The mayors,' Dr. Luci asserted, are forever having to go to Ljubljana to plead their cases with the various ministries of the national government. The key problem is that the local governments have a great deal of responsibility, but very little power to tax. Dr. Luci and Aurelio Juri indicated this was one reason they were candidates in the upcoming elections on November 10 for the Slovene parliament. They want to work toward the decentralization of government in Slovenia. Aurelio Juri noted that he is Italian by nationaiity, yet despite this he won election in Koper by a large majority. He spoke about development plans for the port of Koper and mentioned there is an agreement whereby American warships visit the port four times a year. Slovenia also provides services to the ships, but Juri said in fact Slovenia is relatively more expensive in this respect than many other Adriatic ports. He noted that the visits of U.S. warships and sailors were positive, with programs and sporting competitions organized between the sailors and local residents. Asked if the port of Koper could handle larger ships than destroyers, Juri said it had been determined that the port was deep enough to accommodate an aircraft carrier, but that such a (Continued on page 2) sNsore!nber ^3, three Slovene mayors on a State Department k'**1 som V'S't t0 *be United States had dinner and a discussion ”el(l a, 4.e Uleveland-area Slovene Americans. Shown above is just a small part of the collection of printed and manuscript materials created by Slovene emigrants and their descendants around the world that has been collected and collated by Dr. John Arnez, a postwar refugee from Slovenia who lived for several decades in the United States and several years ago returned to Slovenia. Dr. Arnez has published several books on Slovenia and Slovene emigrants. In Slovenia, he is the editor of Pogledi, the publication of the Studia Slovenica Research Institute. The Institute is housed in the “Škofovi zavodi sv. Stanislava” in the northwest Ljubljana suburb of Šentvid. This is essentially a high school-junior college-level educational institution that was closed for the post-World War II period by the authorities, reopened after the democratic reforms of the early 1990’s, and which has since received considerable financial support from Slovene communities around the world. Two years ago, for example, the KSKJ led a major fund-raising effort to assist in the renovation of the complex, left in ruins by the Yugoslav Army, which had used it as a military base until its departure from Slovenia in late 1991. Shown in the photo is Dr. Arnež’s wife, who assists him in arranging the huge, invaluable collection, which continues to grow. Rudolph M. Susel Zarja celebrates 80"' anniversary with concert “Eighty Years of Slovenian Melodies,” a lighthearted skit depicting the life and times of the Singing Society Zarja since its inception in 1916, will be presented on Saturday, Oct. 26 at the Slovene Society Home in Euclid, Ohio. Zarja singers will entertain you with a bittersweet musical journey through time as we sing of Zarja’s beginning and then progress nostalgically but lightly through succeeding eras up to this, our 80dl anniversary. Isn’t it strange how time shortens-up as the years go by? From this vantage point, 1916 doesn’t seem such a great while ago after all; but to our then young founders, the thought that Singing Society Zarja would still be in existence 80 years into the future would undoubtedly have seemed inconceivable. To the young, 80 years touches on forever. To the elderly, looking back, it’s but a few yesterdays. Our present Zarja members harbor a strong kinship with our founders and with all members who have come and gone throughout the years. We hope to see many former Zarja singers from near and far at our celebration on October 26^. That would make our anniversary complete. We extend a cordial invitation to all to attend our SOth anniversary celebration. The evening will begin with a delicious family style dinner, prepared by our Slovenian cooks, which will be served from 5 o’clock to 6:30 p.m. This will be followed by our musical skit, after which there will be dancing to the tunes of the Ray Polantz orchestra until midnight. Price for this full evening of enjoyment is $17.00. reservations can be made and tickets obtained from Zarja members or call Vicky Kozel at 531-5542; Sophie Elersich at 531-8402 or Bar- bara Elersich at 1-216-257-2540. -Jennie Mramor Campaign passes 2/3 mark As of Wednesday, the campaign to sign up 60 new subscribers to the American Home newspaper stands at 43. AMERIŠKA DOMOVINA, OCTOBER 10, 1996 Jim’s Journal By Jim Debevec One of America’s most talented saxophonists, Duke Marsic sounded excited as-he called to talk about last week which he spent in the company of Slovenian guest-conductor Joze Privsek who led the Cleveland Jazz Orchestra in two concerts. Marsic was impressed with the members of the Cleveland Jazz Orchestra. “They are professional musicians who know good music and are excellent