Slovenska župnija sv. Gregorija Velikega | St. Gregory the Great Slovenian Church 10/51 Številka - Number / Leto - Year 8. 3. 2015 3. POSTNA NEDELJA 3rd SUNDAY OF LENT Fr. Drago Gačnik, sdb župnik - pastor Naslov - Address 125 Centennial Pkwy N Hamilton, ON L8E 1H8 Tel.: 905-561-5971 Fax: 905-561-5109 E-mail Gregory_sdb@ stgregoryhamilton.ca Web page www.carantha.com Hall rentals Cell: 905-518-6159 E-mail Hallrental@ stgregoryhamilton.ca Trdna opora v božji besedi Tretja postna nedelja nas nekako resnobno nagovarja. Edini Kristus ostaja, ker premaguje zlo in smrt. First Reading Exodus 20:1-17 The Lord who has brought his people out of slavery gives them his commandments. Second Reading 1 Corinthians 1:22-25 God's foolishness, the crucified Christ, is wiser than human wisdom. Gospel John 2:13-25 Jesus replaces the Temple with the temple of his own body. "Destroy this sanctuary, and in three days I will raise it up ." Illustration In days gone by this was the time of year for spring-cleaning. Today we hear about the practice less and less. It may be that with modern detergents and cleaning tools we stay on top of the world of dirt all year round. We also have much better lighting. In the past the darkness of winter made it difficult to see where all the dirt was accumulating. In rural areas it would be the time of rain and mud, which would be constantly brought into the house and not seen clearly in oil or candle light. In towns industrial smoke and grit would find their way indoors and decorate the crevices and tops of cupboards and windowsills. If there is the same dirt around now it tends to be chemical by nature and less visible, so we don't see the same urgent need to clean as the stronger sunlight enables us to see the cobwebs and streaky patterns that appear as though from nowhere. Perhaps this seeming invisibility has made us lazier. Certainly modern technology means that we do not have to use as much elbow grease to get rid of dirt. When did you last see someone on his or her knees attacking a doorstep with a scrubbing brush? We have also lost that community sense of this being the time and the occasion when everyone makes a shared attack on the dark residue of winter to bring in the sparkling new world of spring. Gospel Teaching John places his account of Jesus cleansing the Temple at the beginning of the public life of Jesus, whereas the other Gospel writers place it at the end, just before his passion. Their intentions are in fact similar. The synoptic writers offer the actions of Jesus as one of the final straws in his irritation of the authorities. Such an attack on Temple practices would be viewed as blasphemous by them and push them into arresting Jesus. John is concerned throughout his Gospel to portray Jesus replacing the great symbols of Israel's past with his own person. What more central symbol was there in the people's belief than that of the Temple? Here was celebrated the very presence of God, originally in the form of the tablets of the Ten Commandments handed down to Moses as the expression of the Lord's covenant with his people. For John this replacement of the Temple by the person of Jesus will lead ultimately to his passion, death and resurrection, but he wants his readers to be aware of this transformation as they read the rest of the Gospel. As ever in John's Gospel the timing of the event is significant. It is just before Passover, the occasion in which the freedom of the people from slavery is celebrated. Jesus in his person will be the freedom of those who follow him; as St Paul will point out, madness and foolishness to the Jews and Greeks, but for those who follow Christ the very power and wisdom of God. Application Jesus wanted to make the point that the people had lost sight of the real meaning of the Temple. Treating it as a commercial thoroughfare, they no longer placed God's commandments at the centre of their lives. As Jesus cleansed them of this abuse, however, he also pushed them to see himself as the new centre of their relationship with God. It is through their allegiance to him that they will be renewed and really cleansed. In this time of Lent we are asked to reflect on our own preoccupations and allegiances. Where is Christ in our lives? Do we have time for him or do we let our daily concerns and practices leave him little time or space? If our relationship with Christ is central, then the way we deal with the business of life will flow from that, and we will have a sense of peace and direction. If we try to work the other way round, bringing Christ into our lives as secondary or accidental assistance, we will find ourselves lost and confused. As John will have Christ say elsewhere in his Gospel: "I am the Way, the Truth and the Life." A core element to our Lenten journey is getting rid of what stops Christ being at the centre of our life and so uplifting us with the gift of his Spirit. Whether it is spring or autumn in our world, the need for new life remains the same.
