Ob neki drugi ozdravitvi go-bavca evangelist postavi na prizorišce takojšnjo osvoboditev: Jezus stegne roko in z ukazom (»Da, hocem, bodi ozdravljen«) nadomesti pokvarjeno bolnikovo meso s cistim, prvotnim mesom. 5) 390 | VESTNIK 2022 392 | VESTNIK 2022 394 | VESTNIK 2022 396 | VESTNIK 2022 398 | VESTNIK 2022 400 | VESTNIK 2022 28TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME Response: The Lord has revealed his victory in the sight of the nations. First Reading 2 Kings 5:14-17 Cured of leprosy in the River Jordan, Naaman takes some soil of Israel home with him so that he can worship in his own land the God of Israel. Second Reading 2 Timothy 2:8-13 Paul may be in chains but that will nev-er be the fate of the word of God. Gospel Luke 17:11-19 Of ten lepers cured by Jesus, only one returns to give thanks: Jesus praises his faith. “Your faith has saved you.” Illustration Towards the end of World War II, a Polish-American Jesuit, Father Walter Ciszek, was accused by the Russians of being a Vatican spy. He was imprisoned for eighteen years, the first five in Moscow's infamous Lubyanka prison and then in the notorious slave labour camps of Siberia. For some years no one, ex-cept his captors, knew whether he was alive or dead. When finally he was released, everyone was eager to know how he had managed to survive such ordeals. They asked him for his secret. What had kept him going? What had saved him from being driven mad by so much suffering, so much loneliness? His answer was always the same: it was faith that had enabled him to survive. He ad-mitted that this answer didn’t satisfy every-body. To those who thought it too facile, too simplistic, he responded that he could do nothing other than repeat clearly and honest-ly what he had slowly learned after a great deal of anguish and a lot of prayerful reflec-tion. The simple truths of the faith had sus-tained him through years of doubt and dark-ness and suffering. But then he would add that so often the astonishing thing about divine truth is its simplicity – the Ten Com-mandments, for example, or the Beatitudes or the first answer many people learned in the Catechism: that we are made to know and love God in this world, and be happy with God for ever in the next. Gospel Teaching Of course, faith is something much more than simply subscribing to a list of truths that we have to believe. It is at its best a relation-ship, a relationship of love and trust that can transform life, a relationship that inevitably gives rise to other virtues. It gives rise to praise. Take Naaman the army commander, who appeared in today's first reading. He was amazed at his miraculous cleansing from lep- rosy. Following the prophet Elisha’s advice, he had plunged into the River Jordan and on emerging found that he was cured. Now, standing in front of the prophet, he makes his act of faith: “there is no God in all the earth”, he says, “except in Israel”. And he adds a strange request – that he may take home from Israel “as much earth as two mules may carry”. The lovely idea behind that request is that he wants enough soil from the land of his cure to be able to create his own little Israel, so to say, in his native land; and there he will always praise the Lord of Israel, the God who had healed him. If faith leads to praise, we need go no further than to-day’s Gospel to learn that faith also leads to gratitude. As he travels towards Jerusalem, Jesus is suddenly confronted by ten lepers – in his day, lepers were outcasts and so would often gather in small groups for mutual support. Keeping their distance, they cry out: “Jesus! Master! Take pity on us.” He tells them to report to the priests and on the way they suddenly realise that their leprosy has gone. Nine of them are so delighted that they continue on their way rejoicing – perhaps to celebrate at the nearest hostelry. Only one, and he is a Samaritan, a foreigner in the eyes of law-abiding Jews – only he returns to give personal thanks to Jesus. And he leaves his benefactor with these words echoing in his heart: “Go on your way. Your faith has saved you.” Application In one of his letters, St Paul declares, “what matters is faith that makes its power felt through love”. As we have seen, faith expresses itself in many ways – not only in love, but also in praise, in gratitude, and, as we heard in Father Ciszek’s case, in unbelievable courage and fortitude. Perhaps we underestimate the power of faith in our lives; maybe we fail to see that faith is a relationship between God and our-selves, and that, like any other relationship, it can grow stronger if that’s what we desire. One of the loveliest and wisest prayers in the Gospels is that of a distraught father who comes to Jesus begging him to cure his son who is gravely ill. Jesus explains that every-thing is possible to one who believes, and the man cries out his prayer: “I do have faith. Help the little faith I have!” Per-haps that’s a prayer that we too might pray: “Lord, we do believe, but help the little faith we have.” 2022 Slovenian Canadian Scholarship Foundation Awards Application Now Available The Slovenian Canadi-an Scholarship Founda-tion was created to pro-vide students of Sloveni-an-Canadian descent, residing within the Hal-ton, Hamilton-Wentworth, and Niagara re-gions, the opportunity to be recognized for their academic achievements, community in-volvement, and appreciation of their Sloveni-an heritage. Z njihovim pestrim izborom pesmi so znova navdušili poslušalce. Kitarist Erazem Grafenau-er in pianist Jure Gorucan