Slovenska župnija sv. Gregorija Velikega | St. Gregory the Great Slovenian Church 46/54 Številka - Number / Leto - Year 11.11. 2018 32. Nedelja MED LETOM 32nd Sunday in Ordinary time Fr. V teh zamotanih in mučnih razmerah in ob osamljenem preroku, vpletenem v boj proti kralju Ahabu in proti vsemu ljudstvu, brez dvoma zelo izstopa ponižna podoba vdove. Jezus obtožuje pismouke neskladnosti z njihovim lastnim učenjem, obtožuje jih nečimrnosti in hudobnosti. Rabini bi morali poučevati zastonj, toda ni bilo težko ob tem služiti mastne denarce. Njihovi nasveti so bili dragi, četudi na račun najrevnejših in najšibkejših. In tako nas evangelist Marko uvede takoj v zgodbo o »vdovi«. Jezus osvetli izvirno misel, lastno rabinskemu svetu. 5-10) govori o Jezusu velikem duhovniku. Avtor pisma Hebrejcem razmišlja o podobi Jezusa duhovnika z daritvenega vidika. Daritve v templju so pridobivale božjo naklonjenost do ljudstva. We took time to honour deceased members of our CWL and Slomšek's Altar Society at a memorial Mass on November 7th. Thank you to all those who attended this Mass and everyone who assisted with readings, Mass preparations and the follow up reception. A special thank you to the English choir for providing beautiful music. And, a very special thank you to Father Drago who prepared the program for this Mass, gathered many photographs and formatted slides to match the resolution of our new projector. Nato smo se ob petih popoldne zbrali še v mavzoleju pokopališča Our Lady of the Angels. Tudi tam je nas vsako leto več. ¡1 ¡mm VESTNIK 2018 | 508 ctfttOUC WOMEN'S LEAGUP ^OUŠKA ZENSK4 ZVE?A \968 - 20;s wmmi CWL - KZZ JUBILEE ANNIVERSARY Preparations for our Jubilee Anniversary as a Catholic Women's League are in full swing. One Soul Capital Campaign_ Frequently Asked Questions The Diocese of Hamilton is conducting the One Heart, One Soul Campaign to raise money for every Parish in the Diocese and for shared ministries. Answers to a set of Frequently Asked Questions appear in Parish bulletins regularly. A compilation of all questions that have been published are available throughout the campaign at oneheartonesoul.ca. What is the Diocese of Hamilton? The Diocese is an area of southeastern Ontario and a collection of 118 Parishes and 28 mission churches with 160 active priests. The Diocese aims to shepherd, support and serve Catholics in those Parishes and this region. Why does the Diocese need a campaign? Isn't it already financially sound? Yes, the Diocese is financially sound, and that stability is allowing the Diocese to conduct a campaign that focuses on the needs of Parishes, while also enhancing some Diocesan ministries. The campaign is part of the long-term vision for the Diocese, a vision of a thriving Diocese supporting thriving Parishes working to draw more people closer to Christ. The campaign has the potential to renew struggling Parishes and to make strong Parishes stronger. What are the Diocese's specific goals for the portion of funds it receives? Fifteen percent of the funds raised will go toward shared Diocesan ministries. These include campus ministry to college and university students as well as several ministries focused on those in need: hospital ministry, prison ministry and ministry to migrant workers. Why did the Diocese choose the Steier Group as a consultant for this campaign? The Diocese of Hamilton searched for a firm that best fit the Diocese's needs and interviewed some of the leading Catholic fundraising companies in North America. The Steier Group's tremendous experience with Catholic Diocesan and Parish campaigns, the quality of their on-site campaign managers, and - perhaps most of all - their love of the Church and commitment to living and encouraging Christian stewardship played big roles in the decision. First Reading 1 Kings 17:10-16 God rewards the widow who cares for Elijah. Second Reading Hebrews 9:24-28 Christ's sacrifice has dealt with sin and death once and for all. Gospel Mark: 12:38-44 Jesus uses the poor widow's generosity to teach us that to be his disciples we are called to give ourselves totally. "The jar of meal was not spent nor the jug of oil emptied." Illustration "It's not rocket science!" is a phrase which is in constant use today. Usually the speaker is trying to convince us that the message on offer should be relatively obvious and therefore easily understood. Another appeal which people may make is that we need only use our common sense and the message will be clear. When we listen to Jesus inviting us to reflect on our experience, he does something similar, often presenting us with paradoxes, statements that seem self-contradictory, but which in fact are inviting us to be honest with ourselves and recognise that it is all too easy to deceive ourselves, especially if the truth is likely to disturb what are commonly called our "comfort zones". So, for example, Jesus tells us that "the first shall be last" and that "those who lose their lives will save them". He seems to take delight in turning our human way of thinking S11 I VESTNIK 2018 and judging upside down, and in today's readings we have another perfect illustration of this method of teaching. Gospel Teaching In today's Gospel, Jesus invites his listeners to observe what is going on. The scribes were those learned men whose job was to interpret the Jewish Law; yet, like so many people vested with authority, they were tempted to go beyond their brief and introduce unnecessary new laws and customs. And these were designed to ensure that while they retained their social status and their "comfort zones", others were forced to carry the additional burden. All Jesus needs to do is to invite his listeners to observe what is going on. They are opposite the treasury, where there were collection boxes to help defray the costs of running the Temple. The money was flowing in and it would seem that there were those who made sure that others were aware of how much they were contributing, but they were the rich and they could well afford it. By contrast Jesus draws their attention to the poor widow, who contributes her last two small coins - the equivalent of a penny. The message is unequivocal: "this poor widow has put more in than all who have contributed to the treasury; for they have all put in money they had over, but she from the little she had has put in everything she possessed, all she had to live on". Application In response to Jesus, we may be tempted to echo a phrase that a famous tennis player made his own when challenging an umpire over a line decision: "You cannot be serious!" But Jesus is serious. He returns to this message over and over again for it is his Gospel, his Good News. The world does not belong to us; it belongs to his Father and we are entrusted with its stewardship. Consequently the more we try to amass wealth for ourselves, the *s | i i hm Q -Q a ' Jm JttftilV- more vulnerable and insecure we become, needing to build bigger barns or invest in more security for our protection. By the same token, the more preoccupied we are about status and wealth, the more selfish we become and the less we care about others, thereby creating greater and greater inequality. The history of the world teaches us that human beings have never learnt this lesson but continue to seek remedies that are bound to fail because they are generally driven by self-interest. In less than two decades of the present century, we have seen an unprecedented monetary crisis that has affected the whole world. The idea that market forces will themselves create the kind of wealth that trickles down to improve the lives of everyone has proved itself false, because it presumes that human nature has redeemed itself and people will not abuse the system for their own ends. As followers of Jesus today we can only strive to live life simply and demonstrate that there is another way: a way that becomes possible only when we accept that we cannot redeem ourselves. The more we treasure the gift of God's Spirit, the more we will let go and trust. What more beautiful meditation could we ask for than the image of the other widow in today's liturgy: the one who responded to Elijah and shared her bread and water with him? Her generosity was rewarded: "the jar of meal was not spent nor the jug of oil emptied". May we approach our Eucharist today in that same spirit of hope and trust.
