Knjižnica 55(2011)2-3, 129–146 130 Short scientific article UDC 027.7:004.738.5:655.41 Abstract Purpose : To research the situation in the field of electronic books (e-books) offered by the libraries of the University of Ljubljana, and the problems they are facing up to the collection management of these materials. Methodology/approach: An analysis based on data accessible through the web sites of some libraries and the DiKUL portal (Digital Library of the University of Ljubljana), completed by the data provided by some libraries, is presented. Results: The results and above all the findings about dilemmas the librarians at the University of Ljubljana are dealing with confirm similar problems as stated in the foreign professional literature. There are different kinds of business models, problems with the usage statistics, bibliographic record’s quality and access to library materials. Research limitation: A disrupted organizational structure of the University of Ljubljana library network and consequently a disunited approach to the acquisition and mana- gement of e-books as well as a large number of administrators aggravate the gathering of research data and represent obstacles to a more comprehensive collection planning and development. Originality/practical implications: The findings enable a better overview of e-books and initialize a more unified system and activities to provide better access to e-books. Key words: electronic books, business models, bibliographic records, usage statistic, MARC, COMARC, University of Ljubljana, Slovenia, NetLibrary, Safari Books Online, SpringerLink 1 Uvod Elektronske knjige (v nadaljevanju e-knjige) že dolgo niso več neznanka za uporabnike knjižnic Univerze v Ljubljani (v nadaljevanju UL). Kljub temu pa lahko še vedno ugotavljamo, da v pojmovanju delovanja e-knjige nenehno obstajajo problemi glede njihove obravnave tako v domači kakor tudi tuji knjižničarski stroki. Osnovni problemi, s katerimi se srečujemo knjižničarji pri obravnavi e-knjig, izhajajo iz pojmovanja in dojemanja te vrste gradiva kot njene tiskane verzije. Ker pa je njena elektronska različica že po svojem nastanku bolj dinamična, se te težave prenašajo tudi v njeno nadaljnjo pot znotraj knjižničarskega sveta. Tudi založniška srenja se v okviru e-knjig srečuje s težavami, ki jih poskuša rešiti z raznimi orodji in z njimi povezanimi tehnologijami. Kot ugotavlja Kovač (2008, str. 158), pa bistvenega problema – poslovnega modela, še vedno ni dokončno rešila.
