Brains Sprout New Cells A research team led by Salk Institute Research Professor Fred Gage has provided the first evidence that human brains grow new cells, overturning dogma that for years has stated that we are born with all the brain cells we will ever have and that we only lose, not gain, cells as we age. Gage and colleagues showed that new cells were generated in the brains of terminal cancer patients who had received a diagnostic agent that labels actively dividing cells. Earlier work from the Gage laboratory had shown that mice raised in a stimulating environment - one including toys, playmates and a varied diet - grew more brain cells than litter mates houses in standard cages. Enriched environments had a particularly pro- nounced effect on older mice and strains of genetically slow-learning mice. Taken together, the work from the Gage team indicates that we may have more control over the capacities of our brains than was previously thought possible. He worked by day And toiled by night. He gave up play And some delight. Dry books he read, New things to learn. And forged ahead Success to earn. He plodded on With faith and pluck. And when he won Others called it luck. Two Sneaky Guys at Air Show Bamboozle Us Again By Rudy Flis I attended the Cleveland Air Show this weekend with family and friends, as I do every year, and 1 never tire of the sore neck I get every year from looking up at the superb flying machines. The military aircraft are powerful, swift and noisy. The civilian aircraft are slow, twisting, turning, stalling and exciting to watch. I can’t walk as well as those pilots fly, and I walk often. So it makes for a great afternoon by the lake shore during the air show. When the Army Golden Knights parachute team have landed and gathered in their chutes - the aerobatic planes have performed their last roll and stall, the Navy “Blue Angels” roar down the runway and start defying gravity with their powerful fighter craft, the finale is about to begin. Innovative formations, while diving, turning and racing head on toward each other at high speeds, in precise formation, are just plain breathtaking and complete enjoyment for this soul. They say it is the hottest day ever in the U.S.A. I drink anything 1 can get. Tuesday, June 17, 1952 In the last three days. I’ve lost almost 7 pounds because of the heat. I’m working hard and taking liquids, but I can’t eat. Thursday, June 19, 1952 The weather has cooled somewhat, with a little rain. Mrs. Rihtar had a baby girl - their first after 6 boys. Wednesday, June 25, 1952 More temperatures in the high 90s. Whatever I do, I can’t sleep. I’m exhausted. Thursday, June 26 1952 I went to see Dr. Meršol. He said a nerve in my spine is pinched between two bones. He gave me an injection and prescribed a medication. I still feel exhausted. In the afternoon, I missed work for the first time in America. It was 104°F in our apartment. I went to Erz-noznik’s and slept in their basement. I woke up soaked with sweat. Tuesday, July 1, 1952 It’s a little cooler and I’m feeling better. This morning we (my family) all took the bus to E. 93rd, where we bought a new baby carriage for Tony. We walked it back home. Friday, July 4, 1952 This morning I left for a 3-day religious retreat in Lemont, Illinois. I took a train to Chicago, then a bus to Lemont. Chicago is black from soot, as if it had been bombed. Lemont has hills and trees, and mosquitoes. Saturday, July 5,1952 The weather is cold in Lemont. This morning we went to two Masses before breakfast, then another Mass and singing. In the evening, they gave us each a bottle of beer with our supper. Then we had prayers, and a candlelight procession to the Lourdes grotto. Father Odilo led the procession from a car with a megaphone. He spoke earlier in the day, too, constantly reminding us to give more and work more. I saw many old friends. We talked about what happened in the war in Slovenia 10 years ago. I argued strongly with those who felt that everyone who died fighting the communists was a martyr for his faith. In reality, most people fought to save themselves, their families and their property. Janez Ovsenik agreed, but Frank Kamin said he couldn’t stand listening to that and left. We did not find the peace and quiet that we hoped for in this retreat. Sunday, July 6, 1952 We went to Mass before breakfast, then a procession and another Mass. Bishop Rožman gave the sermon. In the afternoon, more conversation with old friends. In the evening I took the bus back to Chicago, where the Republicans are holding their national electoral conference. There are pamphlets everywhere: I like Ike! Monday, July 7,1952 The train from Chicago arrived in Cleveland at 8 a.m. Here it’s hot again. The trip cost me $34. Friday, July 11, 1952 I took Tony to the Baker Health Center on E. SS1*1 for his first vaccination. He weighs 16 lbs. The doctor said he needs to eat more soups and mashed food. Saturday,July 12,1952 Both Tony and Cilka slept poorly. Yesterday was 94°F; today 99°F. The Republicans in Chicago elected General Eisenhower to be their presidential candidate, and Richard Nixon for vice-president. Sunday,July 13, 1952 This afternoon we went to the Lourdes shrine on Euclid Avenue for litanies, a procession and sermon by Father