June Price was a protege of Schubel’s since her teen years. She said Schubel gave her many opportunities even though she did not speak Slovenian. “He was a great music man and fine teacher,” said Price, a mezzo soprano, who sang the lead in Strauss’ “Gypsy Baron” opera in 1940 and in 1957 sang “Carmen,” and many other roles all in the Slovenian language. “He was an extraordinary friend by casting me in the operas that meant everything to me at that point. Everything I always wanted to do in music, Mr. Schubel coached me and helped me with the Slovenian. Some of my happiest moments were working with him, when music was number one. “He was ‘it’ for Slovenian music. He had all the culture in him - acting, singing, and directing. He opened his heart with his voice and then we did all we could for him. At out-of-town concerts, Schubel was like Yankovic, people always mobbed him.” As a member of both Triglav mixed chorus and Glasbena Matica, Frank Culkar heard Schubel sing only once at a Glasbena concert, but it was memorable. “I heard a quartet of Schubel, Eddie Kenik, Frank Bradach and Wencel Frank sing. It was so powerful. I’ll never forget it. Schubel was a true artist and true Slovenian. You could not find anybody better to direct. His heart was in it. This was his life. He didn’t care if he ate - it was music seven days a week. “He loved our music, and he found his true love in Cleveland at all the Slove- Kres seeks dancers Attention parents of children in kindergarten through eighth grade: If you are interested in having your child perform in the Kres 45tb anniversary performance on Saturday, September 11, please contact Nadia Domanko at (440) 944-9780 nian homes. He was truly h3ppy surrounded by singers like June Price, Eddie Kenik, and Cecilia.” Members of the Slovenian Junior Chorus, who are now established adults, have a special affection for Schubel, the father/grandfather figure. Joe Valencie was five-years-old when he first sang for Schubel. “He was kindly, generous, and he really liked working with the young children in the chorus,” said Valencie, information director for Cleveland State University. “Children liked 50% Discount for New Subscribers Thanks to a generous benefactor, a campaign for new subscribers to the American Home (Ameriška Domovina) weekly newspaper begins today. He was the most influential figure in Slovenian music in the U.S.” Valencie added Schubel should also be remembered as the first Slovenian to appear on television ever. In 1931 in New York City, Schubel performed wearing a Gorenska noša (Slovenian costume) and sang Bod’ Moja. Barbara (Turkovich) El-ersich was only four-and-one-half-years-old when she became a member of the Circle 2 Slovenian Chorus, and sang under Schubel’s direction until age 15. “I think he inspired me to go on in music and to have a love for good music and ethnic music,” said Elersich, a music teacher at Orchard Hollow Elementary School in Mentor. “He was such a sweet man who was gentle with the children and had a good sense of humor. I think of him often when I’m teaching my choir in school and wonder how he would have done it.” Schubel took the nucleus of the fine singers, who had been performing operas at the Slovenian National Home in Cleveland up to the 1940s, to the next level. Under his direction and using his translations into the Slovenian language of several classic compositions, Glasbena Matica chorus presented fully-staged and costumed productions with symphony orchestra of “La Traviata,” Carmen,” “Rigoletto,” “Pagliacci,” “Cavalleria Rusticana,” “Tales of Hoffman,” “Gypsy Baron,” “II Trovatore,” “Sister Angelica,” and “Mary Magdalene.” Each program drew audiences of more than 1,000 people. As director of the Slovenian Junior Chorus, Schubel had a natural gift in teaching children. He directed several musicals with the children’s chorus, such as “Cinderella,” and “Hansel and Gretel,” both at SNH and the Slovenian Society Home in Euclid. , Schubel also directed his choirs in many out-of-town programs, in Pennsylvania, Michigan, and Illinois. He especially enjoyed traveling to Chicago and Waukegan with the Glasbena Sextet, consisting of Carolyn Sudan, June Price, Anne Sa-fred, Cecilia (Valencie) Dolgan, Eddie Kenik and Frank Bradach, which gave