Bush first met with Kučan and Drnovšek, and deflected questions about the U.S.-Russian summit. “Right now, I’m working on renewing my acquaintance with the prime minister,” Bush said, noting that he met Drnovšek in Texas while he was governor. Slovenia’s prime minister Janez Drnovšek said that since the U.S. “will obviously not give up its missile-defense project, “the best thing that can be done now is to coordinate these efforts with Europe and Russia, so there will be no new arms race and no new tensions. -It would be best if we would all disarm. The aim is to reduce the number of anns in the world,” he said, adding that since that is unlikely, “an agreement is needed.” “I reckon that the (missile defense) concept will go ahead, so it is much better if it goes ahead jointly than unilaterally,” Dmovsek said. The Slovenian prime minister told the two presidents that Macedonia would not be able to stop the war on its own and that “international political action” is needed. “If Macedonia is left alone, the conflict would deteriorate further. And at the end, international intervention would become necessary,” he said. Congratulations to Stan, a remarkable fellow! 10 Years of Slovenian Independence Last Saturday, June 16, US President George W. Bush and the President of the Russian Federation, Vladimir Putin, met in Slovenia to discuss a number of issues important to the future of the entire world. This event marked Slovenia’s success in becoming a peaceful and democratic member of the family of nations. Ten years ago, as Slovenia declared its independence, a future that included such a significant meeting hardly seemed possible. The Slovenian American Heritage Foundation (SAHF) invites all to attend the fourth talk in our 2001 lecture series which will commemorate 10 years of Slovenia’s Independence with a special video presentation, panel discussion and celebration. The event, which is free and open to the public, will take place on Monday, June 25 at 7 p.m. in the Lower Hall of the Slovenian Society Home, 20713 Recher Avenue in Euclid. A wine, cheese and strudel social will follow the lecture. At the June 25,h presentation, the SAHF will show a video highlighting some of the significant happenings surrounding the declaration of independence and subsequent war. The evening will also include a round table discussion with individuals who were in Slovenia 10 years ago. Dr. Vladimir Rus, Dr. Rudolph M. Slovenia has been in the news with uncommon frequency this past week and I deem it a delight to add to the excitement. Congratulations to Slovenia who superbly hosted the meeting between East and West. U.S. President George W. Bush and Russian President Vladimir Putin converged on Slovenian soil for their first meeting, for three hours, on Saturday, June 16. Slovenia pulled off the immense responsibility as the center of the world’s focus, without a hitch. Heretofore the news media often referred to Slovenia as a “Tiny Alpine Country.” Slovenia may be small in size and population, but they mustered their resources for a colossal and stalwart job. Their hospitality and responsibility must forever remain a positive factor in the eyes of society which was focused on this important rendezvous. Congratulations on a job well done. A few weeks ago we wrote about watching the Rick Steves travel show on Public Television when he featured Slovenia and Croatia. He concentrated his attention on the natural beauty of the countries and the friendliness of the population. We said we purchased a video tape of the program. A number of people called and asked where they can also obtain a copy of the video. Call 1-425-771-8303 and ask for the Bulgaria, Eastern Turkey, Slovenia and Croatia video. All four countries are on one tape which costs SI9.95 plus shipping and handling, which in our case came to around S3.00. It’s a very positive adventure into our mother country and may be of special interest to those who have never been there, or are planning to visit, or may just enjoy reminiscing about a country whose people love Americans! Travels in Europe With Rick Steves is the most popular travel shows in America. Slovenia remains in the spotlight as it observes its 10th anniversary of independence which was declared on June 25, 1991. We at the American Home newspaper remember that time most vividly when the people in America, Canada and other countries put aside their political differences and banded together to support Slovenia’s drive for recognition throughout the free world. It was when we did not forget our Slovenian heritage and at the same time strengthen our American citizenship. But as the former Principal of St. Joseph High School, Father Weisner often Polka Time and Father’s Day by RUDY FLIS What a great Father’s Day followed our beautiful Polka Mass on Saturday, June 16 at Corpus Christi Parish in Cleveland. The events of both days were mirrored in each day’s weather, perfect. Fr. George Balasko (the Polka Priest) celebrated Mass as the “T-L” Band gave us the notes to praise our Lord as we sang to the memorable melodies