Dva člana odseka, senatorja Pope in George, sta radi tega incidenta resignirala. Anton Yernln, 104. Willock, Pa. — Društvo it. L. Zeleznik, bo dala obilo užitka in smeha. V prejšnjih časih, ko nisd vedeli ničesar o emanaciji, so dosegali podoben učinek s tem, da so strežnik^ kopalno vodo pred uporabo bičali s šibami. Zlata doba genija Prof. Harvey C. These men are active in fraternal, political and cultural organ batons. We must fight the conditions of unemployment as it ie not local but State and nationally wide, nor is it a new event. The hiatorian of the laat fifty years will tell wou since the civilised world began to make things by machinery, run by steam and electricity, there have come with increasing frequent periods of industrial depressions, unemployment and misery. People suffered from hunger and cold before that time, but they did not suffer from lack of wot*. You say, .'How can this be done today?' By the workers organizing together for intelligent snd constructive action in their unions on the industrial field, and for their own party on the political field. For years snd years ())e workers hsve fought the capitalists with strikes and boycotts^ on the industrial field. Thst sort of a system will never end our misery. !t( is election day that makes the iin-employed a suffering srmy. There is no dissimilarity in the Lodges, and other workers' organisations. Members vote for their friend whether he or she Is capable or not to manage the organisation for which he or she waa elected. It ian't the intention of thia article to keep you in suspense or have you gueaa riddles. The answer la simple: RELIGION. Religion, my fellow reader. That perennial Jemison weed that has taken root in every continent op U)e globe, that soothing Lethean balssm that drowns every initiative of progress, that protective shield behind which any outrage may be committed, that exponent of the most vicious lies ever perpetrated. You'll want some support of the above "slander," I presume. Someone will have 4o explain the shocking accusations of "s touchy peraonal matter." In the firat place, kind reader, no one ia "touchy" about religion because he was bom that waft There ia no record anywhere of anyone having any religion until he was taught it. To every broadminded individual that should give the first clue: anything that is taught must be subjected to criticism before it is accepted. It must expect, nay,—even invite, criticism. >< Secondly, religion is no longer a, "personal" matter. ,, If it were, we would say,—well and good—let it bamboozle you K you haven't the power to reaiat it. But when it ha(i terrorised, subjugated, and slaughtered thousands of victims in some of the most bloody ,and cruel butcheries our civilisation has ever seen, it ceases to be "aomething so near to my heart that youll wound me If you diacuas it." It would Uka more than one arti cle to justify all of the above adjec tlvei. Why is It a rscket? _ A racket is a game of seising upon a shortcoming of a system or an indi vidual to appropriate the opportunity to gain wealth and power. There ave certain requisites to a- well-appointed racket. It must stop short at noth ing—including bloodshed snd cruelty to gsin its • means.,,t i What shortcoming' does religion r.else upon? Do you suppose he is sissling In Hell because he worshipped inanimate thinga, and was, therefore, a heathen according to the Catholic catechism? Religion has the second requisite of a racket to a T. It stopped short at nothing to gain ita means. From 1780 to 1K23 (30 years) in southern Italy alone 100,000 people were cruelly put to deeth because they dared to question religion! Whst about the Holy Inqulaltion—the mar tyrs of every country—Spain, Portu gal, Auatrla, France, Italy, Mexico Haa any racketeer ever put te death so many hundreds of thousands of people through so manv hundred* of yeara? And because of this disgrace to humanity and its progress we must keep mum on a thing "close to the heart"! Not one of the adjectives applied to It la severe enough—denunciatory enouhg. A whole botik could written on eech of .them. Take for instance, one very brief example—of craftiness in this racket. That social reforms are necessary to lessen the suffering of a large part of the working people and provide employment for many, will not be denied. As s matter of fact, it is recognized that if we ex)>ect to progress at all we must properly feed, clothe, shelter, and educate our people, because ths progress of civilization is not dependent on those elements living in the slum areas of the large cities, nor-1 on those half clothed, undernourished, uninformed oeople. This group will be very ealily attracted to 1i demagogue whb promises that HE will give everything to everybody, businesa as well as labor, and which, without doubt, reeulta in thy worat kind of reaction, and the worst type of viciousness, the establishment of a Fascist dictatorship. They cannot be criticized or rebuked for their position; they are working people, victims of this insane, greed for profit society of ours, where a few men own the lives of millions. The evolution of society will continue only with educated, well fed, intelligent, broad-minded working people. The constant change from one form of living to another has always depended on these" people. The change from .Capitalism to Socialism will come by the organization and education of these elements. Certainly the organisation of workers into trade unions should be encouraged, because workers do, through this limited economic power, acquire certain recognition from employers in determining the policies of the factory, mill, or mine, insofar as working conditions, wsges, and hours of labor are concerned. The need for old age assistance and pensions, and unemployment insurance has never been as great ss at the present time, because of the development of Capitalism to the point where private industry cannot, snd will not, sbsorb the mass of unemployed workers, snd ithe aged men, even though they are able and willing to wort. Other reforma could be mentioned, but for the purpoae of this article, enough have been enumerated. It is suggested that our members become interested enough in our social conditions to at leaat staunchly advocate and support such social reforms in their clubs, church groups, and other organizations. However, with all the agitation that might be carried on in support of social reforms, with all the good reaults that might be realised, the consistency and logic of Republicans and Democrats advocating such changes cannot be perceived. The point is this, how csn s person spesk-ing from the plstform in behalf of his or her candidacy, or s rank snd filer in writing, or talking to his or her friends, favor such social refoms snd still be justified in being labeled an "elephant" or s "donkey"? It is not my purpose to discourage these Republicans and Democrats from stimulating action in support of such legislation. Results can and will be realised to a certain extent. The owners, becauae of their economic power, determine whether the work-era shall work or not It is they who determine whether workers shall live a cheap life, with no chance of ad- ! vanced education for their children, or at best, a mediocre living, always ' living in a state of insecurity. It U j this gap, this gulf that separate« the worker from the owner, this conflict of interests, that clearly ihowi thst no relationship exists between th» owners of industry and the worker«. The employers are in busineiM for j one purpose, and that is profit. It is obvious that to make profits, th» employers must, of necessity, depriv» the workers of the full value of their labor. The workers get in return for their labor power wages, which is only a small part of the vslue of 1 their product. The difference between what the workers produce snd the wages they receive goes to the capitalists or employers as an unearned income. Thia unearned income accumulates over a period until a surplus results in the industry snd workers are no longer required to produce goods for ^BWMIi * sine» there isn't a profitable market. Consequently, a lay-off results, snd the subsequent agitation for socisl reforms. It seems to me that this conflict of interests between wage-esnWlrod employer, with its appalling snd disastrous consequences is sufficient evidence that workers have no reli-tionship with the owners, and should not, therefore, belong to the political parties that create such a conflict. Since the Republican and Democratic parties are the expression of Cspitsl-ism, it is readily apprecisted why the captains of industry, the cspitsl-ists, should belong to either one or the other, and contribute to both. It is obviously to their own intemt They cannot be blamed. But we, tf workers, are a bunch of fools, to put it in plain words, for tolerating such conditions when we have the power to bring about a system of ssnity, TO BRING ABOUT A CLASSLESS SOCIETY. Since it is so evident that employees are in business for profit, isn't it reasonable that they are NOT in favor of reforms, since that would necessarily reduce their profits.
