Omejitve raziskave: Zaradi posebnosti slovenskega knjižničnega sistema, ki povezuje vzajemni katalog in informacijski sistem o raziskovalni dejavnosti (SICRIS), so rezul- tati uporabni le v slovenskem kontekstu. For librar- ians in research libraries, i. e. special and academic libraries, advising researchers re- quires in-depth knowledge of bibliometrics. In Slovenia, the librarians-bibliographers contribute bibliographic data into libraries’ union catalogue COBIB.SI that is intercon- nected with Slovenian Current Research Information System (SICRIS), Thus, they have a direct insight into researchers’ or institutions’ bibliographies. The paper analyses the expertise acquired by librarians-bibliographers during this process and its influence on the relationship between the librarians and researchers. In the second part of the study, the question of the amount of time needed to create an individual bibliographic record is discussed. Methodology/approach: The results of the research are a combination of an online questionnaire for research librarians about their work (n = 113) and the notes of 10 librarians-bibliographers about the time needed to categorise a bibliographic record (n = 401 record) into the COBISS.SI system. Results: For most librarians-bibliographers, producing bibliographies is not primary work obligation. Acquiring information and knowledge for a quality job performance is diverse. The nature of the work provides them a unique insight into the research fields of the institute and gives them opportunities to develop personal contacts with researchers. The paper also presents analysis of the average time needed for categoris- ing a bibliographic record according to the type of material.