benefit concerts for the Slovene Home for the Aged in 1961 and 1962. Budan, Bradach, and Safred have passed away. He was the catalyst who nourfshed the musical tradition of Slovenians in America from the time of his first solo concert tour of the United States in 1928 and (Continued on page 4) AMERIŠKA DOMOVINA, APRIL 22, 2 Jim’s Journal By Jim Debevec Read with interest Anton Žakelj and Bob Debevec’s reminiscence about fishing in Lake Erie. In my younger days, I too sought the perch (or blue pike), which some folks said was the most delicious fish they ever tasted. Every few weeks we would walk from our home on E. 174 Street to Euclid Beach Park, about a mile away. It was a wonderful family amusement park with a nice variety of rides for both youngsters and adults. For people coming from other parts of town, it was a very convenient location because the streetcars and buses ended up right in front of the place, then turned around for the return trip. A lot of the young adults today are going to have a difficult time believing this, but the entrance to Euclid Beach Park was absolutely free. That’s right, if you just wanted to walk around and/or relax, you could do that. And on Mondays -well, that was something special. Some Mondays were called nickel days. Every time you wanted to go on a ride, you would hand the attendant in front of the ride the number of tickets required. For example, the Thriller or Roller Coaster may have been 4 tickets; or the “Bug” 3 tickets. Each ticket cost a nickel. But on Mondays, every ride was one ticket. — What a bargain! Once inside, after a full day of having fun and excitement, you always saved a couple of tickets for the “frozen whip.” The whip was the best tasting ice cream in the world. We leisurely walked back home licking the rich, creamy ice cream, which sadly to this day no one has been able to duplicate. Once the park closed down, the recipe for the ice cream was never saved. Today you can purchase the famous “Hunphrey’s Pop Corn” and candy kisses, but no Euclid Beach ice cream. Oh, some stores advertise that it’s just like Humphrey’s, but it’s not. There was also a penny arcade. Yes, some machines in there actually cost a genuine penny. And usually, as hard as you tried, you didn’t get anything. The machine ate up your money; ironically today, there is no machine that takes pennies you just accumulate them until your pants fall down. As you notice, kids today need a penny arcade. Anyhow, at the back of the park, was the shore of Lake Erie. There was a small sandy beach to go swimming, or rent a row boat, or you could walk on the long pier that jetted way out into the lake. What we youngsters often did was take a can of worms and our fishing poles and walk through Euclid Beach Park and go on the pier and drop our lines into the water to do some fishing - and it was entirely free. On rainy evenings, us kids would run around the neighborhood with flashlights searching people’s front lawns for sleeping nightcrawlers. We would grab one put it in a can, then search for some more. We didn’t believe in paying good money for bait when it was there for the taking. We stored the worms in Mr. Bohinc’s home-made wooden container he constructed in his back yard for that very purpose. It was about 5 feet square and filled with dirt, grass clippings, leaves, and what he claimed were the worm’s favorite food - used coffee grounds. When we wanted to go fishing, all we had to do was put a pitchfork into the worm box and turn over the dirt and there would be hun-* dreds of worms crawling around, ready for use. What we used to catch on the Euclid Beach pier was perch. When they were hitting, you could catch dozens during a single sitting. Personally, at that time, I didn’t eat fish, so 1 gave them to Mr. Bohinc who cleaned them and stored them in the freezer to be eaten at leisure all year round, especially on Fridays. Sadly, as Bob and Anton mentioned, either the pollution or the accidentally imported mussels ate or destroyed the best-tasting fish to ever come out of Lake Erie. Yes, those were the days when as youngsters you didn’t need organizedac-tivities and a fat bankroll to enjoy your summer vacation. I went home, got some breakfast, and put on work clothes. At 9:15, I began my job at