Malavašič. Almost all of our friends from the Tro-faiach refugee camp were there. Afterwards we went to a picnic at Povirk’s. In his sermon. Father Malavašič talked about how fortunate we Slovenians are, because we now have 10,000 martyrs in heaven to pray for us (the home guard soldiers who were slaughtered by the communists after the war.) Would it be better if we were all in heaven? Should we be thankful to the British for sending our men back to the communists? I don’t know how many real saints there were among the home guard. - I’m sure there were some. I know that in our area, there were some former Spanish fighters among our home guard. And I know that mam of our young men went to the home guard because that was the only way their families could get food rations. Sunday, July 20,1952 We’ve had more very hot days. It’s been 100°F in our apartment both of the last two days. Late today, we heard that Joe Cerar drowned in Lake Aquilla, where we had the shop picnic last year. He and Tone Peternel were playing around in a rowboat. Joe slipped into the water held onto the boat for a while, but then let go, as if to swim but he didn’t know how. I heard that Tone didn’t notice when Joe went under the water. When they started looking for him, he was gone. It’s a small lake, but quite deep. They searched everywhere, but couldn’t find him. Joe was almost 20 years old. He had been called to the draft for Korea, but I heard because of a disability he was not accepted. Wednesday, July 23,1952 This morning I went to the W. Thomas Ford dealership to help the Cerar family straighten out Joe’s affairs. The dealer had made him buy $1,600 of life insurance when he bought the car. Now the insurance paid the rest of what he owed for the car. (To Be Continued) AI Koporc, ,lr. Piano Technician (216) 481-1104 Listen to - .us Our International Radio - Program WATJ 1560 AM P.O. She says, “You will be one of three lambs on stage near the stable. You will be on all fours with your head down as if you were grazing.” She went on to instruct that on the night of the play I was to wear pure white clean long Johns. Already this sounded like a sticky situation to me. Guess Ma thought this would be my chance to be a famous actor and so she bought me a new pair of white long Johns at Boston Chain, our kind of store -cheap. We had one rehearsal and supposedly all went well. Now came the opening night two days before Christmas and the basement auditorium was packed with parents, as well as nuns and priests. Sister Naomi had a “brain storm” and felt we would look more like lambs if she covered all of us lambs with pure white cotton. She rolled it out in huge sheets and it was approximately a foot wide. She really rolled us in it, leaving an opening for our eyes and mouth so we could see and breathe. It was HOT and Ray was hoping that Jesus would be born real fast so I could get out of the cotton. She wanted two of us lambs near baby Jesus and she told me to crawl off near the left side of the stage. The stage curtains are drawn open with the choir in the back singing, “Silent Night, Holy Night.” It should have been “Silent Night, HOT Night,” when you are wrapped up in cotton, two inches thick and wearing wool long Johns to boot. I heard Sister Naomi whisper from the back of the stage, “Raymond, move out further; go ahead, out further, go ahead a little more.” Well, Ray felt he had to listen to Sister Naomi, after all she was the Head Mother, as well as Head Director. I was praying that the last hymn would be sung so it would be finished and I could get out of the cotton covering. Finally, it was over and the stage curtains closed slowly, and as was my luck, I was way out and the curtains closed behind me. There I am on all fours in front of the curtain, with the entire audience watching and laughing. Sister finally opened the curtain, and again whispered, “Ray, crawl back in here, so you will be behind the curtains when they are closed again.” Well I did and got up and said, “Sister, this is it, I am done; no more, I quit.” She said, “You can’t Raymond; we have one more performance tomorrow night.” “Not with me. Sister,” I replied. She said “Raymond, don’t be so stubborn, listen to the people out there clapping.” I said, “Yeah, and listen to them laughing and chanting - Little Bo Peep lost her sheep.” It goes without saying that was my acting debut, and my one and only performance. For days after that, in school, the kids would always kid me and say, “Baa... Baa..., Baa... understand you lost your way. Baa... baa... baa. When I get up to those golden gates and run into Sister Naomi I’m gonna say, “Hey Sister, remember me?” “Yes,” Sister will say, “You were the one who lost your way on stage as a lamb.” Well, it is time for this baby lamb to go beddy-bye with a “Baa, Baa, Baa.” May the Good Lord bless and watch over all of you (and make sure this lamb does not get lost in the shuffle.) ZARNICK Bernard F. Zarnick, whose acoustic ceiling panels improve the sound quality at the Gund Arena and 40 other major sports and concert arenas in the United States, died Tuesday, August 24, 1999 at Fairview Hospital. The 63-year-old Rocky River, Ohio resident had lung cancer. Mr. Zarnick, founder and president of MBI Products of Cleveland, was an authority