Včeraj popoldne ob petih je prišlo poročilo, da je angleška armada že dosegla nekaj teh zračnih čet in da se polagoma bliža tudi drugim. Tanki in topništvo razbijajo nemške vrste, ki branijo dohod do zavezniških parašutarjev. Nemci naskakpjejo z vsem razpoložljivim orožjem parašutar-je, ki se že šest dni vztrajno branijo, čeprav popolnoma obkoljeni pri Arnhemu. Slabo vreme je vzrok, da parašutarjem ne more-' jo poslati pomoči po zraku. Strahoviti boji so se razvili vzdolž vse zapadne fronte, kjer Nemci desperatno poskušajo ubraniti Siegfried črto. Na nekaterih točkah so Nemci ustavili prodiranje zaveznikov, na nekaterih so jih pa celo potisnili nekoliko naaaj. Vendar zatrjujejo poročila, da Nemci niso pognali zaveznikov še na«aj na francosko ozemlje. Ena cela divizija zavezniških parašutarjev je obkoljena v Ho-landiji, kjer se je zadnjo nedeljo spustila na tla v kotu Holandije, da odpre pot okrog Siegfried linije v nemško Porurje. ---o- Komunisti so šli k CIO in k A. F. of L. Pred kakimi 1750 leti je vladal rimskemu cesarstvu Commodus, eden najbolj krvoločnih tiranov, kar jih pozna zgodovina. Ta vrag v človeški podobi je postal končno še tako krut, da so se ga začeli bati že njegovi lastni pristaši. Staknili so skupaj glave in skovali zaprto proti njemu. Nekega dne so ga paraziti v palači umorili. Potem so postavili na prestol senatorja Pertinaxa, človeka najčistejšega rekorda. Edina napaka novega cesarja je bila, da je bil preveč pošten, da bi postal demagog. Pričel je takoj z reformami. Znižal je davke, zmanjšal je državne stroške, skratka: začel je z vlado v korist naroda. Razumljivo, da to ni bilo povolji parazitom, ki so hoteli živeti na račtfn naroda. Tri mesece potem, ko so ga postavili za najvišjo glavo v rimskem cesarstvu, ga je umorila straža pretorijancev. Pretorijanci so bilj, cesarjeva telesna straža, ki je uživala mnogo privilegijev in je faktično nekaj časa diktirala vladi. Bila je tako mogočna, da je odstavlja-la in postavljala cesarje po svoji volji, to se pravi: kdor je več ponudil za prestol. Moč vladati rimskemu cesarstvu je bila torej na razpolago tistemu, ki je več plačal. Seveda, ta je potem Že gledal, da je dobil denar zopet nazaj. Odiral in iz-žemal je ljudstvo do mozga in na prestolu se je lahko vzdržal, dokler je bil po volji pretorijancem. Vprašajmo se: ali bi ameriški narod trpel kaj takega? Odgovor na to ni težak, saj ga lahko odgovori vsak otrok. Ameriški prestol, to se pravi urad najvišjega izvršnega uradnika v deželi ni na ponudbo onemu, ki bi največ plačal zanj, vsaj direktno ne. Tako pravimo, vendar se godi prav tisto v drugačni obliki tudi tukaj, kot se je godilo pred 1800 leti v Rimu. Naši kandidati sicer ne ponujajo za izvolitev ravno denarja, obljubljajo pa raznim razredom in slojem gotove privilegije. Za izvolitev ne obljubljajo denarja iz svojega lastnega žepa, obljubljajo pa razne dobre službe ifi korita gotovim skupinam in s tem dobe glasove. Torej bi tudi tukaj lahko rekli: kdo dd več? Ker največkrat je izvoljen oni, ki največ obljubi delavcem, famarjem, businessu, tovarnarju itd. S tem ni rečeno, da je to kaka podkupnina za glasove in vendar — ali ni izvoljen tisti, ki obljubi največ? Novi deal, ki je danes v sedlu, obljublja, da bo še naprej skrbel za interese delavcev, za interese farmarjev, da bo preskrbel delo vrnivši vojakom, da bo izboljšal to, da bo izboljšal ono. Ampak nasprotji kandidat obljublja pa še stokrat več in vse bojlšo administracijo. Torej ni koncem konca drugega kot javna dražba: kdo da več za ameriški prestol v Beli hiši ? Komur bodo volivci bolj verjeli, tisti bo izvoljen. Toda dočim pravimo, da je bila dražba za rimski prestol navadna podkupnina, pravimo tukaj, da je to politika strank. Katera stranka zna bolj lepo