42 T. Poličnik-Čermelj, T. Lekić, P. Gorkič: Library Catalogues and Their Usage , 41–70 Library, 58 (2014) 4 Abstract Stocktaking is a process carried out by libraries in order to assess whether the state of their collections matches the catalogues. This paper presents the catalogues relevant for carrying out the manual stocktaking which took place at the National and University Library in the years 2010–2014. Only those catalogues are outlined which assist in the successful completion of stocktaking in closed stacks, where the materials are arranged by running number ( numerus currens ). The catalogues of special collections are not included since special collections employ different systems of collection management and shelf arrangement. The paper also presents bibliographic records that were created in the early days of the COBISS system and those in- corporated by subsequent retrospective conversion, as they tend to slow down the progress of stocktaking analysis. As the COBISS system has evolved over time, the understanding of old bib- liographic records is crucial to high-quality implementation of stocktaking and also in providing information regarding the materials that have not yet been processed according to the latest bibliographic standards. An overview of the most important catalogues and the development of bibliographic records through time can be of great use to all larger libraries that have not yet recorded all the materials in the COBISS system, and it will be of special use for further imple- mentation of stocktaking at the National and University Library.
