2014 Week of Christian Unity: _January 18-25_ The Canadian Council of Churches (CCC) is encouraging all Churches and ecclesia! communities in Canada to promote the 2014 Week of Prayer for Christian Unity. The theme chosen for this year's Week of Prayer is Saint Paul's question from 1 Corinthians 1:13: "Has Christ been divided?" It is an invitation to Christians in Canada, and around the world, to reflect prayerfully on this question in light of their experience. In his address of March 20, 2013, to the ecumenical and interfaith representatives who had been present for the inauguration of his Petrine Ministry, Pope Francis said it was his "firm intention to pursue the path of ecumenical dialogue". He invited all to be "closely united to the prayer of our Saviour at the Last Supper, to his appeal: ut unum sint", and in bearing witness to Christian faith "freely, joyfully and courageously." This, the Holy Father said, "will be the best service we can offer to the cause of Christian unity, a service of hope for a world still torn by divisions, conflicts and rivalries." For 100 years, the Week of Prayer has been a wonderful opportunity for Christians to gather together in prayer and to join witness to action. It is a practice rooted in the Franciscan tradition of Graymoor. Documents, such as Ut Unum Sint, have stressed the importance of prayer for the unity of the Church. Razdeljenost čisto gotovo nasprotuje Kristusovi volji, je svetu v pohujšanje in v škodo najsvetejši stvari, namreč oznanjevanju evangelija vsemu stvarstvu« (E 1). Fr. Drago Gačnik, župnik - Baptism of the Lord Response: The Lord will bless his people with peace. First Reading Isaiah 42:1-4. 6-7 The Suffering Servant, filled with the Holy Spirit, is also the one who will open the eyes of those who are blind, free prisoners and bring light to those in darkness. Second Reading Acts 10:34-38 It is because God has no favourites that Jesus was able to help and heal everyone who came to him. Gospel_Matthew 3:13-17 John reluctantly baptised Jesus, whom God then acknowledged as "my Son, the Beloved". "This is my Son, the Beloved; my favour rests on him." Illustration Jesus was about twelve years old when he went to Jerusalem with Mary and Joseph to celebrate a Jewish festival. Like any teenager, he was increasingly reluctant to spend time with the adults and wanted to "do his own thing". So Luke gives us the story of the finding in the Temple. We can sympathise with Mary and Joseph once they realised Jesus was missing, and we can recognise the anxiety with which they returned to Jerusalem and spent the next three days looking for him. Jesus, when they found him with the teachers in the Temple, would have won no prizes for tact and gentleness. His response - "Did you not know that I must be busy with my Father's affairs?" - must have been incredibly hurtful. He could see for himself just how worried Mary and Joseph had been on his behalf, but we hear no word of apology for his bluntness. Perhaps, on the way back home to Nazareth, Jesus did say sorry and made amends for the thoughtlessness of a young adolescent. We do not hear anything of his life for the next few years. Presumably Joseph trained him as a carpenter because, as an adult, Jesus was known as a carpenter and as the son of a carpenter. Yet were there moments when he looked back to that time in the Temple and the moment when he began to realise that his vocation was not to be in a workshop working with wood, but to be out and about, working with people and their souls? Gospel Teaching Today's Gospel takes place years later, when Jesus arrived at the river Jordan where his cousin John practised a baptism of repentance and foretold the coming of the Messiah. How well did Jesus and John know each other? They probably knew the stories surrounding each other's birth, but just as every human life is an unfolding of a mystery known only to God in its totality, so also with the two cousins. Jesus asks John for baptism and it seems that John experiences a frightening moment of revelation: until now he has been speaking of the coming Messiah, the strap of whose sandal he is unworthy to unfasten. Suddenly, it seems that Jesus might be that very Messiah. Yet there is a measure of uncertainty: the imprisoned Baptist will later send messengers to Jesus, asking, "Are you the one who is to come or are we to wait for another?" Jesus' baptism is an awakening for John and also for Jesus, for whom this is the start of his public ministry. Jesus' awareness of his vocation has grown from when the time when, as a boy, he was found with the teachers in the Temple. Now God acknowledges Jesus, the man, as the beloved Son. The Holy Spirit comes down on him, commissioning him to go out and spread the good news of the kingdom of God. Application Discerning one's vocation in life does not normally happen in one blinding flash of enlightenment. It is something that unfolds gradually, during the many events and encounters of ordinary daily life. A niggling idea that there is a special calling often needs years of careful thought before it becomes clear. Even then, it is dynamic and developing. What a young person may believe is his or her path may, at the end of life, have turned out to be very different as that vocation matured. Jesus, as a boy, knew that he had a special relationship with God, a relationship confirmed and directed at his baptism. Yet, in the Temple in Jerusalem and on the banks of the Jordan, it was not automatically clear that his proclamation of the kingdom of God would lead to Calvary. It was only through the experience of coming into conflict with the authorities and refusing to compromise his message that Jesus came to realise the probable outcome of his journey through life. Our own vocation mirrors that of Jesus: moments of revelation and understanding mixed with confusion, uncertainty and, occasionally, opposition as we live out God's unique call. The Holy Spirit filled Jesus, commissioning and accompanying him throughout his public ministry. The same Spirit, deep within our heart, leads and guides us, helping us also to be faithful witnesses and messengers of God's kingdom of love. We do not know where obedience to God's call will take us. Our understanding of our own vocation will change and develop in living it out on our unique path. Where Jesus leads, we follow.
