Prav te uvodne besede vsebujejo nekaj temeljnega: Jezus je »zacel pošiljati« apostole. Zacenja se apostolsko poslanstvo (misijon), odposlanje prve skupinice misijonarjev, dogajanje, ki se brez presledka in prekinitve nadaljuje vse do naših dni. Doslej je Jezus sam oznanjal božje kraljestvo, ucenci pa so hodili za njim, ga poslušali in se ucili. Sedaj pa so tudi oni »odposlani« in tako postanejo v pravem pomenu »apostoli« (odposlanci). Gre za uvod v cas Cerkve, ki ga lahko razumemo kot cas misijona. Markov evangelij se koncuje s prizorom, ki klice v spomin ravno dogodek, opisan v današnjem odlomku, vendar je tam predstavljen veliko bolj slovesno: Rekel jim je: »Pojdite po vsem svetu in oznanite evangelij vsemu stvarstvu!« (Mr 16,15). Opisano dejstvo ima velikanski pomen, saj se s tem rojeva apostolsko izrocilo. Misijon ni bil iznajdba Cerkve ali zahteva, ki bi izhajala iz vere šele v casu po veliki noci. Današnji evangelij pove, da je Jezus že pred veliko nocjo zacel pošiljati apostole. Še nekaj besed o »navodilih« ali o »vsebini« misijona. Sestoji se iz dveh prvin: iz besed in dejanj. Bolj kot na besedah je bil poudarek na dejanjih, ki imajo dvojno znacilnost: skladnost oznanjevanja za življenjem oznanje-valca in preroška dejanja v prid ljudi. Med znamenja, ki morajo odlikovati misijonarja božjega kraljestva, Jezus postavlja na prvo mesto bratsko ljubezen in medsebojno obcestvo. Sv. Gregor Veliki piše: »Pošilja jih po dva in dva, da bi s tem priporocil medsebojno ljubezen, saj ta ni mogoca med manj kot dvema.« Misijon mora prejemati svetlobo od najvišjega evangeljskega pricevanja, ki je izraženo v besedah: »Po tem bodo vsi spoznali, da ste moji uc enci, c e boste med seboj imeli ljubezen« (Jn 13,35). Nobena rec tako ne škoduje oznanjevanju evangelija kakor nesoglasje, tekmo-valnost, nevošcljivost in pomanjka-nje ljubezni med oznanjevalci. Poleg osebnih lastnosti, to je doslednega kršcanskega življenja, se omenjajo dejanja, v katerih se izraža moc nad drugimi: »Dal jim je oblast nad necistimi duhovi ...; izgnali so veliko demonov in veliko bolnikov mazilili z oljem ter jih ozdravljali.« Izraz »necisti duhovi« je v tistem casu oznaceval bolezni in oblike zasužnjenosti, danes lahko s tem izrazom poimenujemo številne idole, ki »obsedajo« cloveka, ga zasužnjujejo in odtujujejo sebi: npr. duh porabništva, ki obseda velik del današnje družbe. Postali smo sužnji nešteto umetnih potreb, ki ne potešijo naših želja, ampak, ustvarjajo nove in nove želje. Zato smo nenehno nezadovoljni, nevošcljivi in nepotešeni. Misijonar božjega kraljestva more z mocjo Jezusove besede izgnati te duhove. Zato pa mora govoriti s preroškim Duhom. Samo Duh vstalega Kristusa nam more dati dovolj moci za to, da se ucinkovito bojujemo proti tem stvarem in jih razkrinkavamo. Njegov Duh vzbuja v cloveku, ki mu prisluhne, cut za pristno notranjo svobodo. Vsega tega ni mogoce napraviti z levo roko. Zaceti je treba prav od zacetka. V kršcenih moramo prebuditi zavest, da so preroško ljudstvo, poklicano iz teme k luci, da bi oznanjali cudovita božja dela (prim. 1 Pt 2,9). Priprava jutrišnjih oznanjevalcev mora dobiti vedno bolj duhovni in karizmaticni pecat. Poudarjati je treba vlogo Svetega Duha pri oznanjevanju Kristusove besede. Prerok Amos nam je opisal, kako je bil poklican v preroško službo, ko je bil še pri svoji credi: »Pojdi, prerokuj mojemu ljudstvu!« Bog ni prenehal pošiljati prerokov svojemu ljudstvu. A položaj je danes boljši, kot je bil v Amosovem casu, ker je vmes prišel Jezus. Jezus tistih, ki jih pošilja, ne pušca samih, ampak jih spremlja s svojimi znamenji in navzocnostjo. Evharistija je ta Jezusova navzocnost, ki prenavlja misijon in krepi pogum tistih, ki morajo oznanjati evangelij ali pa ga sprejemati. Nedelja med letom Prejšnjo nedeljo smo premišljevali o liku misijonarja, danes pa se naša pozornost usmerja na podobo pastirja. V tem pomenljivem premiku se lepo kaže, kako se dejansko poraja in razvija kršcanska skupnost. Marko pri pisanju evangelija najbrž ni imel v mislih tega prehoda, zanesljivo pa ga je hotela poudariti Cerkev, ko je izbirala besedila za današnjo božjo besedo. Današnji evangelij nam daje vec opornih tock, ki so nanizane vzdolž njegove poti z enega brega Tiberijskega jezera na drugi breg. Dogodek je preprost in poln vsebine, zlasti ce si predstavljamo, da se je zgodil v istem letnem casu, v katerem ga beremo in razlagamo, to je v poletni vrocini. Ko so se apostoli vrnili z misijona po okoliških vaseh (gl. prejšnjo nedeljo), so se zbrali okoli Jezusa in mu pripovedovali o vsem, kar so ucili (prvo misijonsko porocilo v zgodovini Cerkve!). Bili so srecni (prim. Lk 10,17: »veseli so se vrnili«), obenem