Odlomek predstavlja začetek življenja Izraela v obljubljeni deželi in svobodi. In res, »zavoljo Kristusa smo torej poslani«. (Prim. Oznanjevalec 2004) BANKET DRUŠTVA SV. JOŽEFA V nedeljo, 24. marca 2019, je društvo sv. Jožefa z zunanjo slovesnostjo praznovalo svojega zavetnika. Milka Ferko in Sidonia Poppa sta prebrali berili, Dan Demšar in Peter Novak pa prinesla darove. Zadnje čase vsakokrat doda nekaj novega, kar popestri tradicionalno slovensko kuhinjo. Vse navzoče je pozdravil predsednik društva g. Jerry Ponikvar. Pred kosilom smo še blagoslovili hrano in potem uživali ob dobrotah in prijateljskem klepetu. Proti koncu so še izžrebali srečne dobitnike nagrad. Petru sta pri tem pomagale Abby in Holly Archer. Jožef še dolgo združuje in zbira. VESTNIK 2019 | 147 Jožetom in Jožicam! Francka Seljak 148 | VESTNIK 2019 Introduction to the Niagara Button Boxers: Over the last 14 years, The Niagara Button Boxers have enjoyed playing at many locations and at various cultural events across Ontario. You may have seen them playing at several Slovenian Parks, including Lipa Park picnics, the Niagara Folk Arts Open Houses, Slovenian Days, at BLED's Polkafest, at Simon Gregorčič Farm's 2018 Button Akordion Rocks event, at SAVA's Pub Nights and also at their 2019 New Year's Day Celebration. What you may not know is that during this time, they played the Lobby Show at Roy Thomson Hall in Toronto, at the Facer Street European Festival in St. Catharines, at the Essex County Czech Fish Fry, at the Scotiabank Oktoberfest in Niagara Falls, and they have been invited back to play again this year. They played in bars, like the Locke Street Brewery in Port Dalhousie and the Breakwall Brewery in Port Colborne. They have also performed in church halls, like Holy Rosary Parish in Thorold, Our Lady Help of Christians and Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal in Toronto, and are happy to be invited back to St. Gregory the Great this afternoon! They released two CD's and are now working on a third CD. As part of their community service, they entertain once a month at the Heidehof Home for the Aged in St. Catharines and have performed at several Oakville Senior' Residences as well. The Niagara Button Boxers have been privileged over the years to be invited to play with Walter Ostanek and his Band, the Toasted Western Swing Band and with Tony Habjan and the Nutones. Although there are seven current Band members, on stage with us today are: Derek Uhlik (leader/piano accordion), Paul Brittain (drums), Zdravko Augustin (button box) and Sue Augustin (button box). They are also joined by Joe Razpotnik on the baritone. Over 14 years, two things remain the same: they remain a unique multi-cultural Band and they continue to play for the love of Slovenian music! Please welcome the Niagara Button Boxers. He was tireless in the mission of evangelizing and educating poor youth. But his hard-working attitude was not the reason he was so successful in leading youth to become good citizens and good Christians. His real secret of success was his devotion to the Sacraments and our Blessed Mother. Don Bosco was also the recipient of many supernatural visions from God. He used these spiritual experiences not only for his own benefit, but also for the instruction of the boys under his care. In particular, he would frequently relate to the boys how to stay protected against the devil. Below is his advice and, if followed faithfully, Bosco claimed "the devil will never prevail against you." Listen. There are two things the devil is deathly afraid of: fervent Communions and frequent visits to the Blessed Sacrament. Do you want many graces? Visit Him often. Do you want Him to grant you only a few? Visit Him but seldom. Do you want the devil to attack you? Rarely visit the Blessed Sacrament. Do you want the devil to flee from you? Visit Jesus often. Do you want to overcome the devil? Take refuge at the feet of Jesus. Do you want to be overcome by the devil? Give up visiting Jesus. Visiting Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament is essential... if you want to overcome the devil. Therefore, make frequent visits to Jesus. If you do that, the devil will never prevail against you. Friends, visits to a church or chapel and spending time in front of the tabernacle and/or attendance at Eucharistic Adoration at a chapel or parish near you, are a huge way and means of avoiding sin. How? Because visits to the Blessed Sacrament - time in the presence of our Eucharistic Lord - strengthens us against the devil. As we continue this season of Lent, work hard to fight off the temptations of the devil. Through the practices of prayer, fasting and almsgiving, get strength to resist his tricks - especially procrastination, mediocrity and distraction. And one fantastic weapon and tool that we have to keep the devil away from us is TIME BEFORE THE EUCHARIST. - By Fr. Steve Ryan, SDB Five Things to Remember_ Prayer is not a spare wheel that you pull out when in trouble; rather, it is a steering wheel that directs the right path throughout. Why is a car's windshield so large and the rear-view mirror so small? Because our past is not as important as our future, so look ahead and move on. When God solves your problems, you have faith in His abilities; when God doesn't solve your problems, He has faith in your abilities. When you pray for others, God listens to you and blesses them. So... when you are safe and happy, remember that someone has prayed for you. Worrying does not take away tomorrow's troubles - it takes away today's peace. - Author Unknown VESTNIK 2019 | 151 PREPARATIONS FOR EASTER_ In the spirit of Easter and having had many discussions throughout the year regarding our faith and our understanding of it, we know that