Christ on the Cross—Christ of Chicago’s Loop We think everyone will find a message during this lenten season when gazing upon the picture of Christ on the cross—on the facade of St. Peter’s Church in Chicago’s Loop. The great marble figure of Christ seems to be nlive ini the agony of death on the cross — so that passers-by are struck by >its beauty and meaning. It seems to have achieved its purpose: “Nobody passes by without looking up to Christ on the cross.” Happy Easter Wishes! The Supreme Officers join in wisning the Happiest Easter to all members and friends. ZARJA *• DAWN OFFICIAL ORGAN OF THE SLOVENIAN WOMEN’S UNION OF AMERICA VOL. XXXIV — NO. 4 APRIL, 1962 LETO XXXIV — ŠT. 4 ~MINUTES OF~THE DIRECTORS’ SEMI-ANNUAL MEETING Home Office, Chicago, III., Feb. 26, 27, 1962 The semi-annual meeting of the Board of Directors of S.W.U. was opened on Monday morning, Feb. 26, 1962 at the Home Office in Chicago, 111., at 9:30 a. m. The following officers were in attendance: president, Antonia Tanko; founder, Marie Prisland; secretary, Albina Novak; treasurer, Josephine Železnikar and auditors, Anne Podgoršek, Victoria Faletič and Frances Gaspich, and editor, Corinne Leskovar. The first order of business was the examination of financial books. The audits completed, all the Directors visited the Metropolitan State Bank to examine and verify the contents of the safety deposit box there. All documents were found in order as specified in the secretary’s financial statement. The auditors expressed their satisfaction that all financial accounts and documents were found to be true and in order. The Directors continued the meeting at the Home office with the reading of reports which were accepted as read. PRESIDENT’S REPORT Greetings, Directors and welcome to our first Bi-Annual meeting in the new year of 1962. We have only two days and a great deal to be discussed and plan for the progress of our. S.W.U., so let us work hard and in harmony. Our Class B. Jubilee Campaign will soon be over and we do have our Auditor Vicki Faletič who han reached her goal of 35 points which entitles her to the free trip to Washington and the $35.00. Congratulations, Vicki. As of this time, I also have reports that Br. No. 50-73 and the new Br. No. 10i are working very hard to get their 35 points by March 31. It was a great pleasure for me to be able to attend the following State Conventions: first, Minnesota State Convention which was held at my birth-place Chisholm, Minn., on Sept. 10th and was very well attended by all the branches. I am very proud of my home state because in Minnesota branches are very active. It was the first to start having S.W.U. State Days, organized 20 years ago by Mary Lenich of Eveleth, Minn., which is being held every year by the branches in different cities. Second: On Sept. 24th, accompanied by 60 members and 10 Juveniles, we attended the Pennsylvania State Day in Pittsburgh which was held by Br. No. 26. On Oct. 8th I also attended the Illinois—Indiana State Convention Day which was combined with the 35th anniversary of Br. No. 2 in Chicago. I was very impressed at these meetings because the members had shown their ability and enthusiasm in working for a better Union and also making the State Day a grand affair. Felicitations are in order to all the State Presidents who have worked hard and have made their State Days a great success. Mrs. Mary Tomsic, State President of Pennsylvania has notified me that their State Day will be held by combined branches Nos. 71 Strabane and 106 Meadowlands. A Junior Bowling League composed of 40 juveniles has been organized by Vicki Faletič and Pauline Vogel. They bowl every Saturday at Grdina Lanes. Christmas Party was held on Dec. 17 with 118 children present from Branches Nos. 32, 25 and 50. Eastern Bowling Get-Together Tournament was held on Feb. 25 at Grdina Lanes with 24 teams ,an increase of 6 teams from last year. All the bowlers and spectators complimented us on the wonderful tournament we had. This makes me very happy. The above affairs I have attended and also given my services. I have also contacted Mr. Richards of the Grey-hound Bus Co. and got the itinerary for the trip to Washington and also for Canada. In the month of November I sent a letter and greetings to each branch to be read at their December meetings. On our Pots and Pans we have been receiving numerous letters and compliments which show that this page is well-liked. Corinne Leskovar is doing a marvelous job editing our lovely magazine Zarja—The Dawn. Founder, Marie Prisland who writes our Pots and Pans column and Oh, Ta Svet and sees to it that our money is well-invested, has recovered from her illness and we wish her good health so that she may be with us many more years. Secretary, Albina Novak also is keeping her post very well, doing her work efficiently. On March 4, a new branch (No. 101) in Bedford Heights was organized. Attending the official meeting were Albina Novak, Ella Starin, Vicki Faletič and myself. Initiated were eight members. On Feb. 5 they had their first card party with a packed hall and their clear proceeds were over $200.00. It was shown at their first meeting that this was going to be a very energetic group and I am sure that they will grow to be a large branch. It was a great pleasure to work the past six months with the directors and all the members and State Presidents and I am very thankful for their help and faith in me. Frances Chiodi has notified me that she is having the trip to Hawaii in the month of August and will mail the itineraries to all the branches. The European trip sponsored by our Zveza has reservations on the boat taken and only the plane in available. To all our travelers I wish a very safe and happy journey. Cleveland branches are working on having another big affair on Sept. 30; a Bazaar-Style show with members showing their wardobes and styling. On April 1, Branch No. 10 is celebrating their 35th anniversary, combined with the State Convention of Ohio and Mich. This will be held in Collinwood on Holmes Ave. I have tried to perform my duties to the best of my ability. In every one of the last six issues of Zarja, I have written of the activities current that month. In conclusion, may we have a pleasant session. Toni Tanko IT’S WORTH A PRETTY PENNY your 24 for Paper & Postage Two vital and expensive items necessary in the publication of ZARJA — THE DAWN, have been rapidly rising in cost — that is, Paper and Postage! The only solution to the problem of meeting the rising figure, is that each member contribute a small share in the expense. The Board of Directors at the last Semi-Annual Meeting, determined that A Penny for Paper and A Penny for Postage will be asked from each member, per month. So, when paying your monthly dues, and the secretary asks you for 2
