The ancient pagan custom of Easter was connected to the return of the goddess of spring, signifying the rebirth in the world. For Christians, Easter commemorates the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. The name itself evolved from the name of the Norse goddess of spring -Eostre - and the Christians celebrated the rebirth in the world. The Easter egg was always considered as a symbol of reviving life and had been painted in the past in red to remind Christians of the blood of Christ. May Easter be for us a NEW BEGINNING - a rebirth of ourselves. SthJ8501*1- - -Came the channel from Comobranco to the Allies. To be frank, I do not know how it functioned. I never inquired about that. What I do know, as a former member of the White guard, that our unit had a special task to protect a Slovenian-British radio operator dropped by parachute by the British. He had daily connection with Cairo. In the turmoil after the Italian surrender, he wanted to go his own way, but he fell into Partisan hands and disappeared. His code name was Bias. From our Domobranci view, the Allied airmen had it relatively easy. In an extreme, unfortunate case, a German POW camp loomed down the road. Not for long though, as the Allied victory was on the horizon. And Germans with all their ferocity, have not been known to torture and shoot the POWs in their hands. We Domobranci, sandwiches between Nazi and Partisan terror, had it different. We fought for our lives and the lives of our people. I will never forget my own agony when I was on the point of falling, wounded, alive, into Partisan hands. The Vietnam War veterans, ex-POW in Communist hands who survived with luck, may tell similar convincing stories. Resistance to Nazism I am glad to note that Mr. Rucigay tells Slovenian Partisans apart from others in their Yugoslav crowd. They were really a very special pack of Slovenians. Theirs is the glory that the Communist revolution in the postwar Slovenia was not imported from without, but from within. They knew how to camouflage their domestic terror for the public eye with the supposed fight for liberation and resistance to Nazism. For such a stunt to prevail, after withdrawal of Domobranci, the decisive help of Tito’s other Yugoslav Partisans and generous Allied support was necessary. Exclusively on their own, with Domobranci present, they would not be able to bring about the Slovenian Communist Revolution. Now, with discoveries of their massacres all over Slovenia their “’’fight for liberation” is becoming an old hat. Their Society of Veterans (Zveza Borcev) still clings to it and is still giving moral and political advice in writing and personally into the hands -- of all the living people, can you imagine — his Holiness, the Pope. The entitlement to their teachings of ethics is clear. Their membership has included the undeclared actors of massacres with blood on their hands. In the present time, however, the former “Freedom Fighters” are mostly interested in support from abroad based on their “resistance to Nazism.” Let me tell some facts about this side of their activ- ity. The main wartime concern of the Nazis for any occupied territory was its contribution to their wartime effort, for the Nazi final “Sieg,” victory. The same was true for Slovenia. In this way and in the teeth of “heroic Partisan resistance” the Slovenian industrial centers (Jesenice, Kranj, Kamnik, Celje, Maribor), all of them outside Slovenian Domobranci territory, worked full time for the German Sieg throughout the war. What’s worse, the Germans, knowing the force of Partisan resistance built, unmolested by the Partisans, a big industrial park in Stmisce - Dravsko polje plain, for the purpose of airplane production. This was far away from Domobranci controlled territory. It suffered from the Allied bombing only. Some token of Partisan resistance to Nazism was also their cease-fire along the Ljubljana-Trieste railway in Primorska region a few weeks after D-day. The cease-fire left the railway to the Nazis and the hinterland to the Partisans. For the latter it was the people of hinterland that counted. However, the best and most telling testimony, the masterpiece of the nature of Partisan resistance to Nazism, they reserved for its last