Človeška modrost in božja moč
Za bogoslužje pete nedelje med letom lahko rečemo, da je nekakšen preizkus naše vernosti. Vera je namreč ljubezenski odnos do Boga, iz katerega izvira ljubeč odnos do sočloveka. Zato je merilo naše vernosti prav odnos do sočloveka. Večkrat slišimo govorice, da je razkorak med vero o kateri govorimo in med vero, ki jo živimo. Prav gotovo ta očitek ni vedno brez osnove. Končno ni tako važno, kaj pravijo drugi, ampak kaj moramo o svoji veri reči sami.
V evangeliju nas Jezus s svojimi znanimi besedami opozarja na odgovorno nalogo, ki jo imamo s svojo vernostjo. «Vi ste sol zemlje,« pravi, »če se pa sol spridi, s čim se bo solila?» Biti resnično veren pomeni biti vzdrževalec vsega dobrega na tem svetu. Če takih vzdrževalcev ne bo, bo svet propadel. V naših časih še posebej čutimo resničnost in težo teh Jezusovih besed. »Ni za nič drugega več, kakor da se vrže proč,« preteče opozarjajo. In še primerja vlogo nas vernih z lučjo, ki se ne «postavlja pod mernik, marveč na svetilnik in sveti vsem«.
Kot je kakšni vidni osebnosti včasih kar nerodno, ker jo v javnosti vsi prepoznavajo in skoraj ne more imeti svojega zasebnega življenja, tako nekako je tudi s kristjanom. Vsi, ki ga poznajo, ga opazujejo in vsaj nehote ocenjujejo: »Kristjan je. Kakšen je?« Zares, veren biti ni lahko! To je odgovorna naloga. Smo, kot pravi Jezus, »mesto na gori«, ki je daleč naokoli vidno in je ali lepo zgrajeno ali pa je bolj razvalina. Obenem pa to ni samo breme in odgovornost, ampak je tudi užitek, je tudi nekaj zelo lepega, biti vodnik drugim, pokazovalec prave smeri k Dobremu, ki človeka zdaj in na veke osrečuje. Kaj hočemo še več in lepše! »Tako naj sveti vaša luč pred ljudmi,« zaključuje Jezus, »da bodo videli vaša dobra dela in slavili vašega Očeta, ki je v nebesih.«
Gospod Jezus, naj bomo vsaj lučke sredi sodobne teme. Naj bomo topla ognjišča človeškega razumevanja in tako kažipoti k tebi - Ljubezni.

Minutes of the Občni zbor - February 24th, 2013
Members Present: Father Drago Gačnik, Milan Ferletič, Joziča Vegelj, Terezija Sarjaš, Frank Novak, Jenny Antolin, Jerry Ponikvar, Karl Ferko, Pamela Gosgnach
66 parishioners were in attendance.
1.Welcome:	The meeting opened at 3:00pm. Milan welcomed all parishioners and reminded everyone of the contribution of former priests and parishioners to the success of the parish. A moment of silence was observed in their honour. Father Drago said the opening prayer.
2.	Acceptance of proposed agenda. Matilda Zupančič, proposed and Heidy Novak seconded the acceptance. All in favour
3.	Minutes of Občni Zbor, Feb 26th, 2012. Pamela Gosgnach read a summary of the minutes. Jacob Truden proposed and Karl Ferko seconded the acceptance of the minutes. All in favour.