of our heritage. It was a most uplifting hour for each and every one of us present. My mother-in-law has a cousin, also bom in Ireland. She is in her eighties. She has been a Franciscan Nun for at least 60 years, and her name is Sister Francois; and yes, she was at our Polka Mass and she did swing and sway through her first Polka Mass. A great piece of luck for Sister Francois, who is here visiting her cousins. Fr. George gave us a phone call last week and asked Therese for the recipe for her pineapple squares. Therese told Fr. George, “It’s been published.” Then he mentioned to me, “I’d eat the edges and comers if I could.” So, at the festivities after Mass, Therese made sure Fr. George got his wish as she presented him with edges and comers left over from the pineapple squares she baked for Father’s Day. Of course I wasn’t able to eat “edges and comers,” because they were for Fr. George. In the center of the tray for Fr. George was a delicious, juicy piece of pineapple square from somewhere in the center of the pan. The last time I saw Fr. George and the edges and comers with the juicy pineapple square, he was on the bus heading back to East Liverpool, Ohio with all his friends. Father, I don’t know how you and your edges and corners did, but me and the pineapple squares were just fine. And oh, yes, we had the delicacies even though “nobody died.” Celebrate Slovenia’s 10-Year Independence with culture at Slovenska Pristava said, “All good things must come to an end.” For a time East met West, as the saying goes, but for the most part, local Slovenian factions eventually once again continued on their separate ways. To the people of Slovenia, we extend our sincerest best wishes on your 10th anniversary and our hearts are with you during this time of great joy. The boys put on their trousers and shirts backwards, and the girls did the same. The rest of the students spotted us a mile away for when they seen us wearing our clothes backwards, they knew we were the chosen ones, and about to graduate. In the months of May and December, it was always the big school proms to go to. The 11Ih graders could attend the Senior Prom if they were asked by someone who was graduating that year. I went to my share of proms and I might say that it was a costly event. First and foremost there were the tickets to purchase for the dance and the guys had to get a corsage for his date, and on top of that, we had to go to Bill Swartz on W. 117lh and Lorain to rent a tuxedo, better known then as a monkey suit. That ran $7.50. It seemed a lot just to rent the suit, but very cheap to what it cost today, especially when I think back when I got married over 20 some years ago, I paid $45.00 to rent a light blue tuxedo. I tried to tell the salesman that I only wanted to rent it, not buy it. Unfortunately back in those high school days I was asked to attend proms with a lot of girls who were going to all-girl high schools, for they had no boys there whom they could ask. So the girls had to turn to their old flames from grade school. Now you know why I had to cut so many lawns just to pay for flowers. Well, it is way past my bed check hour and time I close only to continue in the next edition. In closing, may the Good Lord bless and watch over all of you. Paul J. Soup, meat, vegetables and salad were the standard fare. Potatoes always led the vegetable group. They were boiled and quartered for frying in homemade lard with a dollop of ocvirki (cracklings), crisp brown remains of the rendered lard. These little ‘crisps’ made dramatic improvements to our cooking and Slovenian kids ate their ‘veggies’ with no complaints. The soup was usually started with a beef stock made from shank meat with marrow and knuckle bones. Lots of parsley, celery, onions and carrots were added, and after their flavor had been cooked out, the stock was skimmed and strained to a clear amber-pink broth. The strained vegetables were cut up and browned with the other supper vegetables. Homemade noodles, thin and wispy, or little square-cut ‘bleke' were cooked and rinsed separately so as not to cloud the soup when they were added. The same was true of the ‘baby’ barley, rice, or ‘kasha, ’ which are little crumbles made by rubbing noodle dough across a coarse cheese-grater over boiling water. For a ‘busy-day quick soup-filler,’ raw eggs were whisked into boiling broth. I was one of the four male members of our extended family of five. My mother was chief cook, bottle-washer, et all, and she always heard a running commentary about the food while we ate. Compliments far outnumbered criticism, but some mention was always forthcoming. ‘Lojo, ’ was our term for beef soup that was a bit ‘off,’ and yellow suet left untrimmed was usually the culprit. Mom would have been disappointed if her cooking was not discussed or critiqued; silence would not be a compliment. In our own way we were acknowledging her efforts and showing our appreciation for the important work she was doing. Though it may seem hard to believe today, she enjoyed the attention to her cooking and considered