PERO, Editors and Publishers Entered as second class matter January 6th, 1809, at the Post Office at Cleveland, Ohio, under the Act ot March 3rd, 187$. V razredu B je dobilo 423 članov nad $500.00 bolniške podpore, 155 članov nad $1,000.00, 61 članov nad $1,500.00, 19 članov nad $2,000.00, 14 članov nad $3,000.00, 6 članov Hlad $3,500.00, trije člani nad $4,000.00, in en član nad $4,500.00. Imeli smo dva soda vina in 3 sode pive. Pozdrav ! i John Dolčič. Lepo vreme imamo in kmetje kosijq in spravljajo seno. Močilo je precej in bodo imeli dovolj sena. Anion Novak, Ribnica 84. No, sem pa predstražo potegnil nazaj in prepustil urednike njih usodi. Razne bolezni različno vplivajo na bolnike in pustijo različne posledice. "Kar ves je drugačen, odkar je imel pljuč nico." To dostikrat slišimo oc bolnikovih prijateljev. Ležite in bodite tiho. Prosim vas, pojdite." "Pat — bil je bolan — smrt-nenevarno bolan," je zavpila. "Ali ne vidiš? Saj ne more še stati. V zmoti ste. Obupno sem bil po-škodovan — kako, in zakaj, to vas ne briga. To naj vam ona pove, ako hoče. spravila me je semkaj, me skrila tu in mi med boleznijo stregla." Vzor gospodarja, moža in očeta, mirnega in blagega značaja. Bolehal je eno leto in pol. Hudo je bilo njegovo trpljenje, toda prenašal ga je brez godrnjanja, prav potrpežljivo. In koncem je mirno zaspal v Gospodu, previden s sv. zakramenti, dne 25. junija, 1932. Pavla. Kapitoi svobodne zemlje in mesto, imenovano v spomin »Grcrge Washingtonu, predstavlja najvišje ideale svobodnih mož. Vabljive cene store vse. Surtz vacationing somewhere in the East and quite a few of the boys repenting of their sins at the leisure of Lake county, the Central Committee is in for a quiet meeting at their next session. Mr. Surtz has more than earned his vacation; no one has worked harder than he to make the committee a success. Even the most exacting will admit that it really is a success. Just look what it did to the aforementioned boys. And this is not written in an attempt at sarcastic humor. What is meant is this: Sundry interested persons worked like galley slaves to form the Central Committee. Which they did, as anyone can see. Into their articles of incorporation (maybe that's not right, but you know what I mean), they wrote such high-sounding phrases as "promo-tion of fraternalism," "clearing house of the SDZ youth," and so forth. It's all right to put such as that into articles of incorporation — nobody reads them anyhow. But that wasn't their real reason for going to all that work; what they wanted was a committee for the promotion of more and better good times. Did they succeed? Just read on. After tackling • one or two set-ups they took on their first professional bout, the Barber-ton danče. Everybody knows what happened. They sailed through it like it was a cream puff; nothing to it. Elated with their smashing success they threw themselves into high gear at the very next meeting and out of their own little heads they thunk up the SDZ Olympic Day, which, by the way, is something you shouldn't miss for any reason. So much thinking all in one evening left them wilted and jitterish, gasping for another dose of good time. So, upon the kind invitation of ye hon editor, they held their next meeting at his cot' tage. The rest is history. Now what? O yes, I was decrying the evils of success. Well, you can see for yourself what it did to a group of young fellows. One success led to another and pretty soon success went to their heads.. And you see what happened, they got successful. In fact they got gorgeously so. They were so full of success they had to tell the world about it. And it seems that the world didn't care to listen. Odloga hočete. Vaš stanovski ponos je užaljen. Razumem in obžalujem." "Le še nekaj ur!" Bob je dolgo zrl v blagi Kitaj-čev obraz. "Pozabljate Blissa! Ta bo treščil vmes. Na koncu sva. Zadnji odlog: dam vam časa do osmih jutri zvečer. "Vem — toda to vam ne more razjasniti, kaj delata Phil May-dorf in profesor. Ne, rajši se držim svoje razlage." "Naj že bo, kakor hoče! Drevi prejme Madden svoje bisere. Vsaj jaz to iskreno upam." Pojdiva!" . ." "No?" Drevi ob osmih vam tukaj izročim bisere." "In vzroki?" DOUBLED MEMBERSHIP IN 1932 Chinning With