286 | VESTNIK 2022 In poglejmo še tretjo priliko, najbolj dodelano in 19TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME Response: Happy the people the Lord has chosen to be his own. First Reading Wisdom 18:6-9 The dark night of the Passover became light for God’s children through faith and hope. They had to rely on faith, but it was that faith that marked them as God’s chosen people. A people threatened and vulnerable became strong in hope through their trust in God. Second Reading Hebrews 11:1-2. 8-19 Faith is the foundation of a life lived in hope, even for people who never live to see their ultimate hopes fulfilled. The scriptures give us many examples of hope-filled lives that built a future for God’s people. Our security lies in our faith and hope in God’s unshakeable love. Gospel Luke 12:32-48 Jesus teaches us that what we cherish most is the sign of where our heart lies. God’s heart is set on us, for we are God’s priceless treasure. Setting our hearts on God’s kingdom and its justice will lead us to the deepest union with Jesus and to building a world after his own heart. “For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.” Illustration Antiques Roadshow is a popular UK television series where people bring family treasures to be valued by experts in antiques. The expert encourages them to tell the story behind the object. What people are bringing is often not just an artistic treasure but the story of their family relationships, history and iden- tity in a war souvenir, an engagement ring or a pile of love letters. Or it may be an ornament picked up in a market or auction as a bargain, sold by its previous owner for next to nothing. One person’s junk is another person’s treasure. At the end of the interview, the expert comments on the object in terms of its antique or artistic value and then reveals its monetary value. Sometimes there is shock and amazement that an ugly old object that has gathered dust for years is worth huge sums of money. Sometimes there is disappointment that what was thought to be worth a fortune is, in fact, virtually worthless. But often the owner says that whatever the object’s worth, they would not sell it because its value is beyond price. It holds precious memories of childhood, or of a beloved relative now long gone. Few people are prepared to sell what is precious to them in such terms. We cannot think of cherished memories of loving relationships or of our family sense of identity in terms of money, and this tells us something important about who we are made to be as human beings. Gospel Teaching Most of Jesus’ followers were poor people who struggled daily to make a living. His teaching on selling their possessions and giving money to those who were poor must have amazed them. They were poor, weren’t they? So why not keep the money to support themselves? The answer lies in what Jesus says about remaining alert and prepared for the coming of salvation. He is talking of where our heart truly is and therefore of where our deepest consciousness is. If our minds are entirely occupied with the attachment to things or people, that can betray a deep lack of trust, and we will have little space for developing a mind and heart in tune with God’s vision for the world. Being a “cheerful giver” is evidence not only of generosity but of courage. It is evidence that our deepest hope lies in God and not in money, power or any other means of dominating our surrounding world. Pope Benedict XVI, in his encyclical on hope, Spe salvi, said that “the one who has hope lives differently”. This Gospel is Jesus’ invitation to us to live differently, with a different set of values that puts love of God and of others, and transformative action in the world, before the baubles of fame, power and fortune. We can live confidently and without fear when we have become free from all forms of internalised idolatry. An old song speaks of freedom being about having nothing left to lose. For Jesus, freedom comes from knowing what to set our heart on in order to live fully. Praying what St Ignatius of Loyola called the Examen, or Examination of Conscience, daily is a helpful way of recognising what is pulling us towards God or turning us away. It’s about knowing where our treasure truly lies and building up our relationship with Jesus so that it is stronger than our fears. Application When Jesus challenges us to give in a way that supports and transforms the life of others, he is talking of what it truly means to believe that we are one body with him. For what we do to the least of his brothers and sisters, we do to him. This is the building up of the kingdom, to which all are invited as transformers of the world and “revolutionaries of tenderness”. This kind of generosity is not just going through the motions but giving away part of ourselves. By doing so we receive ourselves back from the hands of “the least”, who are the mirror of Christ – whatever we do for them, we do for him and vice versa. Our anxieties and fears are transformed into hope when we let go of needing to control everything. To live this transformative faith, hope and love we need to become alert and sensitive to the signs of Christ’s presence on earth. The more we become aware of him in all areas of our life, the more he shows us what it is to be fully and truly human. Saturday we thank Martina Bellemore and Mary Hode. Saturday night we thank Pat & Miro Pinter and Heidi Rumohr. And a huge shout-out to the youngest member of the Executive Nicholas Scarcelli – who stayed late serving refreshments to our sweaty dancers to the wee hours of the morning. And then on Sunday – thanks Mary & Tom Miklavcic and Sunday evening, thanks John Novak for tending bar. Sunday we wake to a new day and begin that day with gratitude. Holy Mass is always so lovely when we gather at the outdoor chapel and join voices in prayer and song. Thank you so much Father Branko, our visiting priest from Slovenia as Father Drago is away. We thank those who helped set up the chapel, work the audio, proclaim the word of the Lord through readings and petitions, gather the offertory, and all the other details behind-the-scenes. Thanks also to Frank Novak for driving Father Branko to the park so he could celebrate mass with us. VESTNIK 2022 | 291 Thanks to the members of the Executive who flawlessly run event after event – making sure all the details are covered. No wknd can take place without this well-organized machine. Thanks so much to our hardworking and dedicated President Danny Demsar, the industrious and conscientious Treasurer (and so much more) Peter Novak, and the rest of the diligent team: Gerry Finn, Louis Kopac, Regina & John Bell, Joise Dube, Nicholas Scarcelli. You guys are the best! Sunday was a big day for the kids – Mladinski Dan / Childrens Day. This event usually draws a huge crowd of children – but being the first after Covid – and hosting another event just last week – the gathering of children was smaller – but those who joined in had the best time ever! We begin with “Old School” Races: age range Running races, 3 Legged races, Wheelbarrow races, and Potato Sack races – culminating in the child & adult Water balloon Toss. It is so joyful to hear the sound of children laughter and to see their smiling eyes. Thanks so much to organizer Mary Ann Demsar and helpers Sarah Žunic, Sidonia Poppa, Victoria Watson. But, that’s not all folks – after the games, we held the Slo-Triathlon. Yup! In this age range competition, little kids first ride a bike, swim across the little pool, then run to the finish line. For the older kids, you ride your bike a longer distance, swim across the bigger pool, run to the gazebo where your “pig-roasting” skills are tested. Can you light a fire? Can you keep it burning? Can you roast your pig? The winner is declared as the first who burns through the rope signifying the pig is roasted and ready to eat. Thanks so much to Amaris & Lisa Pozeg and Amanda Purdon for running this fun and exciting event. Once again, due to smaller crowds, we did not have enough participants to hold the Adult Slo-Triathlon (that adds one more leg to the competition) so make sure you mark the Sunday of the August Long Wknd in your calendar for 2023 and join in with the fun. You won’t be disappointed – either as a participant or a spectator. Did I miss anything? I hope not. As you can see – there is always something going on at Slovenski Park to keep our Slovenian culture alive through recreation, culture, faith, food, family & friends. Thanks to all members who selflessly volunteer their time and talents. Thanks to members and friends who support the 292 | VESTNIK 2022 park by attending the events and supporting generously at the kitchen and bar. Hope to see you next time – for the Labour Day Long Wknd. Sat & Sun Baseball Tournament. Sat night Corn Roast and Dance with DJ Joe. Sun Liturgy at 1:00. And Sunday afternoon/evening fun with Band Šibaj. Join us!