Z&W. I unloaded 10-feet long steel bars from a truck, and then helped in various areas. Lunch was from noon to 12:30, and at 3:30 we were done. All day I was soaked through with sweat, not really tired, but my back hurt. And so my dream became a reality. I got a job in a Slovenian factory, close to home. I don’t have to take the streetcar, which costs money and which I don’t like. A neighbor told me that Z&W is a good factory; and they must be good - after all, they do play the radio during lunch time. But the work is exhausting. Will I be able to endure? In the evening, Kocjan, Sršen and Zupančič visited. Kocjan wasn’t able to get a job because he doesn’t know any English at all. They said a war started today in Korea. Soon all the factories will have plenty of jobs. Wednesday, June 21,1950 I didn’t fall asleep until 4 this morning, but I got up at 7, went to work and had a good day. They had a coffee break at 8:30 (8 cents a cup). I helped wherever I was needed. Tony, the foreman, asked me to clean hundreds of small steel bars. When I got done cleaning them, he asked me to put them in boxes. When 1 was done, he asked me if I had counted the bars. I said, “No; you didn’t ask me to count them.” - “But you should know that yourself,” he said. He considered asking me to take them out to make sure there were a hundred in each box, but he decided it was cheaper to just leave the extra bars in each box. He was mad and said, “Leave it!” At 4 p.m., I came home, ate supper and fell asleep. I woke up at 7 in the evening and, thinking it was morning, got up quickly and got ready to go back to work. My wife pointed out that it was still evening and suggested I go back to sleep. Friday, June 23,1950 Hot today. In the morning I carried long heavy steel bars from the warehouse to the factory. I set them next to 8 long machines that are called Automatic Screw Machines. The machines are designed for automatic production of small pieces in large quantities. In the afternoon, I was cleaning the machines until Tony gave me some easier work for the last hour: sorting aluminum bars, which are much lighter than steel. Except for that last hour, I was soaked with sweat. The heat and the heavy work completely exhausted me. It was during these personal appearances > Schubel earned the title of S Slovenian nightingale or § “Slovenski slavček.” He performed in 86 concerts in 45 ,o5 cities in 14 states. He was ^ equally at ease singing oper- 2 atic arias or Slovenian folk songs. The Slovenian folk songs were notable because Schubel would be dressed in a Slovenian national costume. His expressive rendition of “Mamica Moja” or Mother Mine always brought tears to the eyes of listeners. No doubt he gave extra feeling to the interpretation of this particular song because Schubel began his career as a six-year-old child, the youngest of 10, singing duets with his mother Marianna, 54, in a church choir near his hometown of Rodice, by Domžale, Slovenia. His musical talent brought him to the attention of the Ljubljana opera in 1924. Schubel not only sang roles, but also directed some of the productions in his four years with the opera. Some of the highlights of Schubel’s music career include recording for Columbia Records in the late 1920s, music talent scout and manager of Associated Concert Bureau. One of the young artists he featured at Carnegie Hall was pianist Van Cliburn, who was 13-years-old at the time. Schubel settled in Cleveland permanently in 1949. His studio apartment in the Slovenian Home was a convenient location for singers to drop in for rehearsals and for his practice as a voice teacher. He also was surrounded by a thriving neighborhood, which at that time offered a lot of camaraderie through the Slovenian-run businesses and friends who lived nearby. Schubel would stop by places such as Kol- lander Travel, operated by his friend August Kollander, Sr., the law offices of Joseph Zorman and Edmund Turk, and of course, late night Pinochle games with Josie Ambrosic, Marie Orazem, and Marica Telich at the Zorman residence on Addison Road. Schubel was looking forward to directing Glasbena Matica chorus on a concert tour to Slovenia in 1966, but he died a year before this dream would have come true. Glasbena did make the tour in memory of