Vse razven države Kansas so doslej glasovale z veliko večino proti prohibiciji. -o- Kaj pomeni dosedanje poskusno glasovanje o predsedniških kandidatih Washington, 30. marca. — Paul Hansom in Alice Olson,; jdva, ljubimca, sta hotela iti v i gledališče. Unijski delavci so kričali da bodo ustanovili svoje lastne unije, ker jih vodja McLaughlin neče priznati. Delavci so predložili sledeče zahteve vodstvu unije: pravica nadzirati knjige svojih krajevnih organizacij, pravica zbirati se in delati postave, pravica začeti z lastno unijo. Ta določba velja do 1. julija, 1934. 18 bančnih uslužbencev in 6 odjemalcev so' v naglici stisnili v ozadje bančnih prostorov, nakar so začeli ropati blagajno. Odnesli so za $50,000 v gotovini in $150,000 vrednih papirjev. Bili so zelo natančni. Prezrli niso drobiža in odnesli zadnji cent iz blagajne. Odnesli so $400 v centih, $500 v nikljih in $1000 v kvod-rih. Nato so pa. nastopili igralci v svojih vlogah: Mr. John Snežic, Joe Wallege, Milan Valentine, John Brantin, Frances Brantin, Tony Glasic in Dennie Radan. Vsi so bili za vsako dejanje na-gradeni z salvami aplavza. Janez: "Da, in še k temu zaprisežen lovec!" Tujec: "A kako divjačino imate v teh krajih?" Janez: "No, gamze, srne, zajce, divje peteline, rušovce in še drugo drobnarijo." Janez: "Seveda, to niso vaši vrabci in vaše lastovke! Tujec: "Slaba ste me razumeli. Janez: "Tam nekje v Afriki. Ali ne?" Tujec: "Pogodeno! Sedaj me pa poslušajte, kako lovimo v puščavi. . . " Janez: "Kaj mislite tudi slona ustreliti?" Tujec: "Seveda! čemu me motite?" Janez: "Milijon namalanih! Pod vrženi so ji posebno debeli ljudje. Debelost in diabetes greste vštric. Diabetes (izgovori: dajebi'-tiz), slovensko: sladkorna bolezen, nemško: Zuckerkrankheit, je motnja, telesnega presnavlja-nja, kar povzroča kupičenje prevelike množine sladkorja v krvi in izločevanje sladkorja v scal-nici. . ." "On? Niti ne sluti tega!" "Kaj ? . ." "Skoraj gotovo bova potovala naravnost v Išim in tam nama bodo okoliščine določile nadaljno pot." "Tatari kana Feo-farja so preplavili vso semipa-latinsko pokrajino in že nekaj dni z vso naglico prodirajo ob i cki Irtišu. Treba bo hiteti, ako hočete pred njimi priti v Omsk." Z. JSfetos OUR GOAL! DOUBLED MEMBERSHIP IN 1932 On the SDZ Soap *Bojc S. D. Z. ELECTION CAMPAIGN OPENS TOMORROW ACID TEST TOMORROW, the acid test for for the English-conducted lodges of the Slovenian Mutual Benefit Association begins. A full six months will pass before any definite decision can be reached as to whether or not they have successfully passed muster or whether they have been found wanting. During that period of time, the Esdeezee Election Campaign, especially prepared for the young folks of the organization, and so heartily sponsored and suported by the supreme board members, will be in full swing. "" Whether or not, the lodges will be able to come up to ex pectations, remains to be seen. Should they fail—and we even hate to consider the possibility —blame can fall ort no one but the members themselves. Ample time has been given them for preparation; ample incen tive in the way of cash awards and special prizes has been supplied by the supreme board, and ample ballyhooo for the race has been the goal of the SDZ Page ever since the an nouncement of the membership caihpaign. But we feel there will be no need of trying to locate or place the blame, for we are positive the English-conducted lodges will come through in a manner even greater than expected. We feel confident the individual members have sufficient pride and loyalty not only for their own particular lodge, but for the entire Slovenian Mutual Benefit Association, as well, to leave no stone unturned in their effort to make a commendable showing in this, their first own membership drive. Chance for All AN HONEST attempt has been made to make the campaign as attractive as possible for every member in the organization, regardless of whether or not he holds any office. Much time, money and effort has been expended in an effort to rouse the young members activty in their fraternal organization, and it is only fair that the members give the leaders whole-hearted cooperation in this matter. For the mutual benefit of all, it is well that everyone works hand in hand. A president, cabinet, governors, senators, congressmen and mayors are going to be elected in this campaign. Who will they be? An early start and a good one is half the battle. See to it that you and your lodge get off on the right foot and make a creditable showing in the very first week of )the campaign. Don't wait till the race is half over before you start to take an active part in it. Get out your soapbox now, and let the world know that you're a candidate in the Essdeezee Election Campaign and it's going to take a mighty good man to beat you out of office! Get the jump on your opponents by turning in a heavy ballot in the opening week. Get out in front and stay there! LET'S GET GOING! -o- YOUNG MEN'S DANCE BOOSTED BY THIRD VICE PRESIDENT CARD TOURNEY TO BE HELD AT MARCH MEETING OFFICERS AND BOARD HOLD RALLY TONIGHT AT SLOVENIAN HOME By JOE MUZIC Members of the Modern Crusaders were urged to attend J,he March meeting, but