coup. With European armistice on May 8th, 1945, the Nazi power was definitely and totally broken. Except for Slovenian Partisans. They continued to resist. At the time Domobranci were moving toward the British forces in Austria evading the trap between the Bulgarian army in the east and non-Slovenian Tito’s forces in the west. Slovenian Partisans followed timidly in the steps of the withdrawing Domobranci, unable to prevent their movement. Two days later, in Austria, still in Slovenian territory at the Drave bridge near Borovlje, they gathered the courage for a stand. They pretended the general armistice to be used to achieve the surrender of Domobranci into their hands. My company and myself took part in the attack that followed. In less than an hour everything was clear and we gained access to the bridge and to the British forces. The failure on the military field did not prevent the partisans from proceeding according to their usual method. They got hold of 16 Slovenian civilian refuges fleeing from Partisan terror. The refugees had strayed outside the Domobranci protective umbrella. (To Be Continued) Certain foods are associated with the Easter season. Pretzels were originally a Lenten food. Their twisted shapes suggested arms crossed in prayer. Hot cross buns, which have a cross made of icing on the top were first baked in England to be served on Good Friday but are now eaten through the Easter season. Dr. Zenon A. (Continued from page 1) Hearing the words to this song awakens an indescribable desire to be able tc reach into the past and walk the paths our grandparents walked in their youth. To cut down the overgrowth and follow their footsteps in the grassy pathways. I have heard it said that music and song are the voices of angels, and hearing this song reminded me, too, of an incident I experienced on one of the trips which my late husband, Frank, and I took to Slovenia. We were strolling through a park in Ljubljana one day, and coming toward me, in the distance, was a young mother holding firmly the hand of her tiny little daughter who was straining to be let free. The mother released her grasp and the little tyke came running toward me, as through she recognized me. She flung her little arms around my legs and would not let go. The mother followed close behind, laughing in astonishment as to what prompted the child to react to me in that fashion. In that instant the thought occurred to me that perhaps this little angel and I had walked the same path together in a former life and she did indeed know me. My heart still sings when I think of that beautiful day in the park. Speaking of music, and its. effect on our lives, the Singing Society Zarja invites you to join us on a musical trip to Slovenia on Saturday, April 27 at the Slovenian Society Home on Re-cher Avenue. We will be presenting Ed Ozanich’s skit, The Truly Wonderful Music Shoppe on the occasion of our 80th Spring Frolic. Ed has been working hand-in-hand with President Ed Polšak, Director Doug Elersich, and Assistant Director Josephine Turkman to put together this fun skit. A good Slovenian-style dinner will be served from 5 to 6:30 (doors open at 4:45 p.m.). The program begins at 7 o’clock followed by dancing to the John Vadnal Orchestra. Also there will be a Gay Nineties Cabaret and Gostilna with musical selections by Zarja singers. Tickets for the entire day’s entertainment are $17.00; dance only: $5.00; children under 12: $8.00. We thank you for your support of Zarja’s musical efforts. Serbs try to block Slovenia debt restructuring NEW YORK (Reuters) -Raising the stakes in the legal wrangling over the debt of former Yugoslavia, Serbia hopes to force Slovenia’s U.S. lawyers to cease their representation of the Republic of Slovenia, a source said. Last week, Serbia filed suit in the United Kingdom against Slovenia to block the republic’s debt restructure package with foreign banks. Belgrade had contended that Slovenia’s deal, which would assume 18 percent of Yugoslavia’s more than $4 billion commercial bank debt, violated the 1988 new financing agreement that divided the assets and liabilities of the former Yugoslavia between its successor states. —Robin Verbose CO V \G T //?