4.	Committee reports:
a.	Liturgični odsek: Frank outlined the composition of the group, described their planning for major liturgical celebrations and provided parish statistics of 16 Christenings, 18 funerals, 6 First Holy Communion recipients, 6 Confirmation candidates and 1 wedding.
b.	Slomškovo Oltarno Društvo: 55 members Jožica provided a brief history of the society and mentioned that there are still three of the original members in the group, Terezija Ierič, Teresa Prsa and Cecilia Sobocan. She mentioned the average age of the group as being 78 years, with one member celebrating 100 years in 2013. She noted that only 16 of the members are still able to assist with regular cleaning of the church. 5 non-members are always ready to assist. She explained that the group has a bond of friendship and all members are ready to help in any way they can. Jozica closed with words of encouragement to the younger parishioners in the hope that they would continue the work of the society.
c.	Katoliška Ženska Zveza: 103 members. Sidonia reported on all areas of parish involvement, including the annual bazaar, Our Lady of God Counsel Mass, support for First Communion and Confirmation candidates, pilgrimages to Marmora and Baraga, sponsorship of Guadeloupe, Mass of Remembrance, visiting sick and elderly members. She noted that in 2012 members provided funeral honour guards for Tončka Demšar, Stephanie Rihar, Irma Hull, Elizabeth Tanko and Ethel Simončič. Sidonia also provided a list of donations including $7,743.00 to St. Gregory's.
d.	Catholic Girl's Club: 16 members. Jessica Novak and -Leah Skerl provided an encouraging report about the increase in membership and the activities enjoyed by the group. They stated that from its foundation in November 2009 the group has grown from the three founding members to a group of sixteen girls between the ages of ten and sixteen. Their main focus is to assist children locally, nationally and internationally. In 2012, $1,000 raised from the spaghetti dinner was matched by a $1,000 private donation and presented to War Child. The girls stressed that while they work hard, they also like to have fun and keep that in mind when planning activities. The report concluded with thanks to Father Drago, parents and parishioners
for all the support they receive. Jessica and Leah encouraged all present to speak to children/ grandchildren about joining the group.
e.	Kulturno društvo
- Slovenska Šola: 55 students registered. Sandy outlined the goals of the school staffed by Darlene Kobe, Lori Mramor and Sandy Allen. She also noted the involvement of Father Drago celebrating Mass with the students and preparing them for performances at Miklavž and Materinski Dan. During the last two years a parent teacher group has been formed to assist the teachers with several aspects of school planning. Sandy was pleased to announce the upcoming trip to Slovenia for the summer of 2013. Finally, she thanked the parents of students for bringing their children to the Saturday classes and for instilling into the children a love for their Slovenian heritage.
-Pevski Zbori: Jenny spoke about the ongoing commitment of St. Gregory's choir groups Majolka, mixed choir, men's choir and English Choir. They enhance many cultural celebrations and add to the beauty of the Mass.
- Plesni skupini: Soča -16 children registered. Jenny noted that the children practiced on Saturday afternoons, following Slovenian School until last April. Health issues of the instructor caused the practice sessions to be postponed. The children did not give any dance performances in 2012 but sang at the Slovenian Day celebrations at Triglav in London.
-Day Camp: 52 participants. Heidy reported that Day camp 2012 was adversely affected by poor weather and the re-construction taking place in both halls. Despite these obstacles, the children enjoyed many days of fun and special events. The annual barbecue and soccer games had to be cancelled due to the weather. Heidy thanked Amalia for her contribution to hot dog days and also thanked the various societies who together with Slovenian Credit Union provided financial support. She noted that the number of participants indicates a strong Slovenian community. Plans are being made to hold the 13 th Annual Day Camp this summer.
f.	Društvo Sv. Jožefa: 146 paid members. Jerry Ponikvar reported that the society met monthly with Active Management to discuss matters relating to the villa. An increase was noted in the number of Slovenian residents. He reported on the society's social events, weekly bingo and excursion to Oktoberfest. He outlined participation in the Slovenski Dan celebrations, and in the bocce league. Contributions from the society were made to visiting priests from Slovenia, St. Gregory's Summer Camp, Slovenian Scholarship Foundation and the Bishop Baraga Foundation. Jerry noted the loss of long standing members, Ivan Obal, Jože Jerič, Janez Hočevar, Ludvik Hull, Štefan Prša, Ethel Simončič, Ivan Simončič and Tony DiTomassi during the year. He thanked the executive and board members for their support and encouraged younger parishioners to become members.
g.	Gospodarsko poročilo: Mirko Zorko outlined in detail the regular monthly, quarterly and annual maintenance completed. He noted repair work done as a result of a wind- storm and many items connected with the renovation project in the upper and lower halls. Major purchases included new cabinets for the lower hall bar, a new freezer for the upper hall bar, a new expansion hot water heater for the upper hall kitchen and new fixtures for the renovated bathrooms. Following the reading of reports, Milan thanked all societies and parishioners for their help and
gave special mention to Amalia, Sonja and Gizela for their work in the rectory on Father's behalf.