this request did not have any effect whatsoever on the members. At least that is the way the writer saw it when he attended at the last meeting. It is important that all members be present at every meeting, as there are subjects that effect the whole lodge to be debated and voted upon. Summer is coming. What does this mean to you? Does it mean just another dull warm season? Or does it mean outings, swimming, parties, baseball and hikes?. And when you think of hikes, your mind usually recalls that little nook surrounded by mother nature where you ate your lunch at the mid of day. So come on, Modern Crusaders, lets go to the meetings and voice your favorite events, then when your event or all events come, lets not slack but lets show our spirit and attend. There was a motion passed at the March meeting in effect for those members getting their lodge dues paid by the lodge. Those members are requested to come to each monthly meeting and ask the secretary for the payment of their dues. , At this April meeting the lodge will endeavor to bring entertainment and refreshments for everyone. It has been the writers good fortune to be able to give the readers advance information pertaining to the entertainment. As far as the writer knows, the Modern Crusaders will conduct a pinochle tournament for those who do not dance, and dance music for those who do. So whether or not you dance, you are bound to have a good time. Modern Crusaders come on and show your stuff and bring your friends along. Last but not least, don't forget 100 per cent, in our membership drive! Plans for Central Committee, in and About Cleveland, Progressing Rapidly By JOE A. ROSA Third Vice President Interlodge baseball is sure to be one of the main attractions this spring and summer. The fact that the SDZ members have too few English-conducted lodges to support a league of its own should not deter you from supporting the teams that will be organized by these lodges. April 15 has been set for the date of the SYMC "Pre-Base-ball Season Dance." Since the receipts of this dance will go toward outfitting the boys baseball paraphernalia you should make it a point to be there. Give the boys a hand, and maybe they'll reward the SDZ with the Interlodge gonfalon—whatever that is. ■ Interest in the Essdeezee election campaign is increasing day by day. Slow to get started, these Slovenian lads and lassies, but when once startec there's no stopping them. And it ssems that they have started. * * * Sudden thought: April 1, the day that marks the opening of the campaign, is also All Fool's Day. There's a swell chance to fool those doubting Thomas' who says it can't be done. Sign up a new member to prove that it can be done. * * * Another thought: If every male member who brought in a new member were rewarded with a kiss from one of the fairer members, how many members would be hurt in the rush to bring in new members? Hi t- fc Central committee plans are progressing rapidly. Presidents and secretaries of lodges operating in Cleveland and the immediate vicinity will receive letters sometime next week in what the plans will be briefly outlined and their cooperation requested. Pep Talks and Stump Speeches to Be Part of Meeting on Eve of Campaign A pre-campaign meeting and pep party will be held tonight, the eve of the Essdeezee Election Campaign, at the Slovenian Mutual Benefit Association headquarters in the Slovenian National Home building, St. Clair Ave., for the officers of all the English-conducted lodges and supreme board members. Final preparations for the conduction of the campaign will be outlined to the lodge officials at this time. Pep talks and campaign speeches by' the political aspirants and supreme board members will give the meeting the aspect of a typical political meeting. Cash prizes and the special awards for winners in the race will be discussed, as well as plans for the formation of a group council of the English-conducted lodges. It is hoped that not a single lodge official will fail to be present as much valuable information will be given out. It is likewise imperative that all lodges start the campaign on an equal footing, so that none will enjoy an advantage. APRIL 2 DATE OF DANCE HELD BY SDZ CLUB A mammoth dance, commemorating the 19th anniversary of the Cleveland Slovenian, No. 14 SDZ lodge, will be given Saturday, April 2, in the lower hall of the Slovenian National Home, St. Clair Ave. Though the foundation day of the organization is March 9, because of Lent, the celebration was postponed and a more pompous festival was planned. Red Brancel and his Rythm Rioters have been engaged for the dancing, and Louis Drab, who is said to be the Slovenian Bing Crosby, will offer a series of his best crooning numbers. The refreshments will be plentiful and varied, while the admission for the big anniversary social will be only 35 cents. All the SDZ members and their friends are invited to join the Cleveland Slovenians at their anniversary party. HEAVY BALLOTING EXPECTED IN . INITIAL MEMBERSHIP DRIVE OF ENGLISH-CONDUCTED LODGES YOUNG MEN ANNOUNCE DANCE TICKET SALE The Sunday (27) issue of the esteemed news carries a picture of the "Naš Dom," Lorain (O.) singing society. It is gratifying to know that most of the members of this choral unit are also members of the SDZ. The Open Mail ATTENTION JOE A. ROSA Sometime ago, you let out a yell from the Southern district of the State, now I'm hoping that someone will let out a roar from the West, and that a call from the wild will emanate from the North, I'm going to start a stampede right here in the East, and let the members cf the English-conducted lodges know just where we stand. Hey, wake up. What's the matter with all the English-conducted lodges. So far I've read every issue of the SDZ page, and I am greatly surprised to see that almost the entire page is written by the editorial staff. I certainly would like to know, what is the matter with the members of these lodges, haven't they any color, pride or what is commonly referred to as plain gutts? Have you read the article submitted by Joe A. Rosa sometime ago? Do you recall that in that article he asked if lodge secretaries were merely names and addresses or were they real agitators for Alright, you bashful literat-eurs, how about a little news for the SDZ Page? You might as well give in right now because this won't let up until every last lodge is represented on this page. How about it? And shame, shame, double shame, everybody doesn't know your name! their lodge and the SDZ? Now please don't misunderstand me, personally I bear no grudge against the secretaries, I know that they are preoccupied with other duties of their office. However, I still believe that they could find sufficient time to contribute articles for this, their own paper. My belief is that other officers and members should really be the ones to v contribute interesting articles and items. Remember what Barron Collier once said: "Constant and tireless advertising brings action." I am pleased to state, that the Eastern Stars, manage to at least place one article every week in the SDZ News. As far as the campaign is concerned, I sincerely hope that it will be a success, and I want all of you to know that you will receive plenty of competition from the Eastern Stars. Michael Lah Jr., president. The 43 pens and pencils that will be distributed as prizes should write many a line for this page. In the meantime any old pen or pencil will serve the purpose just as well. Don't you just dread the day when you will find your past, present and future exposed to the gaze of an unsympathetic world? Yeah, I'll bet you do. Tickets for the SYMC "Pre-Baseball Season" dance can be obtained from any member of the club, which is presently going through a period of reconstruction that will again take their place among the leading active Slovenian organizations of Cleveland. The committee in charge of the gala event is hard at work to make this affair as elaborate as any ever held at the Slovenian National Home. Frank Yerse, Harold R. Lausche and Joey Prosek are the members of the committee. Eddie Simms' quartet is ibooked to play and the date is April 15. the 218 219 Campaign Reports Must be Turned Into New Headquarters at Slovenian National Home by Monday Noon of Eacli Week " * Tomorrow the polls through the mythical country of Essdeezee will be thrown open to the voters in the national election campaign. Political experts of the country predict heavy balloting in all states as the members of the English-conducted lodges of the Slovenian Mutual Benefit Association seek to elect the rulers of this new nation. Polls will be open for a per-® ' iod of six months, during which time, it is hoped, sufficient votes will he east to stamp this year's membership drive a decided success by the supreme board and staff of the SDZ News sponsors of this new campaign. For fully a month plans have been made for the conduction of the campaign in each of the eight states' making up Essdeezee and as the zero hour draws near, everything appears in readiness for the voters to put their leaders into office. According to the outlined plans, the presidents of the eight English-conducted lodges are candidates for the presidency of Essdeezee. The defeated presidential candidates will make up the president's cabinet. In the respective states, the vice president, secretary, treasurer and recording secretary oppose each other for the office of governor. The runner ups in the gubernatorial race will be named the senator and representative of that state, in the order they finish. In each city under one of the candidates for governor, every citizen will vie with fellow members for the office of mayor. In order that all candidates for office may have an equal chance for office, regardless of the size of the particular state or lodge, election quotas tor .each candidate have been set ,up, each one based upon the number of members in the lodge. Besides the usual membership campaign, cash prizes, the campaign committee of the supreme board has chosen special awards for those elected to office in the campaign. A beautiful fountain pen desk set suitably engraved with r .the name and office of the winner and with the SDZ crest, will be formally presented to the winner on SDZ Day at the Slovenian National Home, St. Clair Ave., on Nov. 6, 1932. Parker