our dinner conversation as honest and constructive commentary. The worst criticism would be to ask for the vinegar. A teaspoon in the soup bowl along with generous peppering, would mask a strong ‘suety’ taste. Most of the flavor was boiled out of the cheap cut of beef during cooking, but ocvirki came to the rescue of the stringy remains. The What did Tennessee? As the ‘baby’ of the family, marrow from the soup bones was mine, and such privileges have made my cardiologist more wealthy. We all forked our salad from a large, white ironstone bowl in the center of the table, and always thought of it as something to help moisten the rest of the meal for easier eating - it was never a first course. ‘Solata,' is Slovenian for lettuce or salad. Our bowl of salad consisted of lettuce, period. No medley of vegetables or shaved carrots; and tomatoes or croutons need not apply. Lots of garlic was rubbed in the bowl, but other than our dressing of “Angela Mia” oil and vinegar, only, salt and pepper were added to the greens. From early April through most of the summer, we had baby lettuce from our garden; “Black-Seeded Simpson,” “Ruby Leaf,” and the occasional early spring treats of young dandelion or chicory greens growing wild in the grass. In the fall we enjoyed our endives, and before the first freeze they were buried in the garden to bleach for the winter months. Rarely did we have to buy ‘iceberg,’ considered a poor excuse for solata and used only as a last resort. Our Slovenian suppers may have been a little short on variety, but predictability also has its virtues. Supper was the focal point of each day and not to be missed. You could predict with virtual certainty that there would be the full family of five seated at table - every day.__________________________ Glinšek “Grew up Slovenian in Collinwood, and now lives in Sarasota, Fla. (June 15) - Exasperated drivers piled up at checkpoints into Slovenia on Friday, as an augmented police and border force sought to ensure nothing goes awry for the first meeting between U.S. President George Bush and Russian President Vladimir Putin. The security measures thwarted protest plans by environmental and human rights groups, who called them excessive and contrary to Slovenia’s self-image as the most peaceful, democratic state to emerge from the former Yugoslavia. The Saturday summit at a castle outside the capital Ljubljana is as crucial for Slovenia - perhaps more so - as for Washington and Moscow. The country of 2 million is seeking membership in the European Union and NATO, and eager for this brief moment in the world’s spotlight. And Slovenian leaders are keen to avoid the protests that dogged Bush during earlier stops in his European tour. Slovenian President Milan Kučan told reporters Friday that the summit, coming days before the 10 anniversary of the country s independence from Yugosl3' via, was “a great recogniti°n for Slovenia and proof that t is a very stable state.” All week, border guards have been running computer checks on everyone entering the country. Yours truly enjoyed a fabulous trip out West for most of May and thus missed that month’s Holmes Avenue Pensioners meeting. However, former HAP reporter Marge Saletel took notes and thanks to her efforts, I will begin this report with a brief resume of May’s get-together. MAY - The 172 members who attended the meeting on an exceptionally beautiful May afternoon, offered up silent prayers to the memory of deceased members Ed Kocin and Peggy Lipovec. (This month we observed the passing of Lucy Kolodosky and Ann Pluscusky.) This part of our meeting is always the most difficult since we recognize the loss which their passing represents to us all. Our condolences are extended to the family and friends of Ed, peggy, Lucy and Ann. On a happier note, the members enthusiastically Welcomed back Dom Cekada, who seemed very happy to be back, and Mary Žnidaršič, both of whom had been hospitalized, but appeared to have weathered the medical problems well. Both are wished continued good health. Also welcomed by everyone were Eleanor Pavšek, Vi Pupina and Josephine Souchik, the latest additions to the HAP membership roster. We’re certainly happy ^ have them as part of our Pensioner family. The April Dinner-Dance Scored a win once again and ^att Zabukovec and John Pozlevchar thanked every-°ne who attended as well as everyone who assisted in Setting up and cleaning up. Bless all the hard-workers whose seemingly mundane tasks truly make an event run smoothly and successfully. Darlene Zele, May’s guest speaker, effectively and convincingly, spoke on a subject of which she had personal experience - stolen identity. In her case, her identity was stolen through hospital records. The theft not only took five years to solve, but it proved to be a terrible ordeal, involving debts of over $2 million, the intervention of local police as well as the Secret Service, and even giving testimony in Washington, D.C. Darlene couldn’t stress enough the seriousness of giving out one’s Social Security number, particularly over the phone, and