pa sta popestrila kulturni progam vecera. Na koncu tega jubilejnega vecera sta obe predstavnice is Slovenije: Urška Pipan in Mihe-la Jagodic v njunem nagovoru izrazile pohvalo in priznanja posameznim pevkam in se zlasti zborovodkinji Mariji Ahacic Pollak. Predale so ji prestižno priznanje - Gallusov kipec. Frank Novak 30 let Vokalne skupine Plamen PRAISE VS. PRIDE By Fr. Steve Ryan, SDB I’m always trying hard to give a decent homi-ly, preach a solid retreat talk, write an inspiring article or give the right advice in a tricky situa-tion. I try. Really, I know in my heart that I’m striv-ing to do a good job as a Salesian priest. Wheth-er I hear any affirmation or not from others, from students, parents or my religious superiors, I fig-ure that my enthusiasm and work ethic are mak-ing a difference. Right now, under some pretty challenging circumstances, I feel that my efforts are making a difference. But… there is a danger in all of this. The problem with all I’ve just said is that there is too much “I” in all of it! How can I stop being so self-referential in my discipleship -ministry? How can I “let go and let God”? When am I going to stop doubling down on my efforts to work harder for Him, and in turn, let Him work? How can I make it more about being an instrument for God to use me in whatever way He wants, instead of me proving that I love Him by “performing” well? Pride is mixed up in all of this. Let’s turn to Scripture to see if we can figure this out. Psalm 33:13-22 states: The Lord looks down from heaven; he sees all the children of man; from where he sits enthroned, he looks out on all the inhabitants of the earth, he who fashions the hearts of them all and observes all their deeds. A king is not saved by his great army; a warri-or is not delivered by his great strength. The war horse is a false hope for salvation, and by its great might it cannot rescue. Behold, the eye of the Lord is on those who fear him, on those who hope in his steadfast love, that he may deliver their soul from death and keep them alive in famine. Our soul waits for the Lord; he is our help and our shield. For our heart is glad in him, because we trust in his holy name. Let your steadfast love, O Lord, be upon us, as we hope in you. Interpretation: Psalm 33 is reminding us that even the best-equipped and most dedicated army cannot save the king. Nor are individuals of great strength enough to pull off a victory. The battle will not be won simply because we have some great war-riors. We shouldn’t simply count on strong war-horses to give us success. Scripture says that de-spite their power they cannot save. Instead, the Lord watches over those who fear him, those who rely on His unfailing love. He rescues them from death and keeps them alive in times of hardships. We must put our hope in the Lord. He is our help and our shield. In Him our hearts really re-joice. For if we trust in His holy name, then loving power will surround us. Our hope must be in Him alone. Our acquired skills in ministry, relationships, parenting, management and preparation are enticing to us. We are sorely tempted to depend upon our own ability to rise to the occasion, ra-ther than throw ourselves on the mercy of God and beg for His strength, His courage and His power. In order to fix our “pride problem”, we must constantly remind ourselves of our need for de-pendence on God. We need to seriously praise God more – at all times and in all circumstances. Addressing God as Almighty, Omnipotent, Great, Most Honorable, Our All-Loving and All-Merciful Lord from whom all blessings flow – is a way of curbing our pride. Adoring the Lord God in the Eucharist with-out saying a word about ourselves is a great way to practice humility. Praying more, instead of preparing every detail of a program or a project, will do more good than vice-versa. I wonder if I can somehow actually stop thinking of myself as God’s warhorse? I wonder if I can train my focus by praising Him so that I will give less attention to my deeds and more atten-tion to His power? I have to flip my mind and heart toward a posture of desperate dependence. Praise over-comes pride. SLOVENSKA ŠOLA September is here and the school doors are open for another year. This means that it will also be time for SLOVENIAN SCHOOL. If you have a child in Kindergarten or older in elementary school, he/she is eligible to enroll in Slovenian School. Be proud of your culture and heritage! As descendants of our small Slove-nian nation, let's make it possible for our children to become acquainted with their ancestral homeland and learn Slovenian. One day they will thank you for having the foresight and the interest in sending them to Slovenian school. We all feel the need to offer our children extra-curricular activities in sports, music, dance, etc. Don't you think that it is just as important to offer them the opportunity to broaden their intellect by learning the language of their parent or grandparents? We urge you to think about it and send your children to SLOVENIAN SCHOOL! Our programs are easily comprehended and geared towards the ability of the children. They are made along the lines of the ones we use in English schools so that they can be easily fol-lowed and understood. We offered our existing Sola families an online survey to determine the best day to hold classes and the overwhelming choice was to keep it on Saturdays. So, starting September 24, classes will be held on Saturdays from 9am to 12:30pm. A registration link will be provided to existing Sola families.