fountain pen and pencil sets will be awarded the eight winning governors. These, too, will be similarly engraved. Fountain pens, engraved with the name of the winner and the emblem of SDZ, will be given to all of the mayors put into office by the coming election. As has been explained before, each new member brought into the lodge will have the voting power of three ballots; one for the presidential candidate, one for the gubernatorial candidate and one for mayor. All returns must be made to Essdeezee election headquarters ters Monday of each week, regardless of whether or not any new members have been obtained. Complete election returns will be carried in each edition of the SDZ News. Let's make the big showing expected of us, and make this Essdeezee Election Campaign go down in history as the most successful membership drive ever conducted by the Slovenian Mutual Benefit Association! 246 24? 270.00 1 248 285.00 249 .80 I 250 100.52 i 251 300.00 252 316.50 253 150.00 254 541.00 255 717.00 256 235.17 257 210.00 258 260.10 259 120.00 260 120.00 261 180.00 262 124.07 263 348.00 264 210.00 265 181.15 266 48.00 267 375.00 268 150.00 269 270.00 279 201.00 300.00 210.00 450.00 144.00 175.00 115.50 180.00 1287 228.00 ! 289 22.50 290 246 19301 Cuy. 2,000.001 2,000.00 6 120.00 247 1930 Cuy. 2,100.00 2,100.00 6 126.00 248 1930 Cuy. 3,350.00 3,350.00 6 201.00 249 1930 Cuy. 1,000.00 1,000.00 6 45.00 250 1930 Cuy. 3,750.00 3,750.00 6 225.00 251 1930 Cuy. 2,000.00 1,000.00 1,000.00 6 107.83 252 1930 Cuy. 4,000.00 $ 27.87 4,027.87 6 330.36 253 1930 Cuy. 2,900.00 2,900.00 6 218.37 254 1930 Cuy. 2,500.00 2,500.00 6 150.00 255 1930 Cuy. 3,500.00 500.00 3,000.00.6 195.92 256 1930 Cuy. 3,450.00 3,450.00 6 156.50 257 ^930 Cuy. 3,350.00 3,350.00 6 201.00 258 1930 Cuy. 2,700.00 2,700.00 6 162.00 259 1930 Cuy. 3,000.00 3,000.00 6 180.00 260 1930 Cuy. 9,000.00 9,000.00 6 370.00 2611930 Cuy. 3,000.00 3,000.00 6 180.00 262 1930 Cuy. 2,750.00 2,750.00 6 165.00 263 1930 Cuy. 6,000.00 6,000.00 6 270.00 264 1930 Cuy. 2,400.00 2,400.00 6 144.00 265 1930 Cuy. 1,500.00 1,500.00 6 70.25 266 1930 Cuy. 3,750.00 2,750.00 6 112.75 267 1930 Cuy. 4,150.00 4,150.00 6 249.00 268 1930 Cuy. 5,000.00 5,000.00 6 300.00 269 1930 Cuy. 1,400.00 1,400.00 6 84.00 270 1930 Cuy. 3,600.00 3,600.00 6 216.00 272 1930 Cuy. 4,000.00 4,000.00 6 240.00 273 1930 Cuy. 1,500.00 1,500.00 6 90.00 274 1930 Cuy. 3,000.00 3,000.00 6 180.00 275 1930 Cuy. 2,000.00 2,000.00 6 120.00 276 1930 Cuy. 2,800.00 2,800.00 6 126.00 277 1930 Cuy. 2,500.00 2,500.00 6 150.00 278 1930 Cuy. 3,000.00 3,000.00 6 135.00 279 1930 Cuy. 3,200.00 3,200.00 6 192.00 280 1930 Cuy. 4,000.00 200.00 3,800.00 6 258.00 281 1930 Cuy. 2,200.00 2,200.00 6 139.70 282 1930 Cuy. 4,500.00 4,500.00 6 150.00 283 1930 Cuy. 2,600.00 2,600.00 6 161.97 284 1931 Cuy. 3,000.00 3,000.00 6 177.00 285 1931 Cuy. 2,900.00 2,900.00 6 167.72 286 1931 Cuy. 3,850.00 3,850.00 6 218.84 287 1931 Cuy. 2,300.00 2,300.00 6 112.70 289 1931 Cuy. 120,000.00 120,000.00 5 2,210/45 2901931 Cuy. 1,900.00 1,900.00 6 291 1931 Cuy. 2,600.00 2,600.00 6 69.33 292 1931 Cuy. 3,900.00 3,900.00 6 104.00 293 1931 Cuy. 2,200.00 2,200.00 6 32.26 294 1931 Cuy. 2,100.00 2,100.00 6 19.60 295 1931 Cuy. 1,500.00 1,500.00 6 Skupaj |$726,813.02|$146,277.871 $26,779.37 $846,311.52 $42,705.72 Mladinski oddelek 49 1931 Cuy. $2,800.00 $ 2,800.00 6 $ 84.00 196 1931 Cuy. 4,000.00 4,000.00 6 120.00 197 1928 Cuy. $10,000.00 10,000.00 6 459.92 222 1929 Cuy. 4,500.00 4,500.00 6 270.00 223 1929 Cuy. 3,500.00 3,500.00 6 157.50 271 1930 Cuy. 4,060.00 $160.00 3,900.0016 240.00 1288 1931 Cuy. 2,250.00 2,250.00 6 90.75 Skupaj $22,060.00 $9,050.00 $160.00 $30,950.00| $1,421.27 OUR GOAL! Illlllllllllllllllllllllllllllllillllllllllllllllilll Hay J- Grdina Setys Optimism and Violets Easter has come—and gone. In the minds of most of us Easter signifies a d?y in the year when serenity and happiness are at full tide. Introducing as it does one of the pleasantest seasons of the year, it offers an unsurpassed opportunity to bid farewell to the bleakness of winter. Unfortunately, economic conditions being what they are—to mention nothing of the decidedly winter weather, many have failed to realize the joy and bliss the day and season are supposed to bring. And if ever there was a time that we suffered a great need for real optimism, it is the present. We must get over looking down. Up 's Where we'll find the lights and the bright sky. Pessimism must give way t0 optimism, just as inevitably as depression must pass on to make room for prosperity. The true optimist is the one who, at '"is time of the year, goes out and suspects each patch of barren ground of having violet or crocus possibilities. He Keeps a weather eye open for the first bit of enlightening in the sky and the first bit of balminess in the air sets his blood to tingling and his heart to jhuniping. He is the first one to raise his voice and cry, "Spring is here!" ^ I 1VI llrifl,, 1 I, .. Mi ^nnn »Uri Similarly, the pessimist sees not the v'iolet or crocus, but rather harbors thoughts of poison ivy. The balminess 'n the air does not awaken him to new it only recalls ugly memories of P®st head colds. He is the sort of