encouraged everyone to remove it from their driver’s license. Since nearly 600,000 people are victims of these scams each year, Darlene provided members with a comprehensive sheet of “do’s and don’ts” in order to be protected from such thieves. The membership owes Darlene a debt of gratitude for sharing her experience with us and making us aware of the existence and consequences of this terrible scam. JUNE - President John Kozlevchar and Matt Zabukovec began June’s meeting by presenting guest speaker Cleveland Councilman and Council President, Mike Polenšek, to the HAP participants. Mike spoke on matters of local interest such as the present efforts to redistrict the Cleveland area - a task which is performed every 10 years after the Census results become available. Whereas Cleveland as a whole lost 28,000 people, Ward 11, which includes the Holmes Hall, had the highest increase in population. However, through the required redistricting, almost 2,000 people from Ward 11 were moved to Ward 10 to keep all wards even. Part of that loss includes the area around and including Collinwood High School. Mike also spoke of the findings of a “Needs Assessment” survey that the Cleveland Council had distributed. Results showed that nearly 80% of the respondents feel that “City Hall” spends too much time and money on “downtown” and not enough on the neighborhoods. They accorded “waste collection” with the #1 service rating while “schools” rated lowest. Mike hopes the Council will take the findings to heart and “put the money where the people are.” It was great to have our Councilman with us once again, for he seems to sincerely enjoy our company and respects our contributions and commitment, not only to the area he oversees, but to his many successful Council campaigns over 24 years. We, in turn, sincerely enjoy his visits with us and hope he will return again in the not too distant future. Matt then turned our attention to summer fun and our annual picnic, scheduled for next month, on July 11th. As always, donations of bakery items are welcome as are volunteers to assist with a variety of activities, but most especially with set-up and parking. Sign-up sheets were provided for these and other jobs. If anyone failed to sign up, give Matt a call and he’ll gladly add you to the list. It may sound trite, but it’s true - many hands DO make light work! Help support our organization. Because Fairport Harbor pensioners always adjourn their July meeting early so they can attend our picnic, our Board decided that on Aug. 8th, we would reciprocate. We’ll have no guest speaker at that meeting and will, instead, finish earlier and have the chance to take part in their picnic. One can never have too many summer outings. Speaking of which, don’t forget the Federation picnic at SNPJ Farm on Aug. 15th. Cost for dinner and dancing is $ 11. See Matt for tickets. After the police hour three German guards departed from the Dobrunjski check point, the two Homeguardsmen removed the road obstacles so that we could continue on our way to Sostro. At the Church of Saint Lenart I delivered the jumpers to the Chetnik patrol Epilogue As I already mentioned in the beginning, in Zalog and vicinity the conviction slowly prevailed which the KP supported that the field Homeguard on 19. November 1944 had killed flier Brash somewhere below the Kašelj Hill. This conviction also became acceptable years later for the KP fCommunist Party) and thus also for the daily, Ljudska prava (The Pe '.?’s Rights). On, 19. June 1958 it published an article with the claim that Franc Stele, residing in the United States, had killed the American parachuter. Thus many Slovenians found out about this assertion. Five days later 6.24., the Belgrade Borba (Struggle) also published the article. On 21. July the Slovenian daily, Prosveta, (Enlightenment), which at that time was being published in Cleveland, published the article with the same claim. That same year, 24. November 1958 the American newspaper, The Denver Post, published an article that a Homeguard officer of Zalog had killed an American pilot after he had to jump from his plane. The writer was referring to a report which he received from the Communists in Slovenia and especially in Zalog. (The articles ftom the mentioned newspapers were provided to me by Dr. Matej Roesmann of Cleveland. As Doctor Juris and native of Polje he cut out these articles, since he recognized their historical value and preserved them. For this service I am grateful to him.) In defense of his honor and reputation for himself and his family Franc Stele was forced to sue Prosveta (Enlightenment). He could not and even was not allowed to pass by so unjust and fabricated an accusation. He won the case as was already to be expected in advance, for after all pilot Maurice Brash was alive after the war and returned healthy back home to the United States. The court decided that Prosveta must retract its assertion regarding Stele’s killing of the parachute jumper, at the same time it was adjudged to pay for damages. The Denver Post, too, had to