the late director, under the direction of Valentina Fillinger. A commemorative plaque created by Schubel’s nephew-by-marriage Boris Buzan was unveiled at the home of his birth in Rodice, and the Glasbena Matica chorus sang at the ceremony. The Slovenian Junior Chorus, which was directed by this writer (Cecilia Valencie Dolgan) following Schubel’s death, also visited Schubel’s birthplace in 1993. The late director’s original home had been razed to make way for a large, new home. The children’s chorus sang and participated in the rededication ceremony, as we unveiled the plaque at its new site. This past summer when the Children’s Chorus sang for the California Federation of SNPJ Lodges in Fontana, California, the group met Schubel’s niece, Pauline Buzan, who participates in the activities of the Slovenian community there. She had the highest praise for her uncle. She said after her father passed away in New York where they were living, Schubel cared for her like a daughter, for which she is most grateful. Schubel was a magician who could transform a meat Cutter, hair stylist, bank teller, plumber, or into an unbelievably capable opera singer. He taught them how to act on stage and sing, and was a friend who had a sympathetic ear. Having first met Schubel when I was 14-years-old to study piano with him, and later singing in the grand opera productions, my impression is that Schubel truly loved people and could get along with anybody. His talent was being able to convey his deep feelings for the music to inspire others. He was rich in friends. In Gobetz’s book, the late Senator Frank J. Lausche is quoted as follows. Lausche said, “I know of no one who contributed in a greater degree to the respect that non-Slovenes in Cleveland had for the Slovenian people. Schubel labored unselfishly and sacrificially in presenting to Clevelanders and Ohioans the image of the Slovenes in their richest attributes in the cultural field. “There will be many Slovenians who will have passed into the world beyond leaving estates of greater richness, but none will have built for themselves a more durable monument than Anton Schubel, though, materially, he died in want.” Mara Hull writes about Slovenia Mara Cerar Hull of Lakewood, Ohio wrote a book called Poletje Molka. St. Michael, PA T 7 Tips On Solving Weighty Problems (NAPS)—Sometimes it can take a long time for people to lose the weight they gained over the holiday season. What they need to know is that even a modest reduction of weight (5-10 percent in those who are obese) can limit the risk of potentially fatal diseases, such as high blood pressure, diabetes, cancer or heart disease. Consulting a physician to help set realistic goals should be the first step in any weight reduction program. To make weight loss a little bit easier, here are ten tips from Shape Up America!, an organization dedicated to helping Americans get into better physical condition. 1. Talk to your doctor to determine the right exercise program for you. Then build up your program gradually. For example, if you want to walk every day, start walking ten minutes a day and then add five minutes a week until you’re up to 30 minutes. 2. Be realistic. Don’t give up if you don’t start losing weight right away. Even with a weight loss of 10 pounds, health benefits have been shown. Modest weight loss is easier to maintain over time. 3. Patience, patience, patience. It may take time, so shoot for one or two pounds a week. 4. If you normally exercise outdoors, pick an indoor activity when the weather is bad. 5. Improve your eating habits. A registered dietician or a doctor can help you figure out what’s best for you. For example, you may have to balance large lunches by eating small dinners. Instead of eating food directly out of a box, pour a moderate portion on a plate or bowl and put the box away. 6. Eat well-balanced meals that stress portion control and include a wide variety of grains, fruits and vegetables. 7. When cooking, boil, bake, roast, steam, grill or stir-fry using as little oil as possible. This helps reduce your fat intake. 8. Instead of eating food directly out of a box, pour a moderate portion onto a plate or bowl and put the box away. 9. Fill your plate once and don’t go back for seconds. 