£. For 46 years our home-base was the Slovenian National Home on St. Clair Ave., then, due to the fact that our members moved to the eastern suburbs, we re-located our base to the Slovenian Society Home in Euclid, Ohio. Thus, on Saturday, April 27th, Zarja will present its 34'1’ Spring Frolic at SSH, with our Dinner-Program-Dance production. Dinner will be served in the lower hall. On the menu will be breaded pork chops, roast chicken, plus veggies, dessert, and coffee. Doors open at 4:45 p.m., serving is from 5 to 6:30. The program, is titled “The Truly Wonderful Music Shoppe” (authored by Ed Oza- nich) - The focal point is a light-hearted selection of music and humor. It will begin at 7 p.m. Directing the chorus is Doug Elersich, with the assistance of pianists Millie Wojtila, and Ed Polšak, accordionists Jim Kozel and Steve Valencie. Our stage and audio manager is Ed Oza-nich. We must also credit our members, our planning, publicity, kitchen, refreshment, costume, note: custodians, committees (too many to name individually). The success of all performances depend on the dedication of the singers by attending the rehearsals, as well as the talented capabilities we are fortunate to have, our friendly “helping hands.” Adding to the entertainment is our cabaret combo, who will, as always, oblige. The Vadnal orchestra, with their congeniality and understanding - the soul of Slovenian music, will bring to life our Happy Easter FROM The Jerse Family Ed, Shannon, Teddy and Mairin Anne Jerse dancers’ desires until midnight. Refreshments will be available throughout the evening. Admission is $17. Tickets may be obtained from Zarja members, at the SSH Clubroom, or by phone: call Vicky Kozel 531-5542; Barbara Elersich 1-216-257-2540; Sophie Elersich 531-8402 - all have answering service. Sadly missed by: Husband Joe (Joker) Arko Cleveland, April 4,1996 St. Vitus Church Dear Parishioners, Holy Week is only a short time away. For us Catholics the days of Holy Week are the most important in the entire year, because they mean to us the wonderful work of salvation from sin and death which Jesus came to accomplish for us and for humanity. Through our active participation in the Holy Week liturgies, we accompany Jesus through His agony in Gethsemani and the betrayal by Judas, His suffering and death on the Cross, and on Easter morning, witnesses to His Resurrection from the dead. Through it all, we sense Jesus’ forgiveness of our sins, as well as His never ending love for us. It is our hop« and wish that every parishioner would fully experience Christ’s forgiveness in the sacrament of Penance, and receive the Eucharist on Easter morning. We would like to invite every parishioner to make an honest effort of coming to the parish church for all of the Holy Week’s liturgies. Please pray for one another, and especially for your priests. About lj bu, brilliant blue sky studded with white cotton powder-puff clouds. The sun grew very warm and we turned the auto heat off. The Blue Ridge Mountains could be seen on the horizon and they are aptly named. The next watering hole would be Charlotte, north Carolina. Classical music radio station WBTF was found and we enjoyed works by Shostakovich, Mozart and old American army songs, very fitting for the sovereign state of Virginia. We stopped at a lovely Hampton Inn outside of Charlotte, N.C. Our blue car was now a beige/brown color, totally encrusted with lumpy brown ice. After check-in, we promptly drove into Charlotte proper and found a car wash. Here the service was excellent, efficient and only $4.00. During our wait, we made conversation with an amiable policeman who told us we were visiting during record-breaking cold (16 degrees). Huh, we knew that! We wanted to walk historic old-town Charlotte, and we did try, but the wind was so fierce and the sunshine gave off no warmth, that it was intolerable. So cold and yet the globe-shaped pear trees, which were everywhere, were in full white flower defiant of the wind and cold. The Hampton Inns are actually bed and breakfasts, so this a.m. we had the pleasure of breaking bread with the Miami University baseball team here for a game with Davidson College. They were such quiet gentlemen (pre-game meditation, no doubt) and so courteous. I looked them over, so handsome in their red and