performers.” From Monday to Thursday, they and Privsek held rehearsals at the Cleveland Musician’s Union. Upon playing one of Privsek’s original scores for the first time, they broke out in applause in appreciation of the Slovenian’s talents. “There were about 400 who came to Tri-C College on Friday for the first concert,” Marsic said. “About the same number came for Saturday’s concert at the Euclid Civic Center.” Privsek was a little disappointed in the turnout indicating that wherever he appears in Europe, he usually plays before sold-out audiences. Besides leading the group through his own compositions, one of which he wrote just for this visit to Cleveland, Privsek conducted the orchestra in a number of standard big-band numbers. Marsic said the female singer also did a great job with some of the classic songs. I recall a visit to Lake Bled in Slovenia a couple of years ago where we happened to hear a performance of a big-band group playing at an outdoor patio at one of the big hotels overlooking the lake. The quality of these musicians indicate to me that native Slovenians have a terrific taste in music and a natural inclination to comprehend, appreciate and perform many American big-band standards. They are not necessarily limited to the polka beat which some peo- ple in America seem to solely associate with the people in the old country. On Sunday in Cleveland, Duke brought Privsek to St. Mary’s church hall for a delicious benefit chicken and pork lunch celebrating the 80tb anniversary of St. Mary’s Altar Society. Marsic noted that Privsek, who is the Artistic Director of the Radio-TV Orchestra of Ljubljana, will be representing Slovenia at a concert there at the end of June. Duke said he is interested in Slovenian mayors. (Continued from page 1) visit was not desired. The reason was that in the relatively light population of the Koper area, the arrival of several thousand sailors would cause serious problems. Juri also discussed the issue of the unresolved sea border between Slovenia and Croatia, and of problems involving certain parts of the land border. He expressed confidence that if cooler heads prevail, a solution to these matters acceptable to both sides should be possible. Danilo Siter noted he was pleased that the visit to the U.S. included a stop in Pittsburgh, where the group visited the Westinghouse Company. The Slovene nuclear reactor in Krško is a Westinghouse product, and Siter said he was reassured by the high level of competence he observed at the Westinghouse facility. Siter also proved an enthusiastic promoter of his area, with brochures and other materials indicating both the tourist attractions available in Krško and the readiness of various companies there to engage in joint venture projects. Also, Siter brought several case histories of families in economic need in his area. He hoped support could be found among Slovene Americans to assist the families, some of whom had individuals too ill to work or children needing additional schooling, etc. This material has been forwarded to a person in our local community, who will try to assist. Finally, Siter also met with local members of the Slovene Christian Democrat party. In addition to Cleveland and Pittsburgh, the group visited Hot Springs and Little Rock, Arkansas, and ended their stay with a visit to New York City. Rudolph M. Just consider the phone book of Slovenija as a “representative sample” of the Slovenian population. There will be some names missed, either because of monetary or economic status or because of the natural ending of some family lines. The dictionary interprets “picnic” as an outdoor social for which food is usually provided by the people participating. Most of us agree that picnics are normally an outside event, although not necessarily with the food provided by the participating people. The dictionary also gives another interpretation of “picnic.” It can also be, “an easy or pleasant time or experience. Our “Picnic in the Park” theme falls into the first description of a picnic... outdoors and food provided by the participants. Trouble is that at times we attract a drove of uninvited guests. Yep, happy as a bee, they go flitting about, buzzing with delight as they feast on the food spread on the tables. It is at such moments that our dear sweet ladies (and some men, too) shrink away in fear that they, too, may become victims of these adventurous visitors. Solution. It happened three years ago. As the date of our picnic drew near, weather reports indicated the possibility of rain. The question was, “Should we take a chance and go ahead with our picnic as usual or should we postpone it, or ... should we cancel it? Cancel the picnic? The vote was NO. Of course, none want to sit at a picnic holding an umbrella over their heads, so arrangement was made. to hold our “Picnic in the Park” in the Slovenian National Home Kenik Room as an alternative. No rain to worry about, and no bees to snitch our goodies. The ladies could let their guard down and relax in peace. Everyone had a wonderful