Yancy Yinchell Your correspondent once wondered why people after an afternoon of bathing were unable to accept a slap on the back and a "How does that strike you?" without a grimace and a muttering under the breath that sounded strangely like that of Babe Ruth after the third strike. Well, he knows be was at the Modern Crusaders' .beach party and believe we he's still peeling (pealing) like the church organ on a Sunday morning. Speaking of the beach party, everyone enjoyed a seventh-inning stretch on the way out about half way between Cleveland and Madison when a tire decided to relax as per a health book I read recently. In the interim, Hermine Cer-nelich, who looks like a juven-^e, but who solomnly vows that she is an adult, indulged in both a horse-back ride and a motorcycle airing. George Kochman, self-ap-Pointed life guard, soon after dinner was hard put to decide upon a course of action when four persons decided to drown simultaneously at as many different points. He solved the Problem by shouting, "You'll bave to wait a while, the book says to wait an hour after eating before entering the water." Your correspondent happens to know that the Polks from Barberton were in town Sunday, but what puzzled him is ^hy Frances did not attend the beach party. The Crusaders think they the Clairwoods a vote of *banks for being the best represented group at their beach P^rty, but Yinchell knows bet-ter, they have Joe Kogoj Jr. to thank. At the last regular monthly Meeting of the Modern Crusades, Frank Modic and Joe Vra-tteza tried to look very impor-tant in their temporary roles as cooks. They might have succeeded very well if the tea tbey brewed had not looked and tasted like water from a used finger-bowl. To my amply proportioned, flapping and all-hearing ear comes the rumor that "Popeye" Is about to attempt news-wrjt-ing. Well, stranger things than that have happened, I once decided to be a columnist. NEWS CONTRIBUTORS TO SEND IN REPORTS Pleads With SDZ Members To Write Lodge Items By MARTIN VALETICH JR. With the clamor for an additional page for SDZ News still ringing in the ears of the Central Committee administration, the news to fill these pages has dwindled week by week, so that the editor has hardly been able to fill two columns, much less two pages. What has happened to all the contributors who were so active for several weeks? Certainly they cannot all be vacationing at once! Surely they have not taken ill simultaneously ! Come, come, you would-be journalists, there are events going on about you all the time that are figuratively crying out for publication and you are contentedly sitting back and allowing the poor things to continue to do so. Writing (disregarding script-ology) is as sure an index to one's character as life itself. Each week that you fail to contribute articles brings to the minds of your readers more forcefully the fact that you cannot be relied upon. Surely you do not want to leave the wrong impression with tho public at large. Irresponsibility is not a racial trait of the Slovenians, therefore it is up to you to wipe out the indications of such a blemish by regular, sparkling contributions to the page. -o- Have you talked to your friend about joining SDZ yet? Remember it's up to you to get one new member this year. CENTRAL COMMITTEE MEETING POSTPONED; LODGE NOTES' LIST tossing game, and now they are handing each other bouquets. I suppose their articles before long will be signed with an "X," (love and kisses). Unlike One-eyed Conelly, 1 couldn't chisel into the meeting of the Jolly Pals last night, but the whispers that emanated from their sacred sanctum seemed to denote something extra special for the next meeting of the Crusaders on Aug. 17. Let's watch for it! Miss Frances Nemec, a Comet, has come back from her vacation in Forest City, "Pa., and we certainly are glad that two weeks have only 14 days. Did you know that Joe Vra-neza plays trumpet in the Moose Club Orchestra which was heard in a recent broadcast over WJAY, and that Ignatius Milner, violinist, and Tony Vardian, banjoist, will be heard in an audition of hillbilly tunes on Aug. 2 at the same station? Surtz, who is at present vacationing in New York. The meeting will probably