white Miami U. athletic suits, so American. This melting pot our Slovene ancestors helped stir created a gorgeous male specimen. To think some of these very same men will walk the killing field, sometime - somewhere, is a tragedy, Saturday, March 9 Met with Del and Edmund Gazelle, their son Jeff and his new bride in s btauurui home on the banks of Lake Hartwell, Georgia. Also saw the new home of cousin Ellen Resnik, daughter of the late Frank Resnik, also on Lake Hartwell and in Ed’s neighborhood. Our family is becoming south-emized with a Slovenian twist. Dinner was Italian spaghetti 'a la Del. It’s a specialty of Del’s and her sauce gets better and better. After dinner we sat around a welcome fire enjoying its warmth and the joy of family reminiscences. We were glad to hear that Edmund sings barbershop and is a devout member of his church choir. Sunday, March 10 On the road again at 6:00 a.m. Awoke to a rooster’s crow announcing the birth of another crisp day. The dawn broke through in crimson-rose colors and after awhile the sounds of Bach’s Aire on the G-String accompanied us through a winding highway out of Hartwell, Ga. Now the scenery was lush with southern pines arising out of the swamplands which eventually become skeletal roosting branches for hawks, crows and vultures. The roadsides are broad and clean, kept picked up by local jail house prisoners who wear telltale white and black striped prison garb. The South iš also home to a multitude of junk yards - old autos mostly. 1 told husband, Reg, I had to stomp around in these junk yards because I’m looking for a 1936 Pontiac hood ornament. I kept pointing out junk yards but the driver kept driving by! Well, just wait, whenever I find one of those ornaments. I’m not likely to share the prize. Antique book lists valuation of these old ornaments at $9,500. Madison, GA, route 129, a gorgeous side trip to view well-preserved antebellum homes. These Civil War era structures sprinkled in their whiteness and appeared picture-perfect. One was for sale, but I’ll bet it’ll be sold only to an “old Georgia family” resident. if you auesticr. a Georgian as to his heritage, he’s prone to state, “Well, suh, my family’s from Georgia.” They don’t seem to accept descent from European immigrants. It is still cold, windy, but the white dogwoods and pink Japanese cherry and Spanish moss remind us we are in the deep south. The rain is back and the cold won’t quit. On the radio and TV, storm and flood warnings persist. What a package deal. Finally Florida and more rain. Registered at a lovely motel in tiny Trav-eras and set out to see Aunt Wilma Guzell-Schussler. Aunt Wilma and Uncle 9 Leonard look great and lead a quiet unhurried retirement near Leesburg, FL. Leonard fishes and Wilma does exceptional hand work. She crocheted a floral-designed tablecloth for her dining room and at my request, made a baby afghan for a friend of mine in New York. K rtNOf" Truck Drivers Would Need A Neck Like This To See Your Car In Their No-Zone (NAPS)—The No-Zone is the area around trucks where cars “disappear” into blind spots, greatly increasing the possibility of a collision. So staying there is asking for trouble. There are more than 250,000 crashes involving oars and trucks every year. Many could be avoided by keeping these important points in mind: * Trucks have much larger blind spots on both sides than cars do. * Trucks also have deep blind spots directly behind them. If. you’re driving behind a truck and you can’t see one of its side view mirrors, the truck driver can’t see you. . * Truck drivers sometimes need to swing wide to the left to safely make a nght turn. Give them plenty of room. Don’t cut in between them and the curb or shoulder to the right. * Trucks can’t stop as quickly as cars. When passing, look for the whole front, of the truck in your rear-view mirror before pulling in front of the truck, then...don’t slow down. An informative brochure about the No-Zone is available free by calling the No-Zone hotline at 800-644-1744. Some like it hot, but peas like it cool and moist — when it comes to soil that is. You can start planting peas in March and through April. Early varieties are less sweet than late-maturing ones, but you get to eat them sooner. Like sweet