Iti* Velika kampanja za mladinski oddelek SN P J Trajala bo devet mesecev; rekordne nagrade Dva atetmenta z* člane mladinskega oddelka opuščena v aprilu in maju. Določena je tudi kampanja za Prosveto, ki se začne 1. julija, ko bo naš dnevnik star 20 let. Glavni odbor SNPJ odobril idejo svobodnomiselne šole in izvolil odsek, ki izdela načrt. Konference angleško poslujočih društev v tem letu ne bo. Druge vesti s seje gl. odbora Glavni odbor SNPJ, ki jc zboroval 6., 7. in 8. februarja v Chi-cagu, je soglasno odredil veliko kampanjo «a pridobivanje otrok v mladinski oddelek naše jednote. Kampanja bo trajala devet mesecev in ne prične L aprila, zaključi pa 31. decembra 1936. Za meseca april in maj sta opuščena asesmenta za člane mladinskega oddelka SNPJ. Določena je dolga vrata nagrad, kakršnih še ni bilo pri naši organizaciji, za večja števila pridobljenih otrok v nad mladinski oddelek. Nad mladinski oddelek je spet nazadoval v letu 1935. Dne 31. decembra 1934 je bilo 14,331 otrok v mladinskem oddelku. V letu 1935 je pristopilo 1114 otrok, v tem času je pa umrlo 30, prestopilo v oddelek odraslih 1090 in črtanih je bilo 1583. Dne 31. decembra 1935 je bilo v mladinskem oddelku 13,862 članov, kar znači 479 članov manj kot ob koncu prejšnjega let*. Zato je potrebna velika kampanja, ki ne samo pokrije izgubo, temveč za-gotovi mladinskemu oddelku močan presežek. Napredek oddelka odraslih je znašal 778 članov v preteklem letu. Ob koncu 1934 je bilo v tem oddelku 33,302 člana. Med letom je pristopilo 1884 novih članov, nazaj aprejetih je bilo 1431 in iz pasivnosti v aktivnost se je vrnilo 280 članov, na drugi strani je pa umrlo 311 članov, črtanih je bilo 2379 in na pasivno listo jc šlo 127 članov, torej je ob koncu 1935 ostalo 34,080 članov v oddelku odraslih. Ob koncu leta 1935 je SNPJ štela v obeh oddelkih 47,932 članov ali 299 več kakor ob koncu 1934. Določena je bila tudi kampanja za nove naročnike za dnevnik Prosveto. Ta kampanja se prične 1. julija 1936 in trajala bo do konca leta, torej fteit jUiXcrr. Dne h juMja 1996 bo dnevnik Prosveta star 20 let in ta svoj jubilej bo list proslavil s slavnostno številko na 12 straneh, katera izide omenjenega dne. Drugi važni zaključki gl. odbora SNPJ so: Gl. odbor je sprejel resolucijo, s katero je odobril idejo svobodnomiselne šole za mladinski oddelek SNPJ. Izvoljen je bil odsek, ki naj izdela enega ali več načrtov z« realiziranje te Ideje. V tem odseku so Vincent Cainkar, Frank Zaitz in Ivan Molek. Ker je sklad bolniške podpore endolarskega razreda v dobrem «tanju, je gl. upravni odsek pooblaščen, da lahko opusti asesment enega meseca za člane v tem razredu, kadarkoli se mu zdi umestno. Gospodarski odsek sme v prihodnjih šestih mesecih kupovati poleg federalnih tudi dobre municipalne bonde. Upravni odsek je pooblaščen, da lahko izvrši predelavo jedno-tinega poslopja (postavi še eno nadstropje) ali lahko kupi sosednjo Bergerjevo hišo ali pa gleda za novo poslopje, karkoli bo najbolj praktično za jednoto. Pavel Berger je pred gl. odborom izjavil, da najnižja cena njegove hiše je $38,000. Predlog, da se letos spet vrši konferenca angleško poslujočih društev, je bil odklonjen; prav tako je bil odklonjen predlog br. I.okarja, da je I*bor day vsako leto tudi dan SNPJ. Vršila se pa I>o skupna proslava angleško poslujočih društev v Pennsylvania prihodnje poletje. Na priporočilo konference angleško poslujočih društev Je bil izvoljen atletski odbor, v katerem so Jeršln iz W. Allisa, Wis., Oskar Godina Iz Chicaga, I^»kar iz Clevelanda in Kosela iz Am-fcridgeja, Pa., dočim je Vincent Cainkar jednotln zastopnik. Upravni odsek sme nabaviti za jednoto filmski aparat za snemanje filmov v svrho propagande za SNPJ. Iz poročil gl. odbornikov: Gl. porotni odsek je v drugi polovici leta 1935 rešil 17 spornih zadev. V drugi polovici leta 1935 je bilo 52 slučajev odškodnin manj Ko v prvi polovici, vendar je bilo 237 slučajev operacij (največ na slepiču) In telesnih poškodnin, za katere Je SNPJ izplačala t skupni vsoti $19,543.58. Jednota Je izplačala $131,587.31 bolniške podpore članov v vseh razredih v drugi polovici leta 1935. Iz sklada izrednih podpor Je bilo Izplačanih $9843.20 v drugi polovici preteklega leta. Navzočih je bilo 24 zastopnikov in uradnikov, ki «o reprezentirali društva št «5. 