time. Of course, our theme remains the same. It is still “Picnic in the Park” even if held indoors. This year our picnic was scheduled for Sept. 12^. By coincidence, this also happened to be Mike Vidmar’s 100th birthday, and since we certainly would want to celebrate the event with Mike on that day, the decision was to combine the two events. Thus, a picnic in the park and a 100th Mike Vidmar birthday celebration. It was a splendid idea, and we went “full steam” ahead with our planning. Come the Big Day! Because of the large response, we needed more space and so we switched down to the Lower Hall of the Slovenian National Home. Under the supervision of Frances Karnak and Ann Zgonc, there was a well organized hustle and bustle in the preparation of picnic foods to be enjoyed later. Hot dogs, a variety of salads, chips, coffee, soft drinks, and a large array of delicious pastries prepared and donated by the ladies. Our picnics would not be complete without popcorn balls. Each one received a Humphrey’s popcorn ball. Seven days before the big day, member Ann Zgonc called me suggesting that we invite Channel 8 to give coverage of Mike Vidmar’s 100th birthday celebration. Good idea. I then called member Sylvia Plymesser and asked her to make the contact, which she did with success. Thanks to Dick Russ we received very good coverage. Based on the calls and comments received from viewers, it was seen by many. During the course of the celebration, we were entertained by musicians Lou Trebar, Joe Zgonc, Frank Rich, Tony Baznik, Mike Vidmar’s son-in-law, and a Grandson (hope I did not miss anyone). It was now time to celebrate Mike’s birthday, starting with the music and all singing Happy Birthday to dear Mike. During this time a large birthday cake with candles lit was wheeled into our party room. The cake was a beauty created by Ann Tomsick. I won’t try to describe it to you, but I will try to describe the special top theme. When ordering the cake, Ann Tomsick asked me if there was anything special that I wanted to add to the cake. I stated that Mike has a doggie, Mike’s special friend and companion. Mike also loves gardening, and plants one every year. So, creative Ann went ahead and... using one corner of the cake... placed a miniature 2 story home with street sign reading Edna Ave. There was a fence surrounding the property in which was Mike’s garden with its lettuce and other vegetables, and flowers. Sitting in front of the house was faithful doggie. Mike was so touched that tears came. We, all of us, are happy that Mike is still in fair health. It was a privilege to be with him as he celebrated this his 100th birthday. The cake had 6 candles on it... one for each of his 20 years, and the 6th one for the future years. Anthony Brodnik, whose special hobby is making clocks, presented Mike with a beautiful clock built specifically for Mike. On it was inscribed Mike’s birth date, and his 100th birth date. Something to be treasured. Members of Mike’s family who were present as our guests, were overwhelmed by the love shown for Mike, and expressed their gratitude many times. Besides channel 8’s TV recording and also those taken by a family member, many photos were taken. I did not have the opportunity to take many, but was promised copies of those taken. I will then display them at our meeting. The long-awaited Amish tour time is here again. Tuesday, October 8th is the day. I will report on it in a future issue of this paper. Walls painted pastel yellows and reds stand shoul-der-to-shoulder with whitewashed plaster and unadorned stone. Buildings climb in tiers from the sea to ramparts dominated by an ancient cathedral and a campanile, which is a scaled-down model of the tower in Venice’s St. Mark’s Square. Narrow streets wind between buildings roofed with red tiles. Some avenues are connected by vaulted gates reminiscent of medieval architecture. Located on Slovenia’s Istrian peninsula, 60 kilometers south of Trieste and 10 minutes north of touristy Portorož, Piran is one of the •'•‘ost historic and attractive towns on the .Trthern Adn'-atic coast. There is no sign in this peaceful community of 5,500 of the terrible wars and ethnic atrocities that have scarred other parts of former Yugoslavia. The Slovenes, an ancient and relatively homogenous people, won their independence and established a republic after a 10-day battle in 1991. Since then, they have managed to avoid the madness that has consumed their former countrymen. Even though Slovenia, and coastal Croatia to the south, are now safe and peaceful, the regional turmoil has kept many uninformed and skittish tourists away. This is bad news for the local economies, but good news for sophisticated visitors interested in value and uncrowded attractions. Like many towns along the Adriatic coast, Piran’s history is measured not in centuries, but in millennia. First settled in prehistoric times by Illyrians and Celts, Piran’s site was known to ancient Greek settlers and traders. In fact, the town’s name is thought to originate from pyr, the