com, peas taste best when cooked immediately. Snow peas are grown just like garden peas, but pick them as soon as the peas begin to form in the pods. Then you eat pod and all. Snap peas are a cross between garden peas and snow peas. They are scrumptious eaten raw, steamed, or stir-fried. Naturally you eat the pod and all, so you can say they are a snap to prepare. The Olympic symbol consists of five interlocking rings that represent the continents of Africa, Asia, Australia, Europe, and North and South America. Rings are black, blue, green, red and yellow. The flag of each nation competing in the games has at least one of these colors. 13 There is no wholly satisfactory substitute for brains, but silence does pretty well. In commemoration of the visit of Pope John Paul II to Slovenia in May, new bronze doors are being installed in the Cathedral in Ljubljana. The main door will picture the 1,200-years of Christianity in Slovenia. Included will be the baptism of Carinthian princes, Gorazd and Hotomir; Gospa Sveta; Saint Modest, Saints Cyril and Methodius, the oldest Slavonic document (Slovenian Brizinski Fragments); Turkish raids, the first Slovenian printed book and translation of the Holy Scriptures, Slomšek, Baraga, the mass executions of patriotic Slovenian Home Defenders in Kočevski Rog by the Communist revolutionaries, and the emancipation of Slovenia. Above all of these will be the portrait of the pope himself. Pope John Paul II. Contributions are being sought from all Slovens around the world for the completion of this project. The Vatican too is on the Internet. During the Pope’s recent cold, numerous well-wishers sent messages of concern, even their favorite recipes for medication. Slovenian faithful also sent Pope John Paul II their best wishes. Two of the 4 bells commemorating the Pope’s visit in Slovenia were recently poured at the 110-year old bell factory in Zalec. Veselimo in radujmo se. Aleluja. Velikonočni mir odrešenih in vse dobro vam želi dr. Mati Vinkotova, sestra Fani- ka, Jožetova žena Angela in Marija, žena Jakoba, so bile zaprte, Fanika 7 let. Člani stranke so znotraj stranke organizirajo v interesnih združenjih in forumih. V začetku novembra 1995 so poslanci SDSS vložili v parlamentarno proceduro predlog zakona o spremembah in dopolnitvah zakona o volitvah v Državni zbor. Da ga pevci, prijatelji in poslušalci cenijo in spoštujejo, so pokazali s tem, ko so mu ob osemdesetem rojstnem dnevu pripravili banket, napolnili dvorano in njemu v čast priredili prijeten večer. TV3 ga do konca redakcije svojim gledalcem ni predstavila, zato ga v celoti objavljamo. BRICKMAN & SONS FUNERAL HOME 21900 Euclid Ave. 481-5277 Between Chardon & E. 222nd St. - Euclid, Ohio Misijonska srečanja in pomenki 1126. Vesele in blagoslovljene velikonočne praznike želim vsem našim misijonarjem, celotni MZA in vsem njenim pionirjem v Ameriki, Kanadi in raztresenim po vsem svetu! Erna Margaret Boltezar. R.I.P.! Za vse so darovale: ga. Francka Kavčič, Mississauga, $100; družina Katarine in Jožefa Kolenko, Etobicoke, $100; ga. Mara Osredkar, isto-tam, $20. Mnogo znancev in dobrih prijateljev sem tam ohranil. $450 in Joseph Banducci US $350. Osebno so mi ob srečanju v Torontu darovali za razpolaganje po potrebi v misijonskem sodelovanju: družina Charles in Vera Morrison kan. $250; Patrick Goan $100; Joseph Banducci (charities) $100 in družina Harry in Theresa Arts $50. Družina George in Bernice Cossett $40; Marijine sestre pri fari Čudodelne svetinje $20; ga. Josephine Luedey, ga. Dorothy Phillis ter Ronald in Theresa Russell, po $10. Gdč. Julka Zarnik $60 za enoletno članarino Prijateljev Radio Ognjišče. Ga. Katica Dreu $10 v Clevelandu za velikonočni dar in enak desetak gdč. Robert in Kay Wayda $15. Po $20 Frances Hočevar, Vincent in Mary Vrhovnik, Anica in John Tushar (ga. Anica leta veliko pošte sama osebno krije), John in Angela Zapušek. Štefan in Jožefina Zorc ter Christine Zaic po $25. Ivan in Mira Berlec $30. Tončka in Frank Urankar $50. EVEN THE NBA CAN'T GIVE YOU THIS MANY THRILLS FOR 4 QUARTERS All it takes to win Super Lotto Is luck! Istočasno so bili posve' čeni v duhovnike vsaj trije njegovi sošolci, za katere iščemo dobrotnike. Rev. Charles Wolbang CM St. Joseph’s Seminary 65 Mapleton Rd. P.O.