professional mourner and joy killer who, at a picnic, can look into the fairest sky and heartily prophesy rain. Look for the Sun This tiine of year is symbolic. Sjurdy souls, who recognize the present economic chaos without succumbing to it, 'eel that now, with spring here and the sounds of summer's gaiety in the offing, 'he approach of of an industrial rennai-®ance may well be listened for. The blackest of clouds, the chillest wind, '»e heaviest downpour, does not prevent Jhem from looking for the proverbial: silver lining." They refuse to accept 'he fact that sales grounds must be barren indefinitely and that industrial s^'es must be too long overcast To 'hem it is but the question of patiently parking time until the hour of sadness "as passed before the blazing sun of Prosperity and good cheer. However, it does take a certain in-d°mitability of spirit to cry "Spring!" 'n the face of chill frosts and grayness. 'et he who does so loses nothing, and ™ay gain much in that he is ready lor 'he seasonal transition when it comes, ®.nd that he has imparted perhaps some httle extra joy to his neighbors. The Rental suffering prior to a visit to the dcntist is usually greater than the actual pain undergone while on the chair. ?nd thus it is that much of the suffer-lngs of the past period have been more Cental than physical. Yet if there can possibly be no escape ■roni physical pains, let us at least spare ourselves the mental anguish, by 'aising our eyes to the heavens and (^'th conviction in our hearts cry out, Pring IS here!" Celebrate Event at Jugoslav-Slovene) Dinner Dance at Willie's Gardens The guests at the Jugoslav (Slovene) Club dinner-dance at Wille's Lake Shore Gardens Monday evening were indeed awestricken when they found out that a brand-new bridal couple had budded in their midst in the guise of Miss Helen Satkovich and Mr. John Gornik Jr. Mr. and Mrs. Gornik Jr. and Miss Honey Gornik and Robert Satkovich arrived at the affair as innocent looking as everybody else, but before long it was learned that the quartet had" made a call at St. Mary's Church and a marriage took place. Then Mrs. Frances Lausche Urankar, one of the hostesses, after supplying the bewildered guests with the necessary rice, made the announcement, and following that a merry nuptial party seemed to be in vogue. There were the conventional congratulations and well-wishes and even a solo dance by the marital pair. The couple attended the nuptial mass which was read for them Monday morning at St. Mary's Church and the marriage ceremonies in the evening were witnessed only by the two families. Father Hribar officiated. A dainty pink lace wedding and dinner gown, offset with blue slippers, gloves and turban, made Miss Satkovich a most lovely bride. Her corsage was of lilies of the valley and tiny bridal roses. Her attendant, Miss Honey Gornik, bridegroom's sister, was attired in blue lace with black accessories. Miss Satkovich is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Anthony Satkovich, 15810 Parkgrove Ave. Mr. Gornik is the son of Mr. and Mrs. John Gornik Sr., 6217 St. Clair Ave. He is the president of the Slovenian Young Men's Club and a popular young man about Cleveland. He is a graduate of John Carroll University and an active alumni member. Since Miss Satkovich hasi oeen a member of thejJugoslav^Slovene). Admission 35 cents. -0--- CONCERT A SUCCESS DEMOCRATS HAVE LARGE CROWD AT VICTORY DANCE The ladies on the reception committee' looked attractive in their fashionable gowns, as did the gentlemen in their tuxedos. Both the upper apd lower halls were crowded with victory'celebrators shortly after the doors were opened. The number of pretty girls in attendance made people wonder whether a beauty contest was on the program also. Victor Svete's orchestra and Eddie Simms were exhausted, jas the miniature hours of the morning grew closer. They say poets are born, so are policemen, and Al Kotnik and Anthony Hlabse are two of them. They preserved order with remarkable amateur results. The social register included Mr. Eckerinan, editor of tlj^ Waechter upd Anzeiger, German daily; Milton Grossman, 10th Ward Leader; Dr. James Se-liskar? Louis J. Pire; James Reyant. assistant police prosecutor; and Judge Lillian Westropp. The dance was a merry victory affair, the keynote of which was sociability, good-will and the manifestation of a continued spirit of victory. Dr. William Lausche will accompany the singers at the piano and Mr. Frank Lausche will give the English interpretation of the program and make the announcements. The International^Night programs are being launched in order to acquaint the public with the folk songs and characteristic music of the nationalities which are participating. The lateness of the broadcast hour is favored because at that time there is the least compound station interference. But Far From Being 'Champ Horse Shoe Pitcher John H. Invitations come pouring in through the mails and Albin has a mighty tough time filling all those requests "to be present at the party given in honor, etc." Last week the gentleman was favored with bids from Girard, Lorain, Detroit and Akrop to be present at celebrations held