there are many questions out there. We have decided to introduce a discussion session where all your questions can be answered and discussed in an informal and comfortable setting. We are pleased to announce that we will have among us a theologian from Slovenia, Fr. Ivan Stuhec. He is an expert in this field and fluent in both Slovenian and English. He will be already for confession at 5:30 p.m. What exactly is the anointing of the sick? When should it be administered? What does it mean if you don't get this sacrament on time? Why do we confess our sins to a priest? Why do priests wear black? What is the church's view on suicide? Why do we have so many rituals? These are just a few of the questions we may have... so, we invite all our parishioners 18 years of age and older to come out and get your answers. This discussion period will take place on Wednesday, April 10th after 7:00 p.m. Mass beginning at 7:45p.m. We hope that many of you will come out and take advantage of this opportunity to get your questions answered. '-\ 4th Sunday of Lent Response: Taste and see that the Lord is good. First Reading Joshua 5:9-12 The people of Israel are called by God to celebrate their new life in the promised land. Second Reading 2 Corinthians 5:17-21 St Paul tells us that it is God in Christ who has drawn us back into his love and thus made us his ambassadors. Gospel Luke 15:1-3. 11-32 Jesus tells the story of the prodigal son and the loving father who forgives him to show us God's love and the chance of a new beginning, however sinful we have been. "He ran to the boy, clasped him in his arms and kissed him." Illustration Joe knew that he'd done wrong. He was allowed to play football in the garden. But this time the game with his friends had been a bit too exciting. And they'd ended up by trampling all over the new flowers that his mum had carefully planted only a few days before. Joe was really worried about what his parents would say to him. But when his mum saw the tears in his eyes and the sorrow on his face, she simply wrapped her arms around him. "Oh Joe," she said, "I know you're feeling sorry. But you know I love you more than I love those flowers." Joe told himself that he wouldn't be so careless again. 152 | VESTNIK 2019 When good parents forgive a child some fault they do so completely. Any half measures will leave the child unable to move on, still wondering whether it is worth trying to be good, and maybe failing again. When we forgive our children their faults, our forgiveness must be total and unconditional; when we forgive in this way we mirror the love and forgiveness of God. Gospel Teaching Our three readings speak in different ways of the immense generosity of God. The Book of Joshua tells of the new life God gave to the people of Israel when they escaped from slavery in Egypt and entered the promised land. Here is described how they finally reached maturity as they ate the produce of the land and no longer relied, infant-like, on the heavenly manna. There, at last, they had the opportunity to live with hearts open to God. We know, however, that the attempt failed. The nation continued to sin and could only be restored to a right relationship, reconciled to God, by the Father giving his unconditional love in and through the death of Jesus. In our second reading, Paul uses the verb "to reconcile" five times as he explores the depths of the forgiveness Christ has won for us and the implications of the new life which that brings. We are, he says, "a new creation"; God does not do things in small measure, halfheartedly: "in him [Christ] we... become the goodness of God". What a gift! What an immense calling! You and I in union with Christ can now act towards the world as "ambassadors", able to speak with others in the name of the Lord himself. We are not distant shadows of the reality, but God's intimates, sharing God's life, truly God's representatives. The well-known tale of the prodigal son should be seen in this way. It is not fundamentally a moral story about someone fallen on hard times who pulls himself together. No, it is all about the reconciling love of God the Father. God in the story is represented by the father, and we are the prodigal son. It is not a story of justice either, for the young reprobate doesn't deserve the forgiveness he receives. He has treated his father as if he were dead by demanding his inheritance in advance, and then added insult to injury by wasting it in a way that utterly defiled him and shamed his family. The father's outrageous love for his son is shown in the new identity he gives to the returnee: costly clothing, a ring denoting citizenship, and sandals, all signs of status and respect. As if this were not enough, he lays on a lavish banquet as well. The parable is talking about God's attitude towards us in just the same way that Paul does: "God in Christ was reconciling the world to himself, not holding men's faults against them." Application There is a challenge here too, made clear when we reflect on our previous Lenten Sunday readings. The temptations of Christ prepare him for his radical ministry of reconciliation, while the transfiguration shows us the glory that is to be revealed in Christ. We too are at a crossroads: we can, like the elder son, stick with the tired old ways and reject the Father's offer of new life, just as Israel did time after time - or we can act with grace and humility in response to the Father's overwhelming generosity. What is it to be? This tale is not just about individual choices, but also about how we live as a Church. Forgiving others is probably the hardest thing any of us will ever be called to do, yet without it we cannot live, either individually or corporately, as the new people of God, as images of Christ.