publish a retraction. In 1947 Maurice Brash now an air captain in the reserves, sent a notarized declaration-affidavit to twelve people in the Spittal camp as an acknowledgement, that these political refugees did something for the Western Allies against the Communist regime. He wrote a separate letter to the Hirschegger brothers and took an interest in their situation and need. (Franc Ižanc: Odprti grobovi (Open Graves), Buenos Aires, 1971, p 38.) Fifteen years ago I tried to come in contact with M. Brash twice. I turned to two military institutions to get his address but without success. A Slovenian living in Washington also tried to get his address at the War Secretariate but they did not give it. Eight years ago, 9.26.1992 the daily, Slovenec, published my shortened article, “We Were Saving Allied Pilots”. The main part of the article was intended for Brash. In the last part I describe how Joze Melaher-Zmagoslav (Triumphant), leader of the Chetniks in the Slovenske Gorice, helped Allied parachutists, who were taking refuge with him from the eastern countries. He sent them to Italy. (In the article I wrote erroneously that the Germans had come to Stele the first evening already, that is 19. November. And he had been at Suhadolc’s two weeks and not a month. He had jumped out of the plane east of the Šentjakob Bridge.) As is generally known the Germans in January 1945 captured fifteen Allied parachutists at Selo near Lipoglav (Zaveza 24, p.32). Among them was also pilot Maurice Brash. During the hearing in Ljubljana he did not give away the names of physicians who had treated him. As it looks he was unable to deny that he was being treated in Leonišce. Since the Germans knew that S. AJcvina was the head of the sanatorium they jailed her probably towards the end of February or in the beginning of March, probably too because she often gave refuge to members of the underground, as well as to me. The Sisters of Charity at the time requested respected former patients that they demand the release of this marvelous Sister. I do not know anymore how many days she was incarcerated, probably ten. In the end the Germans decided: “Because of one woman we shall not have all of Ljubljana against us!” and released her. After the war S. Akvina immediately left for Belgrade but the Communists craftily uncovered her and arrested her in 1946. Taken from Zaveza (Ljubljana) Dec. 2000, p. 39. No. 25 June 21, 2001 MARKO KREMŽAR Buenos Aires, Arg. Vsak zbor nam je prinesel nekaj lepega, nekaj svojskega in nas s svojim nastopom obogatil. Ob slovenski pesmi smo občutili posebno povezanost, saj nas je vse družila ljubezen do te naše dediščine. Zopet je pred nami kulturni praznik. Obiskal nas bo Mendoški oktet z ansamblom Los Chanares. Rešnjega Telesa in Krvi. ' 14. Blagor tistemu, ki odstranjuje trnje z moje poti proti večnosti. Vidu 1. 1993) mo. Hvala Vam, g. Take trditve so, milo rečeno, popolna izmišljotina. To njeno krivdo in odgovornost še poveča. Vprašanje je, kako naj do nje pridemo, dokler velik del rojakov vztrajno tišči glavo v pesek in skuša vse preteklo gorje naprtiti svetovni vojni. Vrhunska bilaterala Ljubljana (Delo fax, 18. junija 2001) - Štirje ločeni, dvajsetminutni dvostranski pogovori predsednika države Milana Kučana in premiera Janeza Drnovška z ameriškim in ruskim predsednikom Georgeom Bushem in Vladimirjem Putinom so bili za slovenska sogostitelja vrhunec sobotnega vrha. Ob 2. uri popoldne bo kulturni program, glavni govornik bo BERNARD SADOVNIK, predsednik Narodnega sveta koroških Slovencev (NSKS), s temo: “Slovensko zamejstvo in Slovenci po svetu” Sledi zabava. Igra orkester Murski Val. čete domobrancev skupaj s še enim domobrancem pri Križu nad Zdensko vasjo presenetil in razorožil partizana Janeza Ambrožiča in Alojza Marolta. O. C. Vinko Levstik obsojen zaradi vojnih hudodelstev bo me več v Sloveniji Po sodni obsodbi Vinka Levstika Komentar Vrnitev v leto 1948 IVO ŽAJDELA - Ljubljana Gorica (Nedelo fax, 17. junija 2001) - Obsodba Vinka Levstika zaradi vojnih hudodelstev na okrožnem sodišču v Ljubljani zelo odmeva v obmejnih poslovnih krogih in sredstvih javnega obveščanja. Zdaj bo moral nekdo dokazno gradivo vzeti pod drobnogled in ga analizirati. Zagotovo bo izšla o tem gradivu knjiga, v kateri bo prikazana vsa pošast-nost ignoriranja prav vsega. Zadnja leta smo mnogo slišali o povojnih montiranih procesih. Tožilčeva gorečnost in petkova sodba sta nas postavili v čas izpred petdesetih let, v čas, ko sta resnica, pravica, razum in dostojanstvo bili poteptani v blatu človeških strasti. In država? Kraj poglobitve vase. Veliki puščav-niki prvih stoletij so šli v puščavo. Vsak človek potrebuje ure tišine, molčanja in miru. Prav tiste dni sem si vzela čas in pregledala zadnje številke AD v slovenščini in angleščini. Kako zanimivo. Še posebno to zadnje sveto leto. Gospodarska, a še bolj moralna stiska muči Tajsko ... S hvaležnimi pozdravi vsem, prav vsem in s prošnjo za molitev, vaša sestra Marija Frančiška Novak.” Sr. Leopoldina Podgornik, Rim, Italija. Hvaležno vas in vse sodelavce MZA toplo pozdravljam.”