Following the presentation of the financial report, Milan asked if there were any questions. No questions were asked. Jerry moved and Frank Mramor seconded a motion to approve the financial statement. All were in favour.

Jerry noted the increased enrollment from 45 - 55 students at Slovenian School as a positive sign for the parish. He also commended the Catholic Girl's Club and Slovenian Summer Camp as ways to promote the Slovenian culture and heritage.
Karl Ferko introduced himself as the Slovenian Scholarship representative and spoke about the upcoming golf tournament in May. Posters were available as a reminder. He encouraged parishioners to support the events, as this was a means of generating funds for the scholarships to be awarded.
6. New Business and Miscellaneous:
Hall Management -Frank spoke about the need to cover expenses and make a profit from both halls. He noted that the search for a new manager had been a focus of the council this year. A consultant was approached to provide input and advice and a contract has been prepared to enable the council to hire a new hall manager. Frank noted that potential income from the rentals would make up for the loss of Sunday collections and prolong the life of the parish. He outlined changes that are occurring in the rental business and the need to attract a wide variety of events, which would suitable for the location.
Nomination of new Parish Council Members. - Milan named three parishioners who agreed to stand as candidates. Tony Horvat, Sonya Podrebarac and Emily Archer Novak. All candidates accepted.
Jožica motioned and Karl seconded a motion to approve the three new council members. All were in favour.
Miscellaneous comments re hall management
Mirko asked how many candidates have applied or been approached for the position of hall manager and named Karl Ferko and Joe Prša as possible applicants. Karl Ferko, who was present at the meeting, declined the opportunity. Mirko also questioned whether the position had been advertised in the Vestnik.
Mr. Zižek asked why we were interviewing someone from out of the area. He supported the consideration of Joe Prša or Karl Ferko as candidates.
Jerry Ponikvar asked if the assembled group could hear a profile of the potential candidate. Frank responded that the individual had expressed interest in the positions of both hall manager and cook. She is young, lives in the area, and is of Slovenian heritage, appropriately qualified and computer literate. He explained that the contract would be initially for one year with a review at the end of that time and with a 28-day termination policy by either party.
Both Sandy Allen and Sonja Podrebarac spoke of the need to change the approach to hall management by hiring a person with the appropriate qualifications and background, who could manage the venue in keeping with updated rental practices.
7.	Pastor's Address:
Father Drago spoke about changes occurring in the parish, the tremendous amount of detail involved with the renovation project from both the financial and construction perspectives, and shared a report, read by Pamela, and prepared by Joe Prša. which highlighted all the details.
8.	Closing Prayer and Meeting Adjournment:
The meeting concluded at 5:20pm with a prayer by Father Drago.

CGC - SPAGHETTI DINNER - REPORT
The Catholic Girl's Club would like to thank everyone that came to our 4th Annual Spaghetti Dinner held on Saturday, January 25, 2014.
Once again it was a great success - the snow fall didn't stop you from attending. Over 200 tickets were sold! The turn out was excellent. As always the mom's of the Catholic Girls Club worked in the kitchen and the CGC members worked the door, served the meals, and cleaned up.
Thank you to the women of the CWL that took the time to make the krofe for that evening - it was a delicious treat! We have to thank our dads as well for helping set up, clean up and for your work in the bar.
Our spaghetti dinner has always been a success as a result of the generous donations that we receive. Some of these donations went to purchasing supplies and other donations were used for raffle and door prizes. The evening was more enjoyable due to the wonderful music provided by ANSAMBEL ŠIBAJ.
The Catholic Girl's Club is always very grateful for all the help we get from Father Drago - he rocks!! All money raised will be donated to Operation Smile.

In most countries, the economy depends on huge trucks, forty tons or more, which collect merchandise at the ports and ferry it inland. They radiate power as they pound along the highways. Sometimes they have trailers behind them, and chimneys that fire their exhaust fumes into the sky. In small nations like Britain and Ireland they have only a few hours' road journey. In countries like the USA and Brazil, delivering cargo may take many weeks.
Their drivers are only human and they have to rest. Big motorways and interstate highways have a lay-by at frequent intervals. There they are in the evenings, those trucks, like giant dinosaurs at rest, nose to nose. Imagine a winter morning, before the sun rises: there has been snow in the night, and a severe frost. The first truck grinds into life: for a moment it seems that the diesel is frozen solid, but then, reluctantly, it coughs and the engine catches. In the cabin, the driver, still rubbing 48 | VESTNIK 2014
sleep from eyes, switches on the heater, and the radio, and the wipers. The whole system responds. The truck is ready to go. Its lights are already shining in the darkness.
The driver of the next truck is having problems. The giant engine won't turn over. So they rig up cables from the battery of the first truck to the second, and the power of the first one fires the second into life. And as the pistons drum away, and the colossal vehicles nose their way out onto the arterial roads, the economy of the country begins to turn over as well, and another day begins.
Gospel Teaching
Jesus says he wants us to be salt and light in our world - spiritual versions of those powerful trucks on which a whole nation depends for the basics. But our basics are not food and consumer goods. What we carry with us is the knowledge of God and the wonder of God's love. Salt that loses its taste, says the Lord, is good for nothing. In other words a Christian, a Catholic, who does not let his or her faith show through in what is said and done, is of little use. A light that is concealed is senseless; it only makes sense when it is visible. Surely we can bring our world face to face with Jesus, by the things we say and by the things we do - and sometimes also by the things we don't do? Not making ourselves objectionable to those
around us, but saying and doing enough for it to be known what we are and what we believe in.
Application
Our first two readings are like searchlights playing on our daily life, backing up what Jesus says to us in the Gospel about salt and light. Isaiah concentrates on kindness: "Share your bread with the hungry, and shelter the homeless poor." If anyone in town is turning out to run the soup kitchen or the food bank, it should be us. If anyone is bringing relief to those who are oppressed as a hospital chaplain or a prison visitor, it should be us. If anyone volunteers to go into the primary school and help the children to read, that volunteer should be me. Then, says Isaiah (and God through Isaiah), "your light will rise in the darkness". You will be like the truck driver with the jump leads, coming to the aid of the other.
Paul talks about passing on our knowledge of the faith. We don't have to be experts to do this. "Not with any show of oratory or philosophy," he says. We are called simply to tell our friends what it means for us that Jesus was crucified for us and rose again, that he has made Mary our mother, that since Pentecost the Holy Spirit is there to help us believe and pray. We are called to share with them what it means to go to Mass; to share with them the comfort and strength of the Eucharist. We are also called to share our hope of heaven, not only for ourselves but for those we love. Not as zealots, but as sane and sensible peo-
ple who by the grace of God are Catholics, and have been enabled to make sense of life. We do it in answer to questions, because if our lamp is on the lampstand, the neighbours will ask. And when they do, we are to be ready.

CWL - BAZAAR_
A reminder that our Annual CWL Bazaar will be held on Sunday, February 23, 2014. Bazaar Lunch tickets and reservations can be made before and after all masses or by contacting Theresa Sarjas at: 905-560-1218. Advance Tickets must be paid for at time of reservations in order to reserve your seat at a reduced rate of $12 each for adults. Tickets purchased at the door will cost $15/ adult. Lunch for Children 4-10 years is $5, and
children under 3 are free. Bazaar Donations: New items for our raffle, penny sale tables and children's center are always graciously accepted. If you have anything that you are able to help out with, items can be dropped off at 7pm weeknight masses in the alter serving area. We will pick them up and organize from there. cwl meeting_
For safety reasons, our CWL Meeting was cancelled due to inclement weather last week. We have re-scheduled our meeting to this coming Monday, February 10th at 7:30pm (after 7pm mass). This is the final meeting before our annual bazaar so we urge all our members to please attend this meeting to make certain we cover all organizational details; this will help us ensure another successful Bazaar.
OBČNI ZBOR ŽUPNIJE SV. GREGORIJA VELIKEGA_
Naslednjo nedeljo, t.j 16. februarja 2014 ob treh popoldne, imamo naš letni občni zbor. Namen tega zbora je, da bi skupaj pregledali delovanje naše župnije. Najprej pogledamo na preteklo leto, kaj se je zgodilo - poročila posameznih društev in skupin in tudi finančno poročilo, potem pa skušamo pogledati tudi kaj nas časa do naslednjega leta. Posebej ko gre za večje odločitve jih sprejemamo skupaj, saj župnija je stvar nas vseh. Vsak po svojih močeh gradi to župnijsko skupnost.
Kot je navada, vsako leto tudi izbiramo nove člane za Župnijski pastoralni svet. Nekaterim
poteče triletni mandat zato potrebujemo nove člane. Posebej smo veseli mlajših saj nam lahko ti povedo kaj si mlajša generacija želi, da se bolj dejavno vključili v župnijsko življenje. Biti član župnijskega sveta je v prvi vrsti čast, da je lahko nekdo v ožji skupini, ki skupaj z župnikom načrtuje in izpelje prireditve in dogodke in skrbi za redno delovanje. Gotovo je tudi odgovornost biti član župnijskega sveta.
Naša župnija je že zelo zgodaj imela župnijski pastoralni svet, ki je vedno pomagal pri vodenju župnije. Zato smo veseli vseh, ki ste se letos odločili, da postanete člani sveta. Letošnje leto je namreč še posebej pomembno, saj župnija obhaja 50. letnico obstoja. To je za skupnost v Kanadi kar lepo obdobje. Veliko se je zgodilo v tem času. Zgradili so se prostori, dvorana, župnišče in cerkev, pa tudi veliko parkirišče, ki je v današnjih časih še kako pomembno. Imeti svoje prostore pomeni zelo veliko, saj lahko načrtujemo svoje dejavnosti. Nekateri se ne zavedajo kaj pomeni, da ima skupnost nekaj svojega, kjer se lahko razvijajo dejavnosti. Upam, da bomo lahko še naprej ohranili vse to kar imamo, vendar samo, če bodo tudi mlajši čutili, da je to njihov kraj, župnija, prostor, kjer se srečujejo s prijatelji, kjer se mladi učijo in spoznavajo slovensko kulturno dediščino, jezik in navade.
V nedeljo ste zato vsi vabljeni, da se udeležite tega srečanja, ki bo ob 3:00 popoldne. V tej številki Vestnika imate tudi zapisnik lanskoletnega Občnega zbora in si lahko preberete o čem smo govorili in razpravljali. Župnik
STEFAN KRAMPAC
V torek, 11. februarja, Štefan Krampač, ki je bil z nami od decembra, odhaja nazaj v Slovenijo. Iskrena hvala za njegovo pomoč v tem času. Naj ga božji blagoslov spremlja na njegovi nadaljni poti.
60. LETNICA POROKE
V nedeljo, 2. februarja sta FRANK in ANA FERENČAK obhajala 60 letnico poroke. Med slovensko sveto mašo, pri kateri je pel župnijski zbor, sta se Bugu, skupaj s svojimi najbližjimi, zahvalila za vse milosti, g. Štefan Krampač pa jima je podelil še blagoslov, da bi ju Bog še naprej ohranjal v povezanosti in zdravju.