there, to say nothing of three local parties. Unfortunately, he does not possess a dual nature, and can't take them all in. "Beanie," you know, is quite a harmonica player. Perhaps that explains his popularity—or is it his Ford? -0- DARVAS ALUMNAE DANCE Miss Mildred Augustine, who won first prize and the title of "Miss Polonia" in a popularity contest held at the Polish National Home recently, will be the guest of honor at a victory dance which will be given by the Darvas Alumnae, of which she is a member. The affair honoring the Slovenian young lady will take place on Sunday, April 3. Miss Rose Erste, the secretary of the alumnae, will be one of the hostesses. By JOE A BOSA Let me be within a mile of a drunk and he will be sure to find me. They always pick me out to be their little playmate. Maybe it's my little white dog. Anyhow— A gorgeously waxed individual crashed the gates of an informal party the other evening. I didn't know him, but the rest of the gang did and welcomed him with open arms. "He's a card," they informed me, "regular life-of-the-party." "Oh, yeah?" I sneered back at them. I'd seen more than one life-of-the-party turn into a pretty wet smack- And I settled back in my corner to drink some more brown liquid that might have been water at some time or other, but wasn't now. * * * But I didn't stay set very long. He spied me. A curious gleam entered his , eye; his face screwed up in an expression of ecstasy—he'd found his little playmate. I went hot and hotter, but 1 finally pulled myself together. Just like a martyr going to his death. "D'ya wanna rassle?" he trilled. That stumped me; nobody had ever asked me that before. "No," I gulped, "thanks! Not this week." "Dontcha wanna rassle?" he almost sobbed. I remained firm—and embarrassed more than somewhat. "Don't NOBODY wanna rassle?" he asked pathetically. It seemed that nobody did, so he decided that maybe it was time to take another little drink. While he did this, I settled back to my glass, congratulating myself on my lucky escape. * * * Right then I learned that lesson about the last laugh. My playmate was back again. " "Where d'ya get 'em?" he wants to know. "Where did I get what?" I came right back quick as a flash. "Your green shirt and red necktie, where d'ya get 'em?" he giggled. Fan me, Filbert, I'm fainting. And just make it another marshmellow 011 toast. I never owned a green shirt and a red necktie both at the same time, but I can't tell him that. "Yoohoo, Hortense," he falsettos, "come, look at the daisy with the green shirt and red necktie," and he toddled off. But he's right back again. "D'ya wanna rassle?" No, I didn't "wanna rassle," and I told him so in no uncertain words. • .1 : r "Oh, goody, goody, Hortense wants to rassle." He started to take off his coat, but his arms got tangled up in his sleeves and I'm all for letting him stay that way. Being a peace-loving man, I'm even for tossing him out on his left ear, but the gang thinks otherwise seein' as how they're all having a laugh at my expense. He finally got untangled, his coat off and his collar loosened. "D'ya wanna rassle?" he asks again. » * » "You better not wrestle with him," somebody warned the soak, "he's a professional. He and Jim Londos have been trading the titje for the last five years." That stopped him. He's just an amateur, he claims, and wouldn't jeopardize his amateur standing for anything. Which makes me feel very happy indeed, and I'm almost willing to forget that he called me Hortense. And I would, too, if he hadn't insisted that 1 trade my green shirt and red necktie with him. » * * That gives you an idea of what 1 have to put up with. Maybe I better join the S. P. C. A. Figure it out for yourself. * * » Some smarty sends me a clipping of my column with the penciled caption: You and Oscar Odd or Local Boy Makes Good. >* * * APRIL FOOL! Mervar's Hall, Corner East 60th Street and Bonna Avenue Saturday Eve, April 2, 1932 EDDIE SIMMS' ORCHESTRA ADMISSION 35c Inter/rat Ail-Star Contest Closes at Midnight, Monday, April 4-th Christening With the baseball season just around the corner (no ,1 don't mean the same corner that the hackneyed prosperity is hiding around), local amateur addicts will again follow the daily reports from the local Joe Perry league. Every baseball lover in Cleveland knows about the "outlaw" circuit. Outlaw because it is not affiliated with any particular organization, but exists on its own merits, but few know its origin. An interview with the prexy of the loop, Jim "Fat" Marsh, enlightened us, but let him tell it in his own words. "It was about six or seven years ago, that I was playing with the White Motors in Class A. We were playing the St. Stanislaus bunch on Gordon No. 2 and "Lefty" Kahoun was pitching and Joe Fleck behind the plate for the Saints. There was keen rivalry between the two clubs as "Lefty" struck out 17 of our players the Sunday before at Woodhill Park. "The first inning saw the first three of my teammates fan, and the big crowd which encircled the entire park pictired another big day for the southpaw. When I came to bat in the second, Fleck was kiddin' me about hitting one to Joe (Perry's Monument). I grit my