pa zelo utrujeni, saj jih Jezus povabi, naj odidejo z njim na samoten kraj in se nekoliko odpocijejo. S tem dobimo nekoliko vpogleda v razmere, v katerih je živel Jezus. (Mnogo ljudi je prihajalo in odhajalo, tako da še jesti niso utegnili.) Ko so prispeli na drugi breg jezera, so opazili, da je množica ljudi uganila njihov namen in pred njimi prišla tja. Ni se cuditi, ce so ljudje peš prej prišli na cilj kakor pa apostoli v colnu. Lahko si predstavlja-mo, da so si že sredi jezera privošcili nekoliko pocitka, da so le pocasi veslali in morda kakšno uro tudi ribarili. Ko Jezus opazi množico, ki ga pricakuje, se ne razburja zaradi ponesrecenega nacrta, ampak mirno spet zacne uciti ljudi. »Ko se je Jezus izkrcal, je zagledal veliko množico. Zasmilili so se mu, ker so bili kakor ovce, ki nimajo pastirja, in jih je zacel uciti mnogo stvari.« Ob tem nam postaja razumljivo, kaj pomeni trditev, da tradicija (izrocilo) ni nic drugega kakor Sveto pismo, ki ga beremo v Cerkvi in ga bere Cerkev. Današnje bogoslužje ne dodaja božji besedi nicesar novega, ampak jo le podanašnji in postavlja v dolocen okvir. Tako jo osvetljuje z novo lucjo in napravlja bolj oprijemljivo, kakor da bi razlomila kruh besede in ga razdelila množicam. Ce gledamo na današnjo božjo besedo iz tega liturgicnega zornega kota, se v celoti izkaže kot beseda za pastirje in o pastirjih. Govor pastirjem se zacenja z Jeremijevimi besedami v prvem berilu: »Gorje pastirjem, ki pogubljajo in razganjajo ovce moje paše ... Vi ste razgnali moje ovce ... in niste skrbeli zanje.... Sam bom zbral ostanek svojih ovc.« Zadnje besede razlocno kažejo na evangeljski odlomek, ki opisuje, kako Jezus (pastir, ki ga je napovedal Jeremija!) skrbi za ovce. Tako vstopamo del govora, namenjenega pastirjem, ki postavlja v središce zgled Jezusovega delovanja. Le ta vsebuje dve osnovni prvini: skrb za množice in skrb za prihodnje pastirje. V današnjem evangeliju se Jezus izkazuje kot idealen škof. Z veseljem se dolgo mudi na samem pri svojih »duhovnikih«, pri tem pa niti za trenutek ne pozabi preostale crede in je takoj pripravljen pustiti vse in pohiteti k ljudem. Prve evangeljske besede govorijo o Jezusu, ki se s svojimi apostoli odpravi v samoto, da bi se odpocil in skupaj z njimi molil. Zacenja se tisti del evange-lija, ki opisuje dogodke od odhoda iz Galileje do prihoda v Jeruzalem. Jezus v tem obdobju domala ves cas porabi za to, da oblikuje skupino ucencev, ki bodo po njegovi smrti voditelji in pastirji skupnosti. Ne oddaljuje se od množic, ampak na drug nacin poskrbi zanje: poskrbi za prihodnost božjega kraljestva. Danes bi rekli: skrbi za prihodnost Cerkve. Torej tudi v tem pogledu se izkaže za pastirja v najboljšem pomenu besede; je »veliki pastir«, kakor ga imenuje sv. Peter (1 Pt 5,4). Pri tem oblikovanju prihodnjih voditeljev skupnosti Jezus menjaje daje poudarek na akcijo (razpošlje jih v misijon) in na kontemplacijo (na stik z množicami in na samoto z njim). Medtem ko so sami z njim, jih uvaja v molitev (ob eni takih priložnosti nauci ucence ocenaš: prim. Lk 11,1 sl.) in jim razlaga skrivnosti kraljestva (prim. Mr 4,10 sl.). Jezus s svojimi »duhovniki« ne ravna kot z zunanjimi sodelavci, ampak jih ima za prijatelje (Jn 15,15: »Ne imenujem vas vec služabnike, ker služabnik ne ve, kaj dela njegov gospodar; vas sem imenoval prijatelje«). Na ta nacin polagoma izkoreninja iz njih duha najemništva, namesto tega pa jim vliva duha pastirja, to je cloveka, ki je pripravljen za ovce in za božje kraljestvo dati svoje življenje (prim. Jn 10,12 sl.). Kako se Jezus vede do množic, ki so pred njim prispele na drugo stran jezera? Ne kot kakšen poslovnež, ki bi se strogo držal svojega urnika in bi ljubosumno varoval svojo zasebnost. Tudi ne kot clovek, ki kar naprej drugim predava. Njegov prvi odziv je namrec »ganjenost« - in to je tisto, kar prevzame celotno bit navzocih ljudi, ne samo njihove glave ali duše. Markov stavek (»Zasmilili so se mu, ker so bili kakor ovce, ki nimajo pastirja«). Besede razodevajo neskoncno Jezusovo nežnost in klicejo v spomin neki drug njegov stavek: »Smili se mi množica, ker ž e tri dni vztrajajo pri meni in nimajo kaj jesti (Mr 8,2). Ti ljudje niso prišli zato, ker so se nasitili s kruhom, kot se je zgodilo ob neki drugi priložnosti (prim. Jn 6,26). Prišli so zato, ker niso imeli kam iti in so nepricakovano naleteli na nekoga, ki jim prinaša upanje. Jezusa presune pogled na »ponižano in razžaljeno« cloveško dostojanstvo teh ljudi, pred­vsem pa na njihovo hrepenenje po božjem kraljestvu in na pricakovanje tega kraljestva. Po pripovedovanju evangelija pomnožitev kruha neposredno sledi današnjemu dogodku in je nagrada za tiste, ki