govoriti in več obljubiti, tista zmaga s svojim kandidatom. In stanovi delajo za izvolitev tistega, od katerega pričakujejo največ privilegijev. V državi Ohio imamo pa letos kandidata za guvernerja, ki ne obljubuje nič. Edino, kar pravi je: ako bom izvoljen za guvernerja jaz, bom vladal za narod, ki me je izvolil in po svoji najboljši vesti. Ta kandidat je Frank J. Lausche. Državljani, takih kandidatov se ne bojte! Pri takih ne bodo uživali posamezniki kakih posebnih privilegijev, pod vlado takih mož bomo vsi enaki. Kaj bo s preostankom? Naš direktor za mobilizacijo, Byrnes, je napovedal, da bo imela naša dežela po padcu Nemčije na rokah 6 milijonov ton živil. Kongres se je zdrznil ob tej novici in šel takoj na delo, da ubije dva vrabca z enim strelom. Vpeljati namerava živilske znamke, s katerimi bi dobili potrebni zastonj živila od vlade. To bi pomagalo revnih slojem, oberfem bi se vlada pa rešila surplusa, ki bi lahko postal nevaren tržni ceni poljskim pridelkom. Toda morda pa ima kongres radi tega čisto nepotrebne skrbi. Direktor Byrnes je rekel, da bo šlo skoro 4 milijone ton cd tistih šestih preko morja, najbrže kot dar za relif potrebnim deželam, nekaj pa za prehrano okupacijskih armad zaveznikov. Torej bi ostalo v deželi po tem računu še kakih 2,000,000 ton živeža v surplusu. In koliko pa je 2,000,000 ton živeža med 135,000,000 naroda? Na, če bi bil ves ta preostanek v pšenici, bi bilo to nekako 66 milijonov bušljev, ali manj kot 10% naše normalne letne produkcije. Torej prava bagatela! Si,cei pa nihče ne ve ravno natančno, koliko preostanka bo v deželi, ko bomo enkrat Hitlerju zavili vrat. Tudi nihče ne ve, koliko ga bomo poslali preko morja, predno bomo imeli v deželi drugo letino. Zato je pameton, če se preveč ne vznemirjamo radi preostanka v vladni kašči. Od tam ga vedno lahko vzamemo, če je. Zelo narobe bi pa bilo, če bi bila kašča prazna. Potem bi nas pa res skrbelo. Kadar bo vojna industrija ustavila kolesje, se bodo ljudje kmalu začeli oglašati za relif. V deželi imamo tudi v najboljših časih siromake. To so. taki, ki radi onemoglosti ali radi pohablje-nosti ne morejo delati. Ti morajo tudi živeti. Torej naj si naš kongres ne beli preveč glave, kam bo s-surplusom. Da bi ga le kaj bilo! »i mnnu h l i i rn innn iTri i m m i u 11 ititut it ri BESEDA IZ NARODA Seja Presercev Na setanku Presercev, ki se je vršil 10. septembra, je bil sklep prvega setanka Presercev, da se za nedeljo 24. septembra povabi na skupno zborovanje vse tiste Preserce ,ki se zanimajo za svojce v stari domovini in ki se zanimajo, da se organizirajo v poseben klub. Na sestanku je bil. izvoljen začasni odbor, ki ima nalogo pripraviti gotove stvari ter obvestiti še ostale Preserce, da se udeležijo tega skupnega sestanka, ki se vrši v nedeljo 24. septembra ob 3:30 popoldne v stari šoli sv. Vida na Norwood Rd. in Glass Ave. Na ta sestanek ali sejo se vabi vse rojake in rojakinje, ter njih žene odnosno može, ki so doma iz drugih krajev, ter njih družine; vsi ti s<> polnomočno upravičeni priti na sejo. Zadnji sestanek, na katerem je bil izbran začasni odbor, je pokazal, da se naši ljudje za tak sestanek in za skupno organiziranje zanimajo; zato se vabi še vse tiste, ki se niso zadnjič udeležili tega sestanka, da gotovo pridejo, in seveda prav tako kot tisti, ki so zadnjič bili. Torej vsi. Vabi začasni odbor Presercev. Hite, member of a mortar platoon, served with the Italian Army ski troops for two years before emigrating to America in 1935. His father, Brother and sister are still living in a little town near Trieste. Frank is now a proud American soldier, and the boys said that his mortar platooon was firing so fast during the Bougainville battle last March, that two guns got overheated and burned out.