teeth and on the third pitch' I cracked one into right center field that stopped rolling right at Perry's feet. When I crossed home plate I told Fleck that that homer was for 'Joe.' Well, since then I have been president of the Peiry League, which has been meeting for the past six years at Gordon Park." So there you are, folks, i'irst-hand information about the history of the famous league, which is headed by the well-known Marsh. His call, to the some 60 or 70 members, will be issued as soon as the diamonds are in shape, in the meantime they are confined to indoor work and long walks. Interfrat Hop April 9 The annual Interfrat dance has been scheduled for Saturday, April 9, at the Slovenian National Home. All those that attended the previous dance know what a good time is and that their attendance made it possible for the league to promote another successful basketball year. The entire proceeds of the dance are used to defray the expenses of the ioop, such as are incurred by the hiring of referees, scorers and timekeepers.. The annual banquet, which is to be held ^ypril 14 this year, is also made possible by the support given at this dance, so all Interfrat fans are asked to co-operate at the only annual affair sponsored by the league, which is the sole source of income. Meyer "K. O." Christner, Akron rubber man, personifying Age, will attempt to halt the winning streak and fistic aspirations of his younger adversary, Eddie Simms, Cleveland's foremost contribution to the heavyweight select circle. Whether or not the veteran Christner, with all his ring craft and experience, will be able to check the sensational winning splurge of Eddie, who, full of the fire and ambition of youth, has skyrocketed right up into the front ranks of the nation's mitt slingers, is a question that will be decided tomorrow night at the Eques-trium when the two socksmiths tangle in a six-round go. The Rubber City warrior, needless to say, is by far the toughest proposition' that Eddie, with but 13 professional fights tucked under his belt, has been called upon to face. Although Christner is 36 years of age, and just about ready to fade out of the picture into obscurity, he is still young enough to provide a stiff hurdle for the Slovenian lad to leap over, on his way to ring fame and immortality in the sock market. During his long and successful (from a lucrative standpoint) career EDDIE'S BARRIER TO FAME IN INTERLODGE PLAY-OFF SERIES DEMSHARS CAPTURE THREE MORE GAMES IN NORWOOD LOOP Here's the latest obstacle that Eddie Simms will have to hurdle on his way to ring fame and glory. It's Meyer "K. O." Christner, Akron ancient. The two will swap punches headlining Walter Taylor's boxing show at the Eques-trium tomorrow night, and they should provide plenty of action for ye boxing fans. DOUBLE-HEADER ON INTERLODGE WEEKLY CARD SVETEKS CLOSE B LEAGUE WITH A TRIO OF WINS Local Interlodge bowling fans will be treated to four hours of continuous keg-ling next Sunday, April 3, when the A tossers meet to roll off their postponed ?ames of last week. Each team will roll six games, with thq first matches billed to open at 1:30 p. m. sharp. The regular scheduled skirmishes will begin promptly at 4 o'clock. The league-leading Spartans are confronted with two mediocre clubs, and unless they should become lethargic they should find no trouble with the Collinwood Boosters or the Sokols. The latter outfit may provide the stiffer opposition of the two. In the meantime the George Washingtons will be engaging Betsy Ross , and Clairwoods. ;If they whip the Flag-makers their hope for retaining the title \ will be bright, whereas a defeat would mean practical elimination. Complete schedule: Alleys 1 and 2: Boosters vs. Spartans. Alleys 3 and 4: Betsy Ross vs. George Washingtons. Alleys 5 and 6: K. S. K. J. vs. Comrades. On Friday evening, April 1, the Com-ra3es and Pioneers will clash in the Interlodge Basketball League semifinals for the honor of playing the Loyalites in a two-out-of-three series for the loop diadem. In the preliminaries the Craven Sport Goods meet the Loyalites and the Betsy Ross quint engages the Clairwoods. The winners will play the Loyalites Tuesday, April 5. Supporting that game will be the Angelone Restaurants and the Flashes. A kids' game will raise the curtain. -o- S.L.U URGE ATTENDANCE All members of Lodge No. 50 of the Slovenian Ladies' Union are urged to attend the monthly meeting to be held Thursday, April 7, at the St. Clair Bathhouse at 7:30 p. m. Plans for the coming dance are to be discussed and each member will be asked for her aid, in order to make the dance a success. Members are also asked to bring in any money resulting from the sale of tickets. Christner has boxed, to list a few of his better known opponents: Johnny Risko, Ernie Schaaf, Jack Sharkey, Jim Maloney, George Manley, Bud Gorman, Romero Rojas, Joe Sekyra, Arthur De Kuh and Paolino Uzcudum. As proof that he is not entirely impervious to a knockout punch, he has been kayoed by Jack Dempsey, Max Baer, Otto Von Porat, Primo Camera, Young Stribling and Mickey Walker. Physically he rates on a par with our own Eddie. He tips the scales at around 195 pounds and is 5 