144, 14«, m. 263. .12«. t 491. Voditelje, junake in bogove potrebujejo fašisti in drugi hlapčoni. Demokracija jih ne potrebuje in ne pozna! C« ae danes apet »pomnimo rojatnega dneva Abrahama Lincolna, storimo to a popolnoma drugega stališča in z drugačnim motivom kakor to delajo ameriški patriotje, ki vidijo v Lincolnu — legendarnega junaka, kateri je naklonil Združenim državam zmago v civilni vojni in to zmago je potem plačal a avojim življenjem. Po nalem mnenju nI bil Lincoln noben junak, noben bog in slab voditelj. Z vojno in zmago Je imel Lincoln malo opraviti; ta posel so izvršili drugi. Slovenska narodna njih gotovo zato, ker se sama podporna jednota bo s svojo sebi bolj dopadem kot sodnikom, svobodnomiselno šolo poučeva- Ker sem v odboru, sem poskrbe- a in pripravljala svoje člane, la, da takorekoč te sodnike malo da bodo sposobni stopiti v novo "preblufam", zato naj omenim, družbo, kadar pride čas za to. 1 da imamo zadnje nagrade skoraj starim in mladini. Ali ne znači to, da bi bila aka Aola koristna? Morda ne toliko organizaciji ko članstvu kot skupini in posameznikom. Pazno zasledujem razmotriva-nja glede Sole v Prosvetl. Ako se pride do zaključka, da se ustanovi taka Aola ter prične s poukom in pojasnjevanjem resnice, bo brezdvoma u-Rpeh in priznanje tudi. Največja Akoda je, da se nI pri naAi organizaciji nekaj po^ dol• nega že ustanovilo pred 25 ali vsaj pred 20 leti. Toda kdo bi si bil mislil, da se bodo razmere v toliko izpremenile v tako kratki dobi kakor so se. Nekateri kričačl so zavpilt, da tako Aolo hoče imeti urednik Proave« te, drugi zopet, da to hočejo socialisti. K»j kmalu se bo zopet kdo oglasil in zavpil, da to hočejo komunisti. Vse drugo, le pravega vzroka ne vidijo in ga noče* jo videti, ker so aa vse drugo sla» pi. razrn za svojega boga —$! Da j* taka Aola potrebna, če« tudi malo potno, priznava vnaJi za v cm len delavec, ki *ku*a živeti z duhom čas«. Tisočletne doktrine, fraze, dogme — danes več ne odgovarjajo potrebam. Ime ne igra važne vloge. Važno je, če se bo uresničila? Potem je važno, kako se bo izvrševala naloga, katera bo potom te ustanove poverjena učiteljem? Kot sem že omenil, zaskdujem razprave v Prosveti glede šole. Podanih je bilo več priporočil, morda ne bo škodovalo, ako podam tudi svojega, katero pa se bo seveda tikalo le večjih naselbin in v prvi vrsti mest, kjer so naAi člani kompsktno naseljeni. V prvi vrsti je treba izbrati n»črt. ki bo odgovarjal Ae drugim potrebam našega članstva, ki bo privlačen in ki se bo. ako bo prav zamišljen, tudi sam vzdr-čeval » Maj n»črt je tak : I. V mestih, kjer je več druAtev SNPJ, naj ae glede te zadeve združijo. 2. Združena druAtva naj si nabavijo primeren koa zemlje na d leli, ne predaleč od mesta, kjer naj se postavi poslopje, ki bo odgovarjalo za zborovanja, predavanj». m»le plesne z*b»ve; prostor za piknike, letovanje (kempanje), posebno za mladino. Tu se bi shajalo članstvo, posebno poleti, ob večerih, ob sobotah in nedeljah. Tu bi se pri- bilo v, skladu z izobrazbo, ki bi bila zapopadena v tej ustanovi, z Dr. Elbert K. Fretwell, profesor na Columbia univerzi, se je izrazil na svojem predavanju 81. jan. 1936 v Clevelandu, da moramo priznati dejstvo, da je da~ nes naj privlačnejši, najpopular-nejAi in tudi najefektivnejši način izobrazbe v kempah, da mladina danes kar nori za to kempo in je pripravljena vse prenesti, samo da ji je dovoljeno v kempe. Torej, ako je to priznano dejstvo od take osebe — bržkone ste tudi sami že zapazili, da je to resnica — potem smo lahko prepričani, da bi nekaj podobnega uspelo tudi pri nas. Erwln ABRAHAM LINCOLN came into quite a different world from that of Jefferson. When he entered public life the development of «team transportation was changing the lace of the country, bringing with it problems which Jefferson had never been even called upon to think about. He was less fortunate than Jefferaon in his intellectual surroundings. Lineoln literarally had to hew hie way to achieve an education. Jeffer-wn absorbed knowledge in the coterie of older men at William and Mary College, and was not only very active in the affairs of the colonists lesding VSP to the Revolution but had themselves, instead of only permit-the tremendous advantage of coming1*'"" " in direct contact with the intellectual life of Europe when on missions there for the new nation. Lineoln Revered Constitution Lincoln, having had no relations as had Jefferson with those who had fashioned the Constitution, looked upon it in his early life with the "reverence" which Jefferson spoke of in the quotation which we have just set down. It took the Dred Scott Decision to shake Lincoln's "belief in the inviolability of the Constitution as well as his veneration for the Supreme Court. When men were being persecuted in this country during the late World War because they had the courage to denounce it, both Republicans and Democrats were very careful not to discuss Lincoln's attitude at the time this country was actually engaged in a war. It was sfter the decision of Chief Justice Taney regarding chattel slavery, that Lincoln began to say some plain thinga about the Constitution snd the Courts. While his mind wss rather more deep than agile, experience never failed to set him seeking to find the root of the matter. So we find him in 1850 saying in a speech at Cincinnati. "The people of these United States are the rightful masters of both Congress and courts." At about the same time he recognized 'In a'notheV