Greek word for fire. Huge bonfires were once lit on the shore (where a more modern lighthouse now stands) to protect and guide ships on their way to the colony of Aegida, at present-day Koper, a short distance to the north. Under the successive rules of Romans, Byzantines and the Franks, Piran developed a prosperous export trade in salt, olive oil and wine. Like other coastal settlements on the northern Adriatic coast, the town eventually fell under the domination of Venice and remained subject to its authority for more than 500 years until 1797, when Napoleon conquered northern Italy. For the next 200 years, until Slovenian independence five years ago, Piran was passed between France, the Austro-Hungarian Empire, Italy, and, finally, Yugoslavia. A variety of cultures may have come and gone, but the dominant ambiance of Piran remains Italian. From the MARK PETRIČ Cerxin“d Master Technician PeLnr's Automotive Service Foreign & Domestic General Auto Repair (216) 942-5130 ..REAR 33430 Lakeland Blvd., Eastlake, Ohio 44095 / LOCATED n >. architecture - the Venetian campanile, the pastel colors, decorated stone portals, red-tile roofs, and carved doors -to the casual warmth of its outdoor cafes, and the cuisine of its restaurants, the community would be at home on the other side of the Adriatic. It may have closed its Italian Institute, and the use of Italian may no longer have official bilingual status, but Piranesians are still comfortable with the language and most tourists still come from Italy. Although visited most often by motoring day-trippers from other resorts along the coast, the town is not a place to explore by car. Streets are narrow and parking space, especially during the summer, is at a premium with a punitive hourly charge unless you are staying overnight at a local hotel. The best bet is to leave vehicles at the large, secure, parking lot at the southern entrance to town. Piran is a small, intimate place easily, and most enjoyably, explored on foot. Like the rest of Slovenia, the town devotes a great deal of attention and pride to its cultural life and history. Local guides proudly point out however, is saved for Piran’s most famous son: Giuseppe Tartini, the mathematician, music teacher, composer and violin virtuoso, who was born here in 1692. The maestro's greatest musical triumphs may have taken place elsewhere, and his genes may owe more to Venice than Piran, but the town’s main square is centered around a bronze statue of Tartini playing the Devil s Trill sonata - a tune I suspect only a Piranesian could hum without prompting. On one side of the square is a museum in the house in which Tartini was born. On another is an architectural memorial to the past: the town’s famous 1 S^-century Venice House, a tall, narrow building painted red with (Continued on page 7) Donations Thanks to the following for their donations to the American Home newspaper-Vincent Lauter, Barberton, Ohio -- $5.00 Alois Starič, Lachine, Quebec, Canada — $5.00 Mary Lacijan, Oak Lawn. 111.-$10.00 Drago Udovič, Wickliffa Ohio -$10.00 Ann Opeka, Euclid, Ohio - $20.00 that as early as the 14th century, Piran had a teacher dedicated to educating noblemen and wealthy citizens, and that the town’s school is one of the oldest in Slovenia. December 20,1949 We’ve been on the U.S. Transport Ship General Greeley for nine days and 3,520 miles. Today we made 402 miles. New York is 758 miles away. December 22,1949 Many of the passengers got up at 3 or 4 o’clock in the morning. I waited until 5. I put on my best clothes for the first time since we left land. At 8 o’clock we saw, in the fog, the first outlines of dry land: the New Jersey coast. There were many boats and ships, and hundreds of gulls. I marveled at the unbroken line of cars along the coast. They were all heading south. Was it a huge funeral procession? At 9 o’clock we entered the New York harbor area, and finally at 10 we saw the Statue of Liberty and the Manhattan skyscrapers. During the last few days on the ship, we’ve been hungry and thirsty. We would have been so happy to get some milk and bread, but they would not give us any. Today, in the New York harbor, we saw the crew throwing large packages of food overboard. At 10 o’clock a boat came to the ship with a customs officer and a number of medical officials. There was no need for X-rays, they could see right through our stomachs. In the afternoon, we stepped on dry land. We didn’t stop at Ellis Island-it was just going through decommissioning. They arranged us in alphabetical order arid brought each person’s baggage. It took 15 years preparing the new edition of the Holy Bible in Slovenian. The work was formally presented at an international symposium which was held in Cankar Home, Ljubljana from September 17 to 20. Alojz Rebula ended the program with a lecture on the event. Among the translators were Peter Weis, Kajetan Guntar, Marijan Peklaj, Jurij Bizjak, Terezija Snežna Vrečko, and Milan Holc. On Saturday, September 21, Slovenian radio amateurs got together in a hotel at Brdo pri Kranju