land of God's kingdom.