take place some time between Aug. 2 and Aug. 5. Notices shall be issued as usual. From Frank Chesnik Jr., we learn that he shall be unable to serve on the committee appointed to care for the track and field events of our SDZ Olympics, due to a grooming job (horse—not bride), which will necessitate his staying in Canada. We learn further from this most honored gentleman that his group, Warrensville, No. 31, will hold a wiener roast on Aug. 13. Information as to the time, price of admission, and plans was not vouchsafed, but will all come in due time, probably by means of the No. 31 News correspondent. Judging from the hospitality shown, the Central Committee representatives when they visited Warrensville, this little roasting affair should be one of the highlights of this summer's events. Several lodges have not as yet turned in their receipts and tickets for the Barberton dance. These persons are requested to straighten up with the secretary of the Central Committee as soon as possible, since he cannot clear accounts with the Magic City Juniors until this is done! 'Sfe'cretaries are also asked to turn in outstanding tickets for the Modern Crusaders' Beach Party, which took place Sunday, July 24. The Eastern Stars' Baseball Social on Monday evening, July 25, proved quite successful, financially and socially. The attendance amounted to about 150 persons and accounted for about six of the English-conducted lodges. CRUSADERS' NINE READY TO CLICK The Modern Crusaders' "Whimpy Dinks" held their first baseball practice last Monday, July 25, at the Grovewood.-E. 176th St. playground. Although the entire lineup was not present, the team showed a snap and zip that is found only in championship squads. In the practice game that was played, they almost edged out the Rackar's Blue Flash team in an 11-inning game, losing by a score of 10 to 9. 0. Zimmerman and Valetich twirled for the Whimpies, with "Prexy" Perat catching. "Pop-eye" Modic was the sensation of the game, rapping out three hits in five trips to the plate, in addition to playing a stellar game at the keystone sack. Other members of the squad include Kochman, Muzic, Jan-char, M. Mihelcic, A. Mihelcic, Somrack, Aspinwall, Hanna and Jarm. Manager Frank Oblak, after this practice session, confidently predicted easy wins over the Eastern Stars and the Clairwoods. The Whimpies are scheduled to play the Stars at the Grove-wood-E. 176th St. playground diamond No. 1, this Friday, MINUTES OF THE S. D. Z. SUPREME BOARD MEETING By JOE A. Reading of the minutes of the previous meeting. Minutes accepted as read. The secretary's business is now in order. Mr. Kogoj reads a communication from Slovan Lodge, No. 3, asking that pas-siveness be extended to one year. After some debate it is decided that the board answer the lodge in thiswise: The supreme board is powex-less to act on this matter, but the lodge itself, if it so desires, may proceed with initiative and referendum. A question is raised on the arrangements made to make loans to passive members. Several members misunderstood previous 1 e g i 1 a t i o n on this matter, thinking that such members would be excused from paying past due assessments, and that all loans were to be applied on assessments from date of issuance of such loans. Okorn and Jaksic explain that previous legislation on this matter explicitly states that all such loans must first be applied on past due assessments and the balance on the future assessments. Kushlan states that under the by-laws of the SDZ, all passive members must first pay past due assessments before they can be reinstated in their respective lodge Therefore all loans made to members must be applied on past due assessments and the balance on future as-essments. France Presere'n Lodge, No. 17 asks that supreme board explain the forms used in making application for loans. Messrs. Knaus and Jaksic are appointed to appear before this lodge to explain this matter. Lodges No. 21 and No. 46 ask for the rate of interest on assessement loans. Interest rate on these loans will be the same as on mortgage loans, namely 5 Robbery insurance on the group plan is presented before the board. Motion made and carried that this plan be laid before the