10. Work with your health care provider to determine your body mass index (BMI). If it’s above 30—or above 27 and you have conditions such as high blood pressure or diabetes—talk to your doctor about weight control treatment options. If you and your doctor determine drug therapy is right for you, remember it is. an adjunct to, and not a substitute for, healthy eating and increased physical activity. It brightens my day-. —Jennie Mramor Euclid, Ohio Spinach vs. depression Depressed? You may be lacking folic acid, a B vitamin found in dried beans, orange juice, green leafy vegetables such as spinach, and nutritional supplements. Much research suggests that folic acid helps regulate mood, says psychiatrist Jonathan E. Alpert of Harvard Medical School. Depressed patients, he says, consistently have low blood levels of folic acid, and the greater the deficiency, the worse the depression. Such people are also less likely to respond to antidepressant drugs. Alpert says correcting a serious or borderline folic acid deficiency may help relieve depression and/or make antidepressants work better. Usually 400 micrograms daily of folic acid is sufficient to bring blood levels up to normal, experts say. At that time Slovenia was under Austro-Hungary rule. She died on Aug. 13, 1992, eight months short of 100 years. She left a family of 12 children! She did not have any brothers or sisters. She came to America in October of 1912 and first settled in Sheboygan, Wis, later moving to Milwaukee where she again met my father, Frank Volovsek, who also was from Gornji Grad. They were married on July 25, 1914 in West Allis, Wis. He died Jan. 24, 1968. They are both buried here in Willard, Wis., in Holy Family Cemetery. Incomplete article Editor, I am writing about the March 18th issue of Ameriška Domovina in the special section dedicated to the Slovenian National Home honorees. It was not complete. I refer to the Harry Buie (Brule?) article. His granddaughter Cindy was left out. In Harry’s words she is a wonderful person. I might only say what I know is that she is very interested in the Slovenian culture and she is only 16 years old. I will also say in my words that she is a beautiful and intelligent person who can give the Slovenian community a whole new perspective. I hope you have room to correct this small error. —Edward Sedmak via Internet EDITOR’S NOTE: We are happy to hear that Cindy is interested in Slovenian culture. We welcome her enthusiasm and input. We regret that her name was somehow omitted from the article. As far as the Federation section of the American Home printed on March 18 is concerned, the articles are the entire responsibility of the individual Slovenian Homes and the Federation of Slovenian National Homes. Each article is written either by the honoree him/herself or by a representative of his/her hall. We set aside one ful] day for each hall to proofread their articles and ads. It is their responsibility to check for accuracy and completeness. Newburgh-Maple Pensioners News The Newburgh-Maple Hts. Petra v Rimu prisluhnil nenavadnemu pogovoru. Tri dame odra, Metka Zalar, Musi Coffelt in Marta Futej, gotovo niso potrebovale velikih napotil za svoje vloge, saj so s prepričanjem in vživeto predstavile mlade in rafinirane uslužbenke potniških družb. Njihove vloge so moderne in današnjemu času primerne. Režiserju Felixu Gaserju in vsem, ki so pripomogli k uspehu igre Na tankem ledu, Julki Zalar, Slavku Stepecu, Mattu Grdadolniku, Ivanu Jakominu, Augu-stu Dragarju, Francetu Hrenu in Tonetu Ovseniku, gre topla zahvala. Slo- vensko občinstvo v Clevelandu je ob njej doživelo veselo in zadovoljivo nedeljsko popoldne. Mara Cerar Hull narode izganjajo, pobijajo in preseljujejo. Hkrati so Izetbegovičev in muslimanski položaj oteževali bosanski Hrvati s svojo Herceg-Bosno. Kocbekom zašli mednje in jim delali druščino. Revolucionarji so vseskozi hujskali proti čaršiji in kraljevini, proti farjem in žan-darjem. Kraljevi oficirji so bili zanje oporode monar-hofašistov in so jih skušali čisto onemogočiti. Časi so ljudje, so rekli nekoč. 