to celebrate the 50th anniversary of their association. For the occasion radio amateurs were asked to contribute their recollections from those times. Interestingly, there are 6,900 licensed amateurs. Of these, 878 hold extra class licenses. As pointed out by David Sumner, KIBB, of the American Radio Relay League, the ratio compared very favorably with the ham population in the U.S. The oldest ham present was Ivan Mihev, who started “tinkering” with radio back in 1930. During the festivities participants at the hamfest were told about some of the emergency work done by Slovenian amateurs. The Association of Radio Amateurs of Slovenia handed out 16 certificates of merit. In addition awards were handed out to those hams who had contributed to the advancement of amateur radio. Janez Žnidaršič was singled out as the original organizer of the association. It was closed to worship on July 15, 1951. The Church of St. Agnes in Liboje had become unstable from the coal mines below it. However the parishioners made repeated requests that the church be repaired and re-opened for worship. Sunday, Sept. 22, services were conducted for the first time since 1951. The church is originally mentioned way back in 1540, Bishop Franc Kramberger of Maribor conducted the Mass. Historical Dictionary of Slovenia Slovenia is a newly independent European state, which until 1991 was a constituent republic of Yugoslavia. Since the collapse of communism and the disintegration of Yugoslavia, Slovenia has established a parliamentary democracy, and is building a market economy. The Historical Dictionary of Slovenia is a valuable reference work for students, scholars, researchers, and those interested in the economy, politics, culture and tourism. It introduces scholars and researchers to the rich history and culture of the Slovenes. It looks at Slovene aspirations for autonomy since 1848. Entries on education, geography, towns and cities, and economic development are also included. This reference work concentrates on the post-1945 period, and focuses on Slovene developments often glossed over in broader works on Yugoslavia. Important Slovenes and events of the last decade are highlighted and discussed extensively. This dictionary of 400 entries includes a brief historical survey of Slovene history, an extensive and comprehensive bibliography, and six maps. It is assembled by Leo-poldina Plut-Pregelj and Carole Rogel. It is printed by Scarecrow Press, 4720 Boston Way, Lanham, MD 20706. 1-800-462-6420. Fax: 301-459-2118. Romanja v avgustu. — Prvo nedeljo so poromala k Mariji Pomagaj v Lemont društva KSKJ - Illinois Federation, s sv. mašo ob 11. dopoldne, ko so s p. Bernardinom Sušnikom OFM somaševali Fr. Mnogi so si pa le vzeli čas za večernice. Drugi konec tedna je bilo tradicionalno romanje članic Oltarnih društev iz Clevelanda, ki so se jim tokrat pridružili članice in člani Slomškovega krožka pod vodstvom Franka Urankarja. Z avtobusom in svojimi avti so prišli že v soboto popoldne. Slovenski komunisti so okoli leta 1980 napravili zelo natančne študije o slovenskem gospodarstvu. Dve leti so bili v opoziciji, kar zadeva parlament, v ekonomiji pa so ohranili pretežno svoje položaje in s tem svoj vpliv. Bučar, Spomenka Hribar, in drugi. ( = 29. in 30. sept. Nasploh izredni kongresi, izredne seje, izredne volitve in nasploh izredna stanja pri nas, verjetno zaradi bližnje zgodovinske izkušnje, vzbujajo občutek nelagodja. 2.) 26.10.1996. Bodo dokončno sestavljene in objavljene kandi- datne liste. Leta 1944, ko je še divjala vojna, so nemške oblasti spet proglasile Primorsko za Kiistenland in so dovolile slovensko besedo. Naslednje leto so gospodarji ^orano odpovedali. Anton Kacin. V pripravljalnem odboru so bili še Maks Komac, dr. Martin Kranner, Viktor Prašnik, Benedikt Kosič, Jožef Vižintin in jaz. Kakšne so bile? Težave so bile predvsem finančnega značaja. Alojzij Novak blagoslovil temeljni kamen. Hijacint Ambrosi. Prisotni so bili goriški župan dr. Poterzio, prefekt dr. Nitri, kvestor Pervilli, predsednik pokrajine Chientaroli in pa seveda predstavniki organizacij iz Goriške, Tržaške in Koroške. V imenu odbora je goste pozdravil predsednik dr. An-ton ^acin. Če sem imel v njej kakšno dolžnost, sem jo opravil leta 1988 in 89, ko še ni bil vsakdo pripravljen stopiti v politiko. Kmetje so sey^a raz0_ čarani. $40: Ludvik in Danica Pa-hulje. Po $30: Jože in Fani Dimnik, Štefan in Anica Dimnik, Franc in Ivanka Šifrer, Jerry in Ivanka Vidmar ter Janez in Cveta Mahnič. Po $20: Anton in Ivanka Dimnik, John in Mitzi Pekete, Anna Mrak, Marija Previšič, Ernest in Anna Rogan ter Štefan in Emilija Zrim. Po $10: Mirko in Tončka Ambrožič ter Olga Novak. $5: Ivan in Johanna Hribar. Ga. Ker smo že vsi v letih, vsakemu kaj manjka, a z božjo pomočjo rinemo naprej. Marjeto Mrhar in g. Cirila in Metoda 80-letnica obstoja frančiškanske fare, kjer so delovali naši znani misijonarji oo. Hajnšek, Ambrožič, Feryan in drugi. V duhu smo bili mnogi prisotni z molitvijo in našimi čestitkami. Zelo ste me razveselili. Hvala Vam, res, iskrena hvala.