on sound-absorption products. He developed wall panels for recording studios, acoustical baffles for sports facilities and other noise absorbers for factories, indoor swimming pools and restaurants. His Lapendary acoustical panels contribute to the acoustics at professional basketball arenas like the Gund, as well as at the Fleet Center in Los Angeles and Mandalay Bay Arena in Las Vegas. “We worked with his company [and really, he was pretty much his company] on several of the large arena projects that we do,” Pat Clancy, manager of the Gund and other arena projects for the Ellerbe Becket architectural firm, said from her office in Kansas City. Clancy said that the Lapendary panels Mr. Zarnick designed were economical from an architect’s point of view but that her firm was even more confident because Mr. Zarnick was on the job. “He took a lot of personal responsibility,” Clancy said. “He’d come to the job site any number of times and do what he had to do to get it right.” Mr. Zarnick, a Cleveland native, graduated from Benedictine High School in 1954. After receiving a bachelor’s degree in architectural design from Ohio University at Athens in 1959, he took a job in the lamination of metal building insulation with the Johns-Manville Sales Corp. in New York, which later became a division of E.F. Hauserman Co. Mr. Zarnick was a product manager and sales engineer for the outfit before returning to Cleveland a few years later to work for the Cleveland Fabricating Co. In 1965, Mr. Zarnick founded Metal Building Interior Products Inc., which now is known as MBI Products. In the 1970s, he uneral Home memorial chapel located at reel Phone 481-3118 owner! and operated since 1908 switched his focus from laminating metal building insulation to designing sound-absorption materials. His first project involving the Lapendary panels was at the Arco Arena in Sacramento, which the Sacramento press formerly called “Echo Arena” because of its poor acoustics, according to Mr. Zamick’s son-in-law and business associate, Christopher Kysela. “Bernie was an extremely motivated person,” Kysela said. Mr. Zarnick held several patents and trademarks for his inventions and products. He was active in numerous professional and business organizations. He had held various offices with the Lakeshore Area Development Corp., including president. He was a charter member of the Architectural Acoustics Society. Mr. Zarnick, a member of the Phi Kappa Theta fraternity at Ohio University, was named the fraternity’s Man of Achievement for 1992. He had helped reestablish the organization at his alma mater and served on its national board. Survivors include his wife of 32 years, Genny; daughters, Laura Grabowsky of Canton, Lisa Kysela of Rocky River and Molly of Portland, Ore.; and two grandchildren. Services were at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday, August 28 at St. Christopher Catholic Church, Rocky River. Donations may be made to the Bernard F. Ta je navadno največji, ker gre ves dobiček za misijone. 40 afriških bogoslovcev, 12 ljubljanskih in 8 mariborskih. Zofi Ri-felj in ga. Vsem bolnikom želimo hitrega okrevanja in boljšega zdravja. Kupili so staro hišo v bližini fare Sv. Imenovali so jo “Baragov dom”. Mauser, prof. Lipovec, prof. Njegove povesti, romani, črtice, knjige in pesmi so vsem znane. Edi Gobec, avtor in urednik dosedaj vsaj osmih knjig, ustanovitelj Slovenian American Institute - Slovenian Research Center of America. ❖ Pred sedmimi leti so Slovenci postavili stavbo svoje demokracije; sredi njihove zemlje stoji, nedograjena in nedodelana in njene še vedno rdeče stene strmijo v dalje pred seboj. Res! Zdaj piše, raziskuje zgodovino Slovencev, tuintam v slovenske časopise napiše kakšno ostro pismo bralcev in še vedno stanuje v bolnišnici, kjer si sam kuha, pere in skrbi zase. Kje in s čim zanj nista bili pomembni vprašanji. 20) IVO JEVNIKAR (nadaljevanje s str. 17) vas in vaših organizacij. In tu opažamo zaskrbljivo demografsko nazadovanje naše skupnosti, veliko politično razdeljenost in torej nemoč naših ljudi, širjenje zgrešenega pojmovanja multikulturnosti s pozabljanjem na svoje. - S predavanjem dr. Vaška Simonitija “Med zgodovino in sedanjostjo” so se končali 34. Med njimi so bili: Lojze Peterle, Janez Janša, Jože Bernik, Andrej Capuder, Alojz Rebula, Viktor Blažič, Stanislav Klep, Danijel Malenšek, Anton in Lidija Drobnič, Vinko Levstik, Tine Velikonja, Jože Strgar, Peter Vencelj, Jože Pučnik, Ivo Hvalica, Ivan Štuhec, Stanko Janežič in drugi. - Dejan Pušenjak Progressive Slovene Women of America proudly offers the Fourth Edition of Treasured Slovenian and International Recipes Name.............................................. Zamenjali so železni oklep s krono z visokim ovratnikom, a brez hujših težav radi ravnotežja. Jožeta Mlinariča in za mene, dar g. Ljudski praznik. In so veliko storile. Vsi smo bili pregnani. Zdaj veliko dela v Kigaliju. Tam je strašno maščevanje. Tam je še s. Vesna. Dela je veliko. Vojna najbolj prizadene najnižje sloje, stare in otroke. Mi smo z njimi. Revščina, bolezni, strah. Za Božič in še zdaj je mirno. Lani poleti so nas napadli, pobijali, ropali in požigali. Kmalu grem v Slovenijo po umetni kolk (radi prometne nesreče). Lep pozdrav Vam in vsem dobrotnikom, Jože Mlinarič.”