lodges. In the event of acceptance the SDZ will pay one-half of the premium. Lodges wishing to enter this agreement must make their intentions known to the supreme secretary. Several SDZ lodges ask that they be permitted to store their assessment collections in the SDZ strongbox on the night of the 25th of each month. The board recommends that this matter be taken up with the directors of the North American Bank. Should nothing be done there, the board will reconsider this matter at the next meeting. The following death claim? are approved: Leopold Lah $500, beneficiary, wife. Mary Peterlin, $1,000, beneficiary, husband. John Erzen, $1,000, beneficiary, wife and children. Kushlan's report on John Skraba accepted as given. Under the by-laws, he is not entitled to any benefits. The president gives his report on the Old Age Pension meeting. Accepted. Moved and carried that strong wire screens be provided for the SDZ office basement windows. Approved telegram of greetings to be sent to the convention of the JSKJ. The day's business being ended, the president adjourn the meeting at 10:45 p. m. MANIFEST MUCH ENTHUSIASM IN S. D. Z. OLYMPICS Although more than a month of the SDZ Olympics are creating a great deal of interest in and around Cleveland. From all appearances the sport-mind-ed youth of the neighborhood is intent upon showing the world at large that the Slovenians are also capable of producing Joey Rays and Charley Paddocks. MODERN CRUSADERS SPLIT ENTRIES IN TWO BIG DIVISIONS The Moderns Crusaders have now split up their pinochle entries into two divisions, the highest scores in the preliminary rounds being placed in the first division and the remainder in the second. This method will afford the less experienced players an opportunity to amass a qualifying score. The members of the first division are: Joe Bradač, Ed- (More SDZ News Page 4) ward Milner, Mary Mihelcic. Anton Mihelcic, John Janchar, Ignatius Milner, Joe Muzic and Frank Modic. This group will play their first qualifying round at the home of Louise Kochman, 429 E. 156th St., on Monday, Aug. 1, at 8 p. m. Members of the second division include: Mary Milner. Tony Vardian, Stella Vardian, George Kochman, Mrs. Mary Mihelcic, Tony Somrack, An-tonia Schiberl, Louise Kochman, Joe Vraneza and Martin Valetich Jr. In each succeeding round so far the highest score has been pushed up about a hundred points. Due to this upward trend, the Crusaders expect to turn in some record smashing scores within the next few rounds. The goal of all participants seems to be a total of 4,000 for 16 played hands. To increase the interest and enthusiasm, a modest philanthropist has offered a prize to the first Crusaders to attain this lofty pinochle in pinochle scores. Modern Knight Flashes By SMILES Last Thursday we had perfect attendance at our regular meeting. The Modern Knights are planning to hold the first Grand Social, Sept. 7, at Re-char Ave. and E. 207th St. Cancel all other arrangements for that date, because you will regret it if you miss it. Tickets will be on sale at prices that will meet your pocket book. Our baseball club is willing to challenge the winning team of the Olympic Day at Pintar's Farm. The Modern Knights have been defeated but twice in a series of 15 games. Fay of the Modern Knights takes this opportunity to thank Mickey for sending his best regards. It was surprising to see so many Modern Knights, Eastern Stars, Comets at the Grocers' and Butchers' picnic at Mocil-nikar's farm. Local high schools are expected to contribute much of the talent. At present the writer can't think of any outstanding dash artists or field men. but the succeeding weeks are sure to produce some favorites. Besides a plethora of running and weight events the Olympic Day program will feature a tug-of-war between two teams composed of older men. This event is sure to draw a lot of interest since the men who will participate were in their own day stars in their own right. Whatever the result of the tugging, it will produce many laughs. The program for the day has been so arranged that all ages willl be given an opportunity to show their wares. There will be events for children with appropriate prizes, and the ladies will be given