Slovenska župnija sv. Gregorija Velikega | St. Gregory the Great Slovenian Church 09/50 Številka - Number / Leto - Year 02. 03. 2014 8. NEDELJA MED LETOM 8th SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME Fr. Thank you, and remember to mark Next year's Bazaar on your calendars. 8th Sunday in Ordinary Time Response: For God alone my soul waits in silence. First Reading Isaiah 49:14-15 There are times in our lives when we can feel lost, abandoned, unloved. Into this place of great sadness the Lord promises his people that he loves us with a deep, unfailing maternal love. Second Reading 1 Corinthians 4:1-5 Paul reminds the Corinthians not to use their time and energy fretting about who is worthy or not. Rather, trusting all things to our heavenly Father, we are called simply to be faithful stewards of the mysteries Christ gives us. Gospel Matthew 6:24-34 Recognising the worries of everyday life, Jesus calls all who hear him to reshape their lives in service to a new master. As servants of the Father we can live in freedom of heart, trusting all things to God. "Set your heart on his kingdom first... and all these other things will be given you as well." Illustration A young person's decision to move towards a life as an ordained priest, or as a religious, is often a difficult thing for that person to explain. Family members and friends can be mystified, and even saddened or angered by what seems such an odd idea. "Why shut yourself away from everyone?" one woman entering a Carmelite monastery was asked. "It's just a waste of a life!" the man becoming a Benedictine was told. "What about a family life?" the seminarian was questioned. It is not always easy to answer such questions, especially today. There are a great many options not only for more luxurious lifestyles, but also for good and satisfying ways of living that don't seem to require such radical sacrifice. Such "life choices" as celibacy, poverty and obedience can be challenging to others. One young man, entering the Dominicans, was explaining the life to friends - a life of no personal possessions, of community structures and routine, and of having to obey the prior. Hearing this, a friend interjected: "You're told when to eat, when to pray, where to go, you can't just go out and spend money when you want - what about your freedom?" "The thing is," the young man answered, "all that sort of leaves you free for other things." "What other things?" was the retort. "I don't know - whatever God wants of me," the young man finally responded. Gospel Teaching In today's Gospel we see how Jesus is aware of the many ways in which we all go around believing ourselves free, and in charge of life, when, in fact, we are very often trapped. We can think that earning more money will free us - that our buying power and future choices will be increased. Our lives in today's world can quickly be defined by our making of money, fulfilling material ambitions, providing for ourselves and our families not only what is needed, but as much as possible. We believe that this is where happiness lies. And, whilst ambition and earning a good living may not, in themselves, be bad things for us, they can become our "masters". What Jesus warns is that, when this happens - when all our energies and time are given over to these masters - we are drawn away from serving God. The great tragedy, if we allow ourselves to be drawn away from serving God, is that in fact living as a "slave of God", or as "Christ's servants", is not about having our freedom restricted, or about being "enslaved" at all. To commit ourselves to living under God's mastery is actually to live our lives in a radical trust, and so come to know a greater happiness and freedom. This strange-sounding paradox works because the Lord is not only "master", but is, even more, the loving parent who provides for his children, and who never forgets his people. The call that Jesus makes to us today - not to worry - is a call, above all else, to a relationship of trusting love in his Father and ours. God desires that we should be free from anxieties, so that we can be free for joy, love, service - and rest! Application We all have things we have to do each day, to earn a living, to care for others in our families; and, in truth, we all, at some time or another, have properly worrying things in our lives. God, who knows "the secret intentions of [our] hearts", knows the realities of our lives. And, despite what some may think, even the lives of priests and religious are not free from such ordinary, practical responsibilities. But, as we live in this world, which is so often dominated by material ambition and anxiety, Jesus reaches out to us with a promise of freedom, peace, and the time, space and energy to get to know him better, and to love and care for one another more. This is a call we can respond to, even in the real busyness and pressures of our daily lives. We can each ask, at the start of our day: Is there one thing I feel I must do today, which actually I could let go, without it mattering? Perhaps if we placed that time and energy we would have used, trustingly and peacefully, in the Father's love, we might each find that we became a little freer for whatever it is God is wanting us to do. And this will make us freer, happier and better stewards of Christ's mysteries. Today, I am inviting you to help for 1-1/2 to 2 hours a month in the cleaning of the church. Groups of four would be scheduled on a specific day. For example: One person to take care of the altar, one person the benches, one person the back areas and one person to vacuum. No experience is necessary.
