State Day and Convention was held on Sunday, April 23rd, biginning with a High Mass at 10:30 at St. Mary’s Help of Christian Church, The Mass was said by Rev. Father Joseph Gole, our spiritual advisor of Br. 17. Rev. Father Matthew Setnaear was unable to have Mass at that time. The combined choirs sang the Mass and hymns under the direction of Miss Josephine Imperl and Sister I^ouise the organist. The dinner was held at St. Mary's Auditorium where many members and their friends enjoyed a full course turkey dinner. The opening prayer was said by Rev. Fr. Claude Okorn, our spiritual advisor. Among our distinguished guests were the following: Rev. Claude Okorn, Rev. Matthew Setnicar, Rev. Jerome Ziegler, Rev. Joseph Gole, State Pres. Rose Kraemer, Honorary Pres and Foundress, Marie Pt'island, Supreme Pres Josephine Livek, Mr and Mrs Anton Verbick, Mr. and Mrs. Alvin Glojeck, attorney, Mr and Mrs. John Pet-rich. Mrs. Floryan was presented a beautiful corsage of orchids and given gifts by Mrs. Schlosar, Mrs. Jackie Nimmer and our Supreme Pres, Josephine Livek. Marie, as we all know her, has always been and is a hard and faithful worker. She is really the backbone of our branch. Marie held office of treasurer in 1940 and ’41 then became secretary in 1942 and has remained our faithful officer all these years. She has really improved our branch thru her capability and wonderful know-how. A beautiful cake, shaped like an open book, was baked by Mrs. Mary Petrich and presented to Mrs. Marie Pris-land, our Honorary President and Foundress. You would really have to see this cake to know its beauty and the fine work done on it. It was very nice of Mrs. Petrich to bake and decorate such a beautiful cake. A short program was intermingled with the distinguished speakers and songs were sung by the St. Mary’s Help of Christians 7:30 Church Choir under the direction of Josephine Imperl and Sister Louise, organist. A solo was sung “Ave Maria” by Mrs. Janet Oman and a duet by Mrs. Oman and Mrs Marion Marolt, our vice-pres. We had a wonderful impersonation of an immigrant done by Victor Kraly; he was hilarious! Everyone enjoyed the program. Many thanks go to Tony Verbick who did a wonderful job as Master of Ceremonies. Thanks to the Caterers and committee for a fine job and also to the husbands, Tony Marolt and Frank Muran who helped us a lot. At the Wisconsin State convention, Mrs. Mary Petrich, Supreme officer of K.S.K.J. presented Mrs. Marie Prisland an artistically decorated cake which she baked herself. The inscription on the cake was: Congratulations Best Wishes Marie Prisland to Founder Branch 17 Slov. Everyone is proud to have among us such an outstanding pastor celebrating this great event. The choir singers at Mass and at hall were magnificent. We congratulate our pastor, Msgr. Butala upon this event and wish him many more years of health working in the Vineyard of our Lord. His sister Catherine, his housekeeper for many years, is our loyal member. We were honored to have with us at our April 25th meeting, a very special guest, Mrs. Pauline Ozbolt of branch no. 2, Chicago, 111. She enjoyed visiting with many old acquaintances and making new friends. An event of the social hour was the showing of movies scenes from Europe, the “Slovenian picnic of ’61” held on the Rittmanic grounds and “the Christmas party of ’61”. Members seemed to be delighted to see themselves in action. Mrs. Emma Znidarcich will entertain next in her home on Tuesday evening, June 13, with Molly Starasinich assisting. Reporter, Gabrielle Lustig No. 23, Dawn Club, Ely, Minn. — Our meeting opened with prayer by Barbara Brennan. The minutes of the last meeting and secretary’s reports were approved as read. Our meetings are not very well-attended. Maybe the cold weather we've been having lately is keeping you away. We don’t have meetings during the summer months and will resume in September, again, when all are back from vacations. Eat it at least three times a week. Beans To all who came to the 12th National Convention in our city, we hope you had a wonderful time and do come again, sometime. After the business meeting, lunch was served by Mmes. Margaret Pacha, Mary Knapp, Angie Godec, Margaret Somrock and Mary Stubler. Mr. and Mrs. Lyle Brennan returned from a several weeks vacation in Seattle, Wash, and Lakewood, Cal., where they visited with relatives and friends. Our deepest sympathy to Mrs. Frances Zakrajšek and family on the loss of husband and father who passed away suddenly at his home April 21st. May he rest in peace. A speedy recovery to all who are convalescing. Ann Rowe, reporter have twice as much protein than meat, seven times as much minerals, ten times as much Vitamin B-l, four times as much B-2 and three times as much iron than meat has. Beans are concentrated food and should not be eaten with other concentrated food like meat, gravy, or nuts. They should be eaten with a salad and cooked leafy vegetables, followed by a glass of milk, buttermilk or cottage cheese. Eaten this way you may never know you ate them, your stomach will feel light and you will feel like a million. * * * “WHY DO WE HAVE so much trouble with overweight”, a homemaker asked her doctor. “Is it because we have too many vitamins In our food? We seem to eat less than our parents did who used lots more cream, butter and rich desserts and were not troubled by overweight.” Doctor: “We do a lot less physically. Grandfather usually had milked cows, fed the hogs and chickens before breakfast time. Grandmother didn’t have labor saving devices or the convenient foods we now enjoy. Ironing with a "sad” iron was a lot different than with a steam iron. Clothes didn’t wash themselves then. No — you can’t blame it on the vitamins.” • * * One of life’s toughest jobs is to avoid hurting the feelings of others without becoming a liar. * • * For married happiness it’s not so important to pick the right person, as to be the right partner. • * • A newly married husband was trying to teach his wife how to drive the family car, when the brakes suddenly failed on a steep downhill road. “I can’t stop,” screamed the wife. “What’ll I do?” “Brace yourself”, advised the husband, “and try to hit something cheap.” No. 24, La Saille, III.—We are very happy when the meetings are well-attended as the business at hand seems to go much more smoothly.