a chance to kick up their heels. This gala event will be staged Sept. 4 on Pintar's farm in Euclid, O. Any member of the Central Committee will be glad to give outsiders additional information. Pinochle has now claimed the interest of 11 of Clairwood members, and, according to results of their meeting Thursday, there is every indication that the Clairwoods will be very much in the running when it comes to the finals. Out of three complete games played, Charles Granek led the scoring, with Karl Kokal next, with one point difference. —-o- BEACH PARTY A SUCCESS A gala dance celebrating the anniversary of the Eastern No. 51 SDZ, held last Monday night, was a successful enterprise, due to the co-operation of the neighboring SDZ lodges. Mr. Millavec spent his last year's vacation at the same place. To Pass Anniversary Day in Ordinary Manner By ANTONI A KURENT "I am happy because now, after 25 years of labor among my people, I feci that they are with me; that they are satisfied; that they are proud of their new church." This is the message which was pre-cipitated from the lips of the Rev. B. J Ponikvar in a soft and sincere ir.cno tone as he meditated upon the approaching silver anniversary of his pastorate at St. Vitus' Church. The words are a forecast of a joyous climax to the years in the pastoral life of the little priest, which were deluged with much toil, a great deal of sorrow, and still more forgiveness. Father Ponikvar began his career at St. Vitus' on Friday, Aug. 2, 1907. At that time St. Vitus' was the largest Slovenian parish, and the nucleus of all Slovenian activity. The Rev. Vitus Hribar, the present pastor of St. Mary's Church, was the first pastor of St Vitus' Church, which was built in 1893 It is with an unexplained sigh that Father Ponikvar re.nuiisees upon the early days at St. Vitus', and he speaks at length about the • hardships which the Catholic priest endured in ministering to'his flock. He recalls his own frequent trips by street car to distant, scattered homes and hospitals He remembers the car strike of 1908, when he had to buy a bicycle in order to visit the sick. He recollects the number of times that he had to lay aside his priestly duties and represent his parishioners in court, because there were no attorneys as yet in the Slovenian community Among the societies which were organized or reorganized by Father Po-) nikvar were the Foresters, or Knights of Baraga, the St. Anthony Catholic Knights of Ohio, the Young Ladies' Sodality, the Altar Society and the Orels. In 1914 he opened the present brick school, which in 1922 was attended by 1,842 pupils. Perhaps the greatest and most laudable accomplishment by Father Ponikvar is the building of the new church. Though the plans for the new st:uc-ture were being formulated for years, the ground for the building was broken two years ago. The church, which is now nearing completion, is said to te among the finest and most beautiful of its kind. According to Father Po-nikvar's statement, it will be opened for worship in the early fall. He also adds that this religious edifice is the result of the zealous work, countless sacrifices, love and deep faith of his parishioners for the past quarter of a century. Father Ponikvar, the son of Margaret and Lawrence Ponikvar, was born in Bloke, Slovenia, Aug. 21, 1877. He was one of 12 children, of which five brothers and four sisters are still living. The one brother is the Rev. James Ponikvar of the Lazarist Order iti Ljubljana, and his one sister, Sister Mary Olga, a Lazarist Charity nun, pharmacist and teacher, is at present in Argentina, South America. Another sister, Sister Mary Genevieve, of the same order, died in 1918. A brother, Anton, is in Cleveland, and his sister, Anna, who kept house for him here, died in 1923. The remaining family is in Jugoslavia. Bloke was the early scene of Father Ponikvar's education. Later he studied in the "gymnasium" in Ljubljana, and in 1901 the late Father Francis X. Ba-jec took him with a group of students t• America to prepare for the ministry, here. After six years of study at the seminary in St. Paul, Minn., Father Ponikvar was ordained June 12, 1906, and he said n;s first mass in St. Lawrence's CluirUi, Cleveland, June 24 Appointments to SS. Cyril and Methodius churches in Syracuse, N. Y., and Lorain, O., and a short pastorate in Bing-hamton, N. Y., followed. On Aug. 2, 1907, he,came to St. Vitus', where he has labored ever since, arduously and fearlessly in the vineyard of his vocation. Father Ponikvar expects to pass his anniversary dr.y rt«.