Knjižnica 49(2005)4, 51-76 52 Professional article UDC 027.7(497.4):028.8 Abstract In 1989, the American Library Association published the well-known Final Report of the Presidential Committee on Information Literacy. Since then, the information-de- veloped world has seen numerous activities for upgrading information literacy at all levels of education, in the economy and in everyday life. Efficient use of knowledge in society is strongly emphasized and, linked to that, the importance of education and training of information users, as well as the upgrading of information literacy, espe- cially in the context of higher education. Information literacy is increasingly recognized as a basic skill in the process of learning and adapting to the changing living and work- ing environment of today’s information society. Students face dilemmas in the selec- tion of information resources and challenges for their efficient and responsible use on a daily basis. Academic libraries respond to this challenge by offering different infor- mation literacy programmes. This paper presents the findings of a pilot survey on education and training of users of library information services, conducted in Septem- ber 2004, and some forms of information literacy programmes carried out by the aca- demic libraries at the Slovenian Universities. It also proposes some approaches to- wards the development of information literacy in all segments of Slovenian society. Key words: academic libraries, universities, information literacy, user education, sur- veys 1 Uvod Od leta 1989, ko je Ameriško bibliotekarsko združenje izdalo končno poročilo Predsedniškega komiteja o informacijski pismenosti (American, 1989), je le-ta deležna velike pozornosti po vsem svetu. Posebno dejavne pri njenem pospe- ševanju so ZDA, Avstralija, Nova Zelandija, Kanada, Velika Britanija, Nizozem- ska in skandinavske države. V zadnjih letih se je v povezavi s Svetovnim vrhom o informacijski družbi ta pozornost izredno povečala. Omenimo samo Prvo mednarodno konferenco strokovnjakov o informacijski pismenosti v Pragi leta 2003, aktivnosti v okviru IFLE in UNESCA v letu 2004, priprave na ustanovitev Mednarodnega združenja o informacijski pismenosti in ustanovitev Evropske mreže za informacijsko pismenost – EnIL kot tudi veliko drugih nacionalnih in mednarodnih pobud za pospeševanje informacijske pismenosti predvsem v vi- sokošolskem izobraževalnem sistemu.