feet 11 inches tall. His chief offensive weapon is a hard right-hand punch. Both fighters claim victories over Frankie Wine, Barberton Slovenian. | Simms, in our opinion, should make a more creditable showing against i Christner than he did against Wine. Christner is what is known as a "stand-up" fighter, which means that he will offer more of a stationary target for Eddie's dynamic punches than Wine did. Eddie will enter the fray in a better physical condition than he has attained for his other fights. One thing is liable to detract from his offensive performance, however, and that is a pair of tender and soft maulies that he will have to be careful of. The injuries to his mitts were suffered when he tried vainly to kayo Wine two weeks ago. Eddie, in our interview with him, is highly confident that he can successfully get by the Akron menace. Eddie Bojack, hard-hitting Slovenian welterweight, gets an opportunity to avenge a defeat he received from Eddie Latko sometime ago at the Equestrium. LAURIC FINISHING SECOND Heinie Laurie, East High's speeding dash man, finished second in the 50-yard dash event last Saturday night at the C. A. C. meet staged at Public Hall. Heinie, neighborhood Slovenian, boy, who shattered several records while attending Willson Junior High, is one of East's most consistent performers. -0-- SLOVENIAN STAR INJURED Joe Kuhel, Slovenian first-sacker with the Washington Senators, was relegated to the sidelines last week when a batted ball struck him on the hand as the Nats were working out at their training base in Biloxi, Miss. Joe Judge will re'place Kuhel. , The two leather pushers put up a whale of a battle in their first get-together, with Latko getting a close and disputed decision. This time Bojack, who is one of the most popular battlers to show at the West Side arena, figures to so decisively whip the rugged Latko that there won't even be the least inkling of a doubt as to the winner. Two weeks ago Bojack, in his latest start, kayoed Jack O'Britton of Akron in five rounds and Eddie Latko punched Allleys 7 and 8: Pioneers vs. Clairwoods. Alleys 9 and 10: Sokols vs. S. Y M. C. Alleys 9 and 10: Clairwoods vs. George Washingtons. -0— GRDINA & SONS NEED ONE TILT The 1931-32 Interlodge B bowling champions, Svetek Strugglers closed the league's play in fine form as they copped all three tilts from their brotherly lodge, the Merchant Strugglers. The Sveteks ended the season with 44 wins and 19 losses for high .704 average, this being four games better than the mark established by the Clairwoods, their nearest foes. J. Tolar finished in fine style as he lambasted the pegs for 191, 160 and 253 —604. The latter game gives him second place in the high individual standings along with the weekly suit cleaning prize. A 531 by Laurie was the losers' best effort. By winning all three from the Holy Name Juniors, the Clairwoods assured themselves of spco.nd' place. In the middle game the Š. D. Z: quintet topped the Juniors by two pins, as it ended 859 to 857. Budan starred for the winners. Betsy Ross took third place as they won two from the Rover-Utopians in the other scheduled melee. Two 200 scores by Tekavec could not swing the verdict for the victims. A 210 by G. Kovitch was best for the Flagmakers. The Spartan-George Washington postponed tilt will be rolled next Sunday to officially close the league's play, although the outcome of this match will have no bearing on the final standings. The Spartans are lodged in sixth place, while the Tree Choppers occupy the mat position. The customary winners in the Norwood Home League came through again in the local kegling circuit last week. Six tilts were rolled off. The league-leading Demshar Builders kept rolling on victory-bound as they copped three from the Soeder & Sons. Larry Slogar, with 612, and Ox Kromar, with 611, were the Demshar luminaries. Schneiderand Kellerstarred for the losers as they drew a 2490 total. The Builders blasted a 2813. Tony Grdina, with a 207, led the A. Grdina & Sons to three wins over the Superior Home Supplies. Skoda did best for the losers. The Grdinas hit 2029 and the Superiors shelled 2540. A 219 middle chapter by Jimmy Ste-pic featured the Klauser Dentists' whitewash win over the Kremzar Furnitures. Kogoy's 205 and Charlie Lau-sche's 207 were other highlights as the Dentists rolled a 2690 total. A 2214 was kegled by the losers. Bokar included 210 and 218 games in his 595 set as the Bukovnik Studios took three from the Kremzar Furniture^. Tomazin's 201 and Marincek's 211 were the losers' strongest bids for victory. Despite 211 and 214 games by Pre-bles, a 621 set by Charlie Debelak and a 200- effort by Leskovec, the Gornik Habs lost a brace of games to the Za-krajsek Undertakers. F. Yerse and B. Alic sparkled for the Zaks. The Habs smashed out a larger grand total, however, by dumping »over 2729 kegs, as compared with the Morticians' 2682. Udovic larruped the lumber for a 646 series comprised of 205, 235 and 205 games to lead the Soeder & Sons to a double win over the Norwoods. Joe Pozelnik, with 214 and 203 chapters, scintillated for the Norwoods as they scattered 2553 maples. The Soeders felled a 2657 aggregate.