14) MUSIC REVIEW Calmly and Coolly, a Virtuoso Returns By ANTHONY TOMMASINI črpanj v klavir . ,v uPorabo ' kolil‘o, dolgo Most pianists with talent and ambition yearn to be signed by managers and recording executives who can foster major careers. The Slovenian pianist Dubravka Tomšič, who gave an extraordinary recital at Alice Tully Hall on Monday night, could probably have had such a career. But she chose a more modest path, which is why she lacks the renown she deserves. Ms. Tomsic (pronounced TOM-shitch) gave her last New York recital in 1954 at Carnegie Hall as a 14-year-old prodigy. The reviews were ecstatic. An astonished Arthur Rubinstein, who was in the audience, took her on as a student for two years. Then Ms. Tomsic returned to her native Ljubljana, where for the next 30 years she essentially contented herself raising a child, teaching at the local conservatory and having a successful regional career as a pianist. Since 1989, when she returned to the United States for a recital at the Newport Music Festival (which sponsored this Tully Hall recital), Ms. Tomsic has been branching out internationally, winning glowing reviews • and ardent admirers. Ms. Tomsic is a pianist who takes some adjusting to. Her technique is incomparable. She can effortlessly dispatch the most dauntingly virtuosic music, as she did with Book II of Brahms’s Variations on a Theme of Paganini, the final work on Monday night’s program. Yet everything in her playing happens from the elbows down. Her body and facial movements are so minimal she looks almost uninvolved: she could be a woman at a checkout counter mindlessly passing items through a scanner. Those who favor impassioned music making may find her playing a bit cool. 1 would describe it as Apollonian. She stays out of the way of the music in the best sense, and uses her technique to reveal structure, inner voices and rhythmic intricacies. The Allegro Vivace of Beethoven’s hu- The Slovenian pianist Dubravka Tomsic morous Sonata in G (Op. 31, No. 1) was played with a fleet-fingered, bracing clarity that made the music seem just shy of dangerous. An exquisitely colored, undulant performance of Debussy’s “Images,” Book II, was followed by a thrilling, sensual account of the composer’s “He Joyeuse.” Surely the inhabitants of this particular island of joy were doing a lot more than eating and drinking. Following a refreshingly lucid performance of Brahms’s late, ruminative Fanta-sien (Op. 116) came the dazzling account of Brahms’s Paganini Variations. Most pianists wear the exertion involved in playing this work like a badge of honor. Ms. Tomsic, untroubled by the difficulties, made music of it, revealing the w himsy, playfulness and elegance that are there but seldom heard. Her debt to Rubinstein seemed clear in one of her encores: an arm-blurringly brilliant account of Vma-Lobos’s “Clown Doll,” a Rubinstein favor he. But her teacher could not have vanquished Chopin’s hellbent Etude in C sharp minor the way Ms. Tomsic did. It was one of several times the audience leapt to its feet. Ms. Tomsic may finally get the international career she never had. This time she seems to want it. V panelu III-5, The Complexity of Identity of the Migrants vs. a One-Dimensional Notion of National Identitites, so bili trije referati in sicer: Marina Lukšič Hacin je govorila na isto temo kot naslov panela, Duška Kneževič Hočevar z referatom “Shifting of Identities in the Past of the New State Border between Slovenia and Croatia”, Irena Godina pa z referatom “The Slavic Idea as an Alternative Identity of Slavic Nations”. V diskusijski sekciji panela VII-7 so slovenski znanstveniki sodelovali pri obravnavi dveh problemov: Zlatko Šabič in Milan Brglez z Ljubljanske univerze sta govorila na temo: “The Fox and the Raven: Asymmetry and Ambiguity Rule as the European Union and Hungary Renegotiate the Mrgins of Europe”, Olga Šupek (University of Texas at Tyler) pa je imela referat “Us vs. Other: The Slovene Case of the Dynamics of a Nation’s Identity”. Enakopravnost in normalnost hitro izginja. Nimajo niti pravic vojnih invalidov. Žrtve komunističnega nasilja, požigov, ropanja in izgonov po zakonu niso vojne žrtve in nimajo nobenih pravic. Pravna država Slovenijia priznava status vojaških pokopališč z državnim varstvom partizanskim, italijanskim, nemškim in drugim okupatorskim grobovom, grobov slovenskih domobrancev in drugih enot protikomunističnega odpora, (dalje na sir. 16) Misijonska srečanja in pomenki 1277.