išcejo »najprej božje kraljestvo in njegovo pravicnost« (Mt 6,33). Lepo in soncno vreme je privabilo mnoge v park in nekateri so se nam pridružili tudi pri sveti maši. Hvala vsem sodelavcem pri bogoslužju, Kristjanu, ki je pripravil ozvocenje, Mary Ann, ki je organizirala bralce in ženam, ki so pripravile kapelico. Tokrat smo imeli tudi gosta iz Slovenije, Danila Siterja z ženo. Na koncu maše je pozdravil vse navzoce in jih za 11. julij povabil na predavanje o družinah na Brown's Line. ANNUAL SLOVENIAN SUMMER DAY CAMP at St. Gregory the Great Church Illustration Martin Niemöller was a German Lutheran pastor and theologian and a strong opponent of the Nazis before and during the Second World War. He wrote words that have been widely quoted; although they were written concerning the German Nazi regime, they still carry a powerful message even today: “First they came for the Jews and I did not speak out because I was not a Jew. Then they came for the Communists and I did not speak out because I was not a Communist. Then they came for the socialists, and I did not speak out because I was not a socialist. Then they came for the trade unionists and I did not speak out because I was not a trade unionist. Then they came for the Catholics, and I did not speak out because I was not a Catholic. Then they came for me, and there was no one left to speak out for me.” Whether or not one is a member of any of the groups mentioned is irrelevant; the stark fact is that the words can apply to each and every one of us. Will there be anyone to speak up on our behalf? A sobering question indeed. The question is a serious one and should lead us to ask ourselves, do I have the courage and conviction to stand up for others when they need my voice and my support? Often we give in to peer pressure and stand quietly by. Gospel Teaching Both the first reading from Amos and the Gospel passage from Mark have an important message for us, the Christian community today. In Amos we are presented with the prophet being lambasted by a crowd and told that he is never to speak in the way he has been doing again. Poor Amos, we may think. However, he does not need our pity; he is a man who utterly believes that what he says and does is just what he was told to say and do by the Lord. In the Gospel we witness how the disciples are given the power to anoint sick people and drive out demons from those who find themselves possessed. This power has come from Jesus and has been gift-ed to the apostles. These are people who can now minister as they have seen the Lord minister. There was nothing that could deter either Amos or the disciples from carrying on the ministry that had been given to them from a source much more significant and important than the opinion of the crowd. Even when opinion is gravely against them they have the confidence and the bravery to contin-ue the Lord’s business. They are people who keep their focus and somehow manage to continue be-lieving even at those moments where doubt and disbelief would be a more realistic option. Application It can often seem today that there is a rising intolerance towards Christianity and its message. In our society we are unlikely to meet the kind of per-secution that is faced by people of faith in some other countries of the world, but we may well en-counter ridicule or hostility towards our beliefs, as well as the apathy or disinterest towards religion that is shown by so many. Yet we are people who have been given a call, a vocation by the Lord. We know our identity as sons and daughters of God. We have been chosen and made holy by our God. The more we recognise these truths, the more we should not care what the “crowd” thinks about us. Being Christians today, as it always has been, is about being people of love, people of truth, people of justice, people of integrity, people of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. In this coming week let us be con-scious of the needs of those around us and let us see how we can be people who stand up for the other. Let us not stand quietly by when someone is calling out for help. Who knows, as Pastor Niemöl-ler’s words remind us all, the day may come when it will be me that is calling out and there may be no one to come and help me. Let us never give up liv-ing the life that we have been called by Jesus to live. 15TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME Response: The seed that fell on good soil produced a hundredfold. Second Reading Ephesians 1:3-14 Long before even the world was made, God chose us to be holy and blameless. Gospel Mark 6:7-13 Jesus sent the twelve apostles out in twos and they drove out many demons and anointed sick people and cured them. “It was the Lord… who said, ‘Go, prophesy to my people.’” 16TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME Response: The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. First Reading Jeremiah 23:1-6 Pastoral care is vital for everyone in this world. Shepherds are always needed. Second Reading Ephesians 2:13-18 A divided world is brought together through the suffering of the Lord. Gospel Mark 6:30-34 Human need prompts and provokes a compassionate response. “He took pity on them because they were like sheep without a shepherd.” Illustration In May 1730 a young priest, exhausted by his exertions preaching in and around the city of Na-ples, was encouraged to take a good rest and to go away for a while with some friends to the quiet and peacefulness of the Amalfi coast. The group set off towards the Bay of Salerno and took a boat along the coast. They put in at Amalfi and there met a friend who suggested they go higher up the moun-tainside to a peaceful place called Scala. There, high up in the hills, they would see the beauty of the world all around them and could enjoy the tranquil-lity of earth, sea and sky. Having arrived in Scala, the little group of priests met local people and soon were joined by shepherds who came down from minding their sheep to get to know these new arri-vals in their quiet corner of the world. The young priest and his companions soon discovered that these local people, so pleasant and so friendly, were also very much neglected in matters of faith and religious practice. So the holiday soon turned into a time of mission and the group set themselves to evangelise these neglected people. This event was the beginning of the new mis-sionary order that would become the Redemptor-ists, and the young priest who had travelled to Scala in search of peace and quiet became the founder of the order and a great teacher and pastor in the Church – Alphonsus Liguori. From this initial experi-ence, Alphonsus grew to develop the particular in-sight and impetus of his little congregation – to seek out those people who are most abandoned. Gospel Teaching Today, in the Gospel, Jesus, too, seeks to take his little group away to a quiet place and rest, only to find when their boat puts in to shore that a crowd of people are already there before them and are waiting for them. The planned holiday must now give way to the needs of this hungry people, who are hungry for more of what Jesus has to offer them. The sight of these people has a profound effect on Jesus. He is deeply moved by what he sees – people who seem lost and directionless, people who seem vulnerable to every wind that blows. Mark, writing this Gospel story, says the people were like sheep without a shepherd. Shepherds, as we know, pro-vide leadership and good guidance for sheep, find-ing new pastures for them and keeping guard over them in the watches of the night, so that predators may not attack and kill them. So many people in the world, individually and in groups, are like sheep without a shepherd, easy prey for those who would take advantage of them and destroy them. Life should not be like this. Every-one deserves to be loved and cared for, but the world is full of sorrow. That is why the holiday had to wait. Jesus saw needy people and responded right away. Application The world needs shepherds. Everyone needs a shepherd. Without the care and love and protec-tion of a shepherd we will all be lost. We will be vulnerable to those who wish to exploit us for their own selfish and cruel ends. Sometimes peo-ple fall through the cracks in society. No one seems to be responsible, and young people and poor people are left to die by the wayside. But we are all involved. I am my brother’s – and my sis-ter’s – keeper. When we see a need it provokes a response in us, a need to help in some way. Jesus could have turned that boat around and gone off in search of another place for peace and quiet. But to do that is to close your heart to human need. Lemn Sissay is a British poet and broadcaster. His mother came from Ethiopia, but had to leave him in care temporarily and never got him back. He was given to foster parents, but when he was twelve they placed him in a children’s home. Lemn grew up in “care homes” that did not care for him at all. He did not even know his own name until the day he left care. His life has been a long jour-ney to find out who he is, where he came from and where he belongs. He says that he has “no next of skin”. Jesus, the good shepherd, tells us different-ly. We belong to one another and are called to care for one another. We are all “next of skin”.