address the folly of rigidity and the necessity of chsnge, saying, "Legislation and adjudication must follow and conform to the progress of Society." Lincoln Didn't Retpect Court* The expression of his attitude both towards the Constitution and the Courts was focused more clearly than at any other time in his inau- this country are found high in the councils of the Republican party which first came into national power with Lincoln as their candidate for the presidency. Lincoln on Labor In 1847 on the floor of Congress, Lincoln said these words whfch you will not find blazoned in any of the histories used in our public schools: "If we except the light and air of heaven, no good thing has been or can tor enjoyed by us without having first cost labor. And inasmuch as most good things are produced by labor, it follows that all such things of right belong to those whose labor has produced them. But it has so happened, in all ages of the world, that some have labored, and others have, without labor, enjoyed a large proportion of the fruits. This is wrong, and should not continue. To secure to each laborer THE WHOLE PRODUCT OF HIS LABOR, or as nearly as possible, ia a worthy object QI any good government/'«i We have capitalized the "whole product of his labor" because it was the first time in the history of the United States which this writer can find, that any statement of the right of a worker to the full product of his labor was ever uttered on the floor of Congress and as far as we have been able to find out, such a statement was never uttered again gural address in 1861. Many people in that body until Victor Berger and are familiar with the phrase, which, Meyer London entered Congress- as if uttered today, would mean a sen tence to jail—"This country with its institutions belongs to the people who inhabit it. Won't be on Front Page From time to time we have printed various statements of Lincoln regarding labor. It is a safe bet that these statements will not be given a prominent place in the Republican campaign book of 1030. It is also just as safe a bet that neither party will frontpage what Lincoln had to say or what Jefferson had to say on the Constitution of the United States and on the Supreme Court. The writer is closing this article with a quotation which he has never seen printed in the public press of this generstion. In view of the activities of the Liberty League, I need not stress its significance at the present time. It is taken from an address delivered by Lincoln at the Sanitary Pair at Baltimore in 1864. "The shepherd drives the wolf from the sheep's throat, for which the sheep thanks the shepherd as his liberator, while the wolf denounces him for the same act as the destroyer of liberty." The Reveliers' Column Jolly Alii» Lodge Went A Ills, Wis.—The 10th anniversary of Little Fort Lodge of Wau-aegan on Feb. 1 and 2 is over. Many a happy moment was spent at this great affair. However, I did manage to keep a diary of our home folks. After riding on some slippery roads we finally arrived at Wa a-kegan, and about in time to celebrate the opening of the gala event. The hall became a very colorful picture with all the various lodges present, and help make it a success. It was indeed a pleasure to meet old acquaintances and new friends. Everyone that attended, I'm sure, did not regret it. We camp ourselves with our old friends, the Pioneers. Dinner is being served. Between courses we have cheers, songs are cast upon the air, and what melody. \Ye had speakers representing various lodges. A great ovation fills the hall with cheers as our little leader, Adolph Yersin, gives his speech. It was he who led the largest group to the Anniversary. Speakers of various places talked. Mayors of North Chicago and Waukegan also gave a few words. After we got our desserts and the speeches were over, the tables were cleared off the floer. Not because the evening was over, but dancing was the next attraction. We danced to our hearts' content. Next morning we all got up bright and early. We took our usuol scroll. (Was the water ever good.) That afternoon we had a match with the girls of Waukegan. It's no use telling you, but we were badly trimmed. Then came the evening. Seeing that it was early we had to dance to accordion music. The orchestra arrived around 0 p. m. and modern dances were started. Johnny ani his Merrymakers furnished the music. Oh, and what music! Much to our discontent ,we had to bid a farewell sooner than expected, but then we still were a long way from homij^ I also want to thank the Mesaes, Zalesniks and Pecklays for their hospitality and kindness they have given us while we attended this gieat event. We appreciated it very much, and hope that we in turn can do the same for you some day. I also want to remind you that the Shrovetide Dance is coining, so get ready for it, end mask.