\t Tuesday in his usual manner. Upon the altar at mass, in the little, shabby, frame church, he will beg for courage and strength, in leading his flock. New Program Is Being- Arranged by Mr. Martin for Near Future Approximately 2,000 spectators surged into the grounds at the east end of thf St. Clair Bathhouse last Monday evening to view the elaborate program of entertainment prepared for them by Mr. Heinie Martin, superintendent of the bathhouse. The cream of all the local singers, dancers, musicians, etc.. were recruited to make up the card All the performers worked gratis. It is difficult to say which performei or performers "copped" the show, but judging from the applause of the appreciative audience, little Joe Makse, 7-year-old crooner, walked off with the honors. His songs and chatter kept the throng in a constant uproar. You could hear a pin drop when those two Slovenian songbirds ,the Koporc sisters, Olga and Victoria, stepped out and manufactured some ciose harmony that would do justice to the Bcs-well sisters. From all appearances, the crowd went for them in a big -vay. Andy Stupeck and his octet, known as the Poolballers, came in for a goodly share of the applause. Their version of "Way Down Home" and "Dixie" held the crowd spellbound. The octet is composed of Andy Stupeck, conductor, Stan Kromar, Stogie Shock, Lefty Strniša, Joe Milavec, Eddie Sei-fert, Harold Evans and "Rocky" Kasieh Speaking of singers, these two Tur-koviches don't take a back seat for anyone. Their offering of Slovenian song? was accepted with much enthusiasm bv the older folks in the audience. The accordion players were kept busy. Tony Trinko, Frank Zigman. Louis Trebar and Petek chased the blues away with their "hot" renditions of popular and Slovenian music. Five tap dancers were on the bill, offering up some jileasiflg Hoofing Betty Burdelich, Florence Prince, Frances Prijatel, Sally Svetek and Helen ' Matko performed? George Kuka (Cook) and Frank Cu-lovic did everything to their banjoes but make them talk. Red Brancelj's Rhythm Rioters had many a heart fluttering and toe a-tapping. Last but not least was Frank Zigman and his orchestra. Their torrid rendition of the "Tiger Rag" sent the audience homeward in the gayest of moods. The amplifying system used was loaned and installed for the performance by the Bruss Radio Co. At present Mr. Martin is working on a new program, which he will present in a week or two. Anyone wishing to appear in the forthcoming production may see him at the St. Clair Bathhouse. A group of Slovenian lads, all hailing from Niles, O., compose the Softball team which is one of the winning teams of the town. They are holding second place in the Fun and Fumble League of Niles. Although there is not a great number of Slovenian families in Niles, some of the boys have other interests, and others arc fortunate enough to have employment which again calls them away, there are just enough to make up the team. The team was organized last year in July by Rudy Leskovec and Fred Prinz as a feature at one of the picnics held by the SNPJ and SSPZ jointly. It was not as successful then, because it organized too late in the season. , This year these boys have played 31 games and have suffered only fc-ur defeats. The members of the team are as follows: Mike Weida, c; John Kosance, lb and p; Fred Predika, 2b; Alec Loash. lb; Ed Scarnecchia, 3b; Rudy Leskovec, p; Jack Predika, cf; John Jerina, If; Fred Prinz, rf; Steve Valuschak, rs, captain; Mike Mollis, ss, manager. The only teams to defeat the Slovenians were the Mineral Ridge, Caranc Undertakers (the team holding first place in the Fun and Fumble League), W. B. Missions of Warren, O., and the Isaly Dairy team of Niles. The team sponsored a dance on the 18th of June, which was well attended and yielded the boys a very nice